Paul McCartney did mention it! I came across it, and...even George Harrison speaks of: Indo Rock(er) ... Andy Tielman! They played at the same places in germany....so that is quite obvious; All in Wiki....The Tielman Brothers were quite UNIQUE in those times/days in Europe; they broke many music barriers and though the Dutch HOW to ROCK!

the tielman brothers as rock n roll band was started in Holland, in 1957. in 1945, they were "only" family band, until ponthon learned to play contrabass, and andy learned to play guitar a la les paul. ELVIS started wayy before them. andy HIMSELF said, in his DVD live "it's my life", that he was influenced by elvis..btw, i made a documentary on andy called the tielman.

ANDY IS DUTCH, (even though he was born in Makassar with parents from Kupang and Semarang. just like eddie and alex van halen (they are purely dutch but their mother was born in semarang, thus, they belong to indisch culture).

About those references you asked for: a lot of sites claim that Paul McCartney said in an interview later on that he was very impressed by the Tielman Brothers that day in Hamburg, and that they influenced the Beatles' stage performance.

But I can't find that interview, so you've got a point as you say those references are not valid. This doesn't mean the story isn't true, but you're right this is no real proof at all.

It seems to me you really know a lot about the Tielmans!

Andy Tielman explained in an interview how he got inspired after watching american movies in which rock bands and heroes like Bil Haley perform. He explains that the krontjong music in indonesia and early rock have many similarities. Thus rock was easily adapted by the Tielman brothers and given the krontjong background gave them their own style

The fact is :

- Indorock was found in The Netherlands by the Eurasian (Indonesian-Dutch) teenagers on early of the 50's.

- Indorock means rock n roll combined with syncopated rhytm of gamelan (traditional music of Indonesia) and krontjong music.

- Thielman Brothers are the pioneers of Indorock group and Andy Thielman is the uncrowned king of this musical style (he also do a freaky guitar trick @ stage before your guitar heroes do).

The band was quite famous in Europe, long before The Beatles and Elvis. Their music was called Indorock, a fusion of Indonesian and Western music.They already famous at 50's,...1957. Tielman Brothers started performing in 1945!...But,because some "Rock Stars" thought they're from a colony,so it's ok to copy their music and style without permitting to them .I think history of rock must think and fix it, because we can see beatles and elvis style from this band.

@denjaka nope. elvis was starting in middle 1950s and in fact the tielman brothers was influenced by elvis. look at how andy sings, very elvis. and no, the tielman brothers started performin in 1957 and this is the very first song that started rock n roll in holland and europe. in 1945, the band name was Timor Rhythm Brothers and they did not play rock n roll. at that time, hawaiian music was happening.

@denjaka i still believe first rock n roll is played by black americans in 1930's, there's a blues song that use the rock n roll rhyme (i forget his name and the song title, sorry), but he sing it with one man one guitar.

But as band format with electric guitar and play it energetic, yeah maybe tielman brothers is the first because americans claim it's their ppl too but the song that they claim is from 1951. it's still debatable tough and copying style is not forbidden in music.
