Hi thanks for this. I had this problem but sorted it this morning following your tip. However I was wary of taking the battery out so tried clearing the blockage with an air hose and running it under the battery. It worked. followed this up by pouring about a gallon of water just to make sure it was running clear. I had tried with a long welding rod but no joy, the air pressure clearded it. However would not have tried it had i not seen your video. so thanks best wishes from Glasgow.
Another note on the coat hanger method from previous post: You should CLEAN both gutters under the hood hinges with a strong blast of water. Then blast out the bottom of the battery tray too (from each side taking care not to wet key components). If the drain hole plugs again, repeat coat hanger trick (there is no TUBE below the drain-hole, just a nipple, so the bend in the coat hanger can ream out whatever stuff plugs it up). This has worked several times for me on my A6 AllRoad.
This vid is great. Thanks so much. A note: Sometimes you DON'T need to remove the battey and battery tray (which is a pain). To avoid this, follow these steps: 1) take a coat hanger, undo it so it's a straight wire, bend a 3/4" right angle into one end, 2) open hood, remove battery compartment cover, 3) fish coat hanger bend end UNDER battery from passenger side below rear-most edge of battery about 8 inches, 4) slosh coat hander in-out. 90% of time you will soon hear water draining out of car!
This is awesome - i was just about to go to the dealer to get my drains cleaned up. In case you didn`t know, just in front of the pasanger seat you have the transmission control module. It can easily be flooded because of this problem. My TCM got wasted and The dealer was asking $1500 just for the module. I found it on ebay for $150 + shipping. I did the job myself.
@alexleon809 - There isn't actually a plug in there. Instead there's a hole that gets plugged with leaves and other garbage. Once you take that stuff out, leave the hole open.

@1empyre - Glad the video helped. If the leak is in the back seat, you may have an issue with your sunroof. Start with my fix first and see if it solves the problem.
Dude this is awesome. We just had crazy flooding rain here in Arkansas and I have the same problem (the leak is in the rear passenger seat) in my 1999 A6 Quattro avant. I will do this tomorrow. I was freaking out that my car sucks but you have shown that it's a simple fix (hopefully). Thanks bro
Tnx man, i had the same problem with mine too (Audi 1998 sedan) ..... I'm going to do the fixing myself since i'm living in Finland where the dealers are not afraid of calling big number:)

Volkswagen and Audi owners should be receiving a letter in the mail about a class action lawsuit. Anyone who experienced this problem and paid big to fix it may be eligible for a reimbursement.
Volkswagen Passat 1996-2005 has exactly the same problem, the drain hole under the battery tray becomes blocked with leaves and dirt. Its an easy fix!.
wow wow wow i have the same prob i really am laughing out loud lol thanks so much for this vid im doing this this week end. water came in to my car after took it to the car wash then when we drove off i accel really fast and i had to brake hard next thing you know my girlfriends feet were wet
I am looking at one right now,can you give me a heads up on how your experience has been,i have heard a lot of horror stories on maintenance issues for this car.
the audi is a beautiful car and as you can imagine, it drives better than any other car i've ever owned. however, maintenance is very expensive when needed. if you're looking to buy, i would try to stick with an audi that has less than 80k miles.
It depends on what needs to be done. Some of these Audis do great and need only basic maintenance which you could do yourself (a few hundred dollars of maintenance per year). However, some Audis run into major issues. At that point, you can fork out a few thousand dollars and still run into problems. In other words, it's luck of the draw.
i have the same problem with my 2000 A6 avant..But my problem is in the Rear passenger seat and the front is completely dry. when it rains the rear paggenger gets a lot of water. Can you give me some help please??
Great and useful post - I have just had the same problem with my Audi A6 Avant, and I will tomorrow be following your instructions to (hopefully) clear the problem. You have saved me a lot of playing around under the hood! Thanks.

Did they solve these problems with the 2002 update for the C5 Audi A6?
We have an 04 Audi and should we be concerned with this?

I'm not sure about problems in the rear passenger seat. If you have a sunroof, it's possible that water is getting in through there. Best of luck.
