  • I wonder if the policemans voice was overdubbed later as he asked about getting clearance for "videotape him". Noone was really using videotape at that time. It was film. He would have said "film him" in 1969, not "videotape him".

  • How amazing to find this ...about 1969, can't remember just when, my best friend and I hitchhiked down from Berkeley to Big Sur to camp by the ocean. Dropped a lot of acid on the way. By serendipity we ended up at the most beautiful music festival right by the ocean, with incredible musicians. Were we here??? Probably. Too stoned those days to even know for sure! But the magic has stayed with me for a lifetime (a lifetime of much magic and few drugs, lol). Thank you thank you for posting this!

  • nice

  • Clear it with the Sheriff first.............that's awesome dude.

  • Why has this not been released on DVD?

  • @psychodelicrock12 - simple, because then it will be put on utorrent and downloaded for free and they'll make about 20 bucks for their efforts.

  • Yes, where is my time machine!!!!! I was born in the wrong time!!!!!!!

That's LIlian Roxon (Australian) girl at the end of this clip!!!!

  • Please people, if you weren't there how can you possibly make a comment I wasn't but what fun finding these rare films and yes sometimes singers do not preform up to their own expectations. Just so wrong to not appreciate the time in our musical history like this

  • That's Lillian Roxon the Australian music journalist commenting at the end of this clip-saw a great doco on her last nite "Mother of Rock" about her time in NY and the underground scene of the late 60's /early 70's

  • since we don't have time machines... the closest thing I know of is Bonnaroo :D can't wait for the summer

  • WillieB2004: yes, I was there too and the memory of that song she sang still sends chills down my spine. And that hovering albatross as Neil Young sang "Birds" was most definitely surreal...magic all around, capped by a night camping on Sand Dollar beach...

  • OMG Joan Baez stinks. son of a bitch some one shoot her PLEASE!!!

  • ok, ZeppelinFloyd: I was There that afternoon at Eselen & I sure thank you! I keep looking for myself & my girlfriend Annie W,.RE: BAEZ: let me say this 1 thing: I vividly remember how much a BUMMER Joan Baez's "performance" was. & SO: I must thank you for confirming this memory. Boy WHEN JOANNIE BAEZ decided to fuck up a song, She Sure Could do it. Lordy, she takes this beautiful Dylan song and pukes all over it. -- How/Why?-- "Any Day Now we will be Released: yeah, from HER Desecration.

  • @tomthumbtoo HOW FUCKIN DARE YOU CALL OUT JOAN BAEZ YOU FUCKIN A- HOLE....What songs have you written? And by what authority do you an absurd comment like that......Joanie knew thousands of folk and american tunes back in 69, and her voice was absolutely from GOD, no question....she's well permitted to screw up a lyric or two......thats a dylan tune and pretty hard I think...yer outa line pal

  • @ioriorioriorio One Comment Is --- as you say, "outa line, pal" --- Anyone who assumes that the stupid CELEBRITY of Joan Baez---& Stephen Stills, etc -- Causes their Perfomance at this dumb Big Sur Concert to be somehow Immune from Simple Musical Critics of that day and time. Joan Baez is NOT & Would NEVER Claim some kind of Celebrity: U ARE DREAMING, my friend. Baez was not happy with her performance: the whole afternoon, I assure U, was a MESS & NOTHING WAS REVEALED THAT DAY. I Was There.

  • @tomthumbtoo what a total douchebag comment...go back to your yuppie golf course

  • @ioriorioriorio Golf Course!??! My Days are Spent Writing Songs, Playing Guitar , Singing & Teaching Children Music, my friend. You are Invited Here to Asheville, NC to hear some TRUE Music, Removed from the CELEBRITY, WHORE, FAME MACHINE That Baez was already Sucked Into: "I Shall Be Released" is a Great Dylan song & Baez,'s Huge EGO, she forgets the lyric? -& laughs?!, I guess at how pathetic the whole scene was: I WAS THERE+ IT's HERE ON FILM: She Sucks: U Like Crappy Work? I Don't.

  • @tomthumbtoo You're not going to get too far trying to convince people that Joan Baez sucks. Why not go after John Lennon and Mozart while you're at it?

  • Thank you for posting this series of videos.

    Incredible!

  • i was reading about this in the new CSN book and was just thinking to mysef..."i wonder if it's on youtube...."

  • check out the cop at the beginning! what a square!

  • If only I had a time machine

  • Amen!

  • I was lucky enough to record this when shown on BBC in the early 90's.

It deserves the proper dvd treatment as musically at least i prefer this to the Woodstock film.

  • I have it on an old vhs too. Youtube saved me the searching through the bin of music video tapes I made way back when

  • @foxysquirrel ... I wonder where the footage is that didn't make the film... ...I was there and the very first song was sung acapella by Joan Baez.... ...It echoed back from a canyon behind the audience... ...Breathtaking,...beautiful,...and surreal,...all at once...

...Almost put a Porsche into the ocean...Had a flat on the way up...

  • Big Sur! Spent many a night camped out on the beach as a kid.

    Joan and Bob-whoa!

Sourdough, salami, sharp cheddar cheese, and grapes!!

  • i saw that movie also in 74 in France ( late ) i was seventeen , and i remember a kind of Choc , after Woodstock festival , share by ( for me ) a beginning of hopeness and the feeling that something was already ending . In France the Californian events came with 1 or 2 years later .. But what a nice musicals moments . I am in love with Joni Mitchell since 35 Years ..that you to give us back that celebration. Where can we found that movie ? in Dvd somewhere ? I come sometimes in California.

  • muito muito muiiiito loko ....very nice...!

  • I saw this documentary in 1973 and even have the movie poster, but have never been able to find it on any video incarnation. Bless you for apparently posting it in its entirety here. Yes, what a time capsule. Does Stephen Stills seem like a hypocrite, though, for coming to the verge of blows with a heckler who challenges his materialism while singing about peace and egalitarianism?

  • I was there. Wow. What a memory. Big Sur, the very special Esalen Institute, spent 2 days there photographing and ended up selling a back cover for Kris Kristofferson's album, what a gas..what a time it was....

  • Cops had it goin on in Cali I guess? I cannot recall anyone saying "video tape" insted of filming until the mid 70s.

  • Video tape, much like colour film, is really not as new as people seem to think. Also, I shall Be Released if sped up a bit is quite a good song, not that I don't like old commie Joan but this is to slow for a film opening song.

  • He was so disappointed his boss wouldn't let him do the interview. LOL

  • they better bring this out on DVD.

  • Roger that ten 4
