But you need to compare apples with apples. I agree with you that an elitist mythology has supplanted truth in developing the Armenian identity to some extent. But at least Armenian self-perception is rooted in fact (albeit exaggerated). Soviet "Azeri" nationalism is a 100 times more dangerous, as it is literally a *total* fabrication that lays claim to Persian and Armenian culture and relabels it as "Azeri Turkish." That's the context you have to understand with Armenians.

@outsidelight1 Because you err in describing Iran as "the maddest Islamic" nation. First of all, Persian culture takes supremacy over loyalty to Islam in Iran. Differences in religion aside, Armenians and Iranians were the same religion for centuries, speak a related language, and are as close racially and linguistically as Germans to Danes. This transcends mere religion.

Armenia on the other hand has no ethnic anything since all the non Armenians have been expelled or killed...and that, of course is the point. However, to be fair, they are much more credible than the absolute fabrications invented by so-called "Azerbaijani" "Turks". Azarbaijanis are Iranians who, in addition to speaking Persian, speak a Persian-Turkish hybrid language called "Azeri." They are Iranian ethnically, culturally, historically, and in all other ways. Baku as separate "nation" is a total unacceptable farce.

@Shahnamag Yes. genetically speaking Armenians and Azeris are actually quite close. the Azeri language is spoken due to a process called language replacement (so is the culture) that occurs with the introduction of a new elite. But the same is true of Armenian. Armenians- as we know them today- have their roots in 6th century BC migrations into the region emerging as an identifiable entity a couple of hundred years later. Self perception and myth determines identity far more than facts.

@outsidelight1 You're technically right, but then again, the extent to which you've deconstructed Armenian identity can be done to any ethno-cultural-national group, including the English. The "English" people and the "English" language, on your terms, are simply a self-perception of an random, coincidental mixture of various Celtic, Danish, Anglo, Saxon, Norman, Viking immigrants to the British Isles. And it emerged 1000 years later than the Armenian identity so it is less established.

This is a shame and I have no time for petty regional nationalisms that benefit small minded politicians. Look at Czechoslovakia and the Velvet Divorce. Who benefited? Small time Slovak politicians who are now causing problems with Greece's Euro bailout. And who'd have thought that when it happened?

@Shahnamag The problem is that Armenian nationalism is destructive, petty minded and driven by myth and delusions of grandeur. This is not a good thing. Despite the fact that they have had an independent cultural identity since their adoption of Christianity and a national literature they are still immature. The English are more recent and the "British" more recent again. But our contribution is far more mature and we acknowledge the good as well as the bad in our past.

Soviet Azeris though are a completely different case. The neo-Attaturkist "pan-Turk" identity espoused by the Aliyev regime is a fabrication borrowed from a similarly fake post-Ottoman Turkish identity invented a few decades ago, which has no relationship whatsoever with any actual element of their biology, culture, or history. Azeris are an Iranian people, with an Iranian culture and history. They were cut off from Iran for 2 centuries, hence the lost identity and need to invent a new one.

@Shahnamag Mind you, that only applies to the minority Soviet Azeris. The majority 70% of Azaris live in Iran, are leading Iranian nationalists, and even include the Supreme Leader of Iran, who is an Azeri Iranian. They have no issues with Armenians whatsoever, and in fact support Armenians against this complete farce of an ethnic "reconstruction" that is the post-Soviet "Azerbaijani Turk" nation invented by the Aliyev regime.

@Shahnamag Perception is reality. Azeris see themselves as culturally and linguistically aligned to Turkey. Every nation has its founding myths. Armenia is a good example of a country that is busy trying to invent a history. I do not know about Iran's but I am sure there are many myths there too. Turkey had to recreate itself in the 1920s; it achieved this magnificently and has built a strong dynamic country in the process

@outsidelight1 Glendale Armenians don't represent Republic of Armenia - they represent Glendale Armenians. That being said, relations with Iran is a must for Armenia given it's situation with its neighbours (economic blockade) and the fact that historically relations have been warm between the two nations.

In order to make that influence matter they have to square the circle of Armenia's alliance with the "axis of evil".
