Much respect for these aces of the sky. Hans Ulrich Rudel flew with one leg towards the end of the war! Quite impressive, as many grown men today can't even roll out of bed without crushing the Sega Genesis...
Gunther Rall was widely considered the greatest marksman in the Luftwaffe alongside Marseille.
If you add up the victories of the top scoring German aces of each unit you'd get a pretty accurate record of the enemy's losses. The system only allowed the most experienced fighters to score all the kills while the rest just looked on and provided air cover. This was why when a single pilot was killed in action an entire squadron or even wing could be put out of operation (ie. when Marseille died).
I am not a German but this man "Gunter Rall" comes across as a very honest and decent sort of person and I have NO hesitation of calling him a good person and I am sure he was a hero to many Germans...R.I.P........with deepest RESPECT....it is such a pity that we don' t have the sort of gentleman in our daily lives today that the war produced in the 1930's and 1940's.
@jamiemenuez alot of the German soldiers and pilots didn't even think that way, believe me there were alot that were Nazis but there were also alot that weren't...these men were just fighting for their country ...i have alot of respect for this man, he was the third highest scoring ace of all time, a very talented jagdflieger... really wish i had the chance to meet him before he died in 2009...there are murderers and then there are soldiers, they both involve killing, but there is a difference
@HonestBloke well what do you think he was fighting for to beginn with? World domination? One great Germany? The most germans only fought because they where told to do so and more importantly to protect their country and family.
What Rahl says about the high scores of the German aces pretty much matches the comments on this subject I've read of Erich Hartmann. One thing Hartmann said that Rahl didn't--since the German pilots had to stay on the front line continuously, instead of being rotated back home to be instructors like the American pilots, those who weren't very good eventually got killed off, leaving only the best, who stayed alive to run up their scores. So the survivors were VERY good.
@DandAinTac Germany could not match the American conveyor that just kept producing . They had the luxury of resting their pilots . The Germans could not ,due to lack of everything . Those who survived ,i salute . Against the odds, they stayed alive . Regardless of who side they were on . They went home to there familys, unlike millions who were not so fortunate.......
@barbenH That's exactly right. They may have happened to be on the wrong side, but they were fighting for their country, and they deserve respect for that. The Americans were fortunate to have the resources to overwhelm the enemy. You have to respect these German guys who had to stay on the front lines the entire war.
To be fair, the German Airforce also counted aircraft destroyed on the ground in a pilot's kill total. Also, as the man said, the German pilots flew until dead. Whereas the Western Allies rotated pilots back to train new pilots. Finally, the Soviets had very few trained pilots after the first six months of the war. It took a long time for the Soviets to train pilots in a proper way.
Had Gunther not spent 6 months in hospital in 1944 ( his thumb was shot off after downing 2 P47`s) ,in my opinion ,he would have been in the 300+ club with Hartmann & Barkhorn. Rest in peace .
@barbenH I remember in his autobiography photos, there was one weird picture where Günther Rall and Hub Zemke were at some party, and were trying to solve the riddle of Rall's missing thumb. Zemke apparently remembered that it was some "Shortie" from Rankin's flight! Both were just laughing and having a good time.
@barnbersonol Doesn't explain away Joachim Marsielles' 158 air victories on the Western Front does it? Plus Bubi Hartmann only started flying relatively late in the war on his way to racking up 352 victories. I grant you they were on the Eastern Front, but Russian fliers weren't total klutzes either. In fact the top allied aces WERE Russian.
I had just looked up the stats to see what Mr. Rall had been doing scence I last talked with him not knowing he had passed Oct. 4Th 2009 at the age of 91. I got to meet Mr. Rall out at the Chino Planes Of Fame Air Show in the late 80's. As I stood in line I was trying to think of a good question to ask Mr. Rall & I came up with this. "What did you think when you incountered fighters like the P-47 P-38 & P-51's coming at you in large numbers & did you go head to head with any P-38."
Mr. Rall told me; he was in a dogfight with a P-38 and it was a lucky thing he managed to diable the fighter by shooting up one of the P-38's two engines. He added very intensely!; he didn't get out of the encounter scott-free at all, he bent over to pull-up his pants lag. I just can't remember if it was the right or left but I want to say the right one. As he did this the people around Him & I leaned in to look at his leg; it was quite a shock to everyone to;
see this man's leg scared & devoid of a calf muscle. Then he let his pantlag down and looked at me; said if the pilot of that P-38 hadn't done that he wouldn't had shot out his engine. Because he & his 109 was very banged up he just wanted to getaway to fight an other day but he just got overwhelmingly mad. He added it took him a long time to recover from that air battle & he was lucky to land his bf-109 and had to carried from the cockpit to the aidstation.
As he has slipped the surly bonds of earth, and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings and soared high in the sunlit silence. He chased the shouting wind along, and flung his eager 109 through footless halls of air. Up, up, he topped the wind swept heights with easy grace where never even eagles flew. with a silent, lifting mind he flew into the high untrespassed sanctity of space... ...He was then allowed to put out his hand, and he touched the face of God.
You are right about the radar ,tactics, and Goering, but you left out the main reason that Germany lost the BOB.
After the accidental bombing of The London suburb, Bomber Command bombed Berlin 3 nites in a row, and goaded Hitler into bombing London and leaving the airfields alone.
Statistics show that attrition was taking its toll and the British fighter forces were on the verge of collapse, the only thing that saved them was the relief from the relentless daily attacks.
"In my experience, the Royal Air Force pilot was most aggressive and capable fighter pilot during the Second World War. This is nothing against the Americans, because they came in late and in such large numbers that we don't have an accurate comparison. As for Malta. Beurling was a CANADIAN! So why speak so highly of the english cunts when they do not deserve to be praised especially by such a great and talented man.
listen twat, poles czechs canadians aussies etc all fought for gb in the war but the MAJORITY were british. In addition they ALL flew british built planes whoever you are wherever you are from take the anti english/british chip off your shoulder. "English Cunts"
@ss90ss444 I don't know where you are from, but you need to check your facts. While there were indeed many other nationalities, including Americans, flying in the RAF during the Battle of Britain, the vast majority were British and they performed with outstanding honour. Quite frankly, it does not reflect well on you to use such blatently anti British language to try and make a point, especially when it's obvious you have no clue what you are talking about.
I had the chance to see Gunter Rall some years ago in Iceland. Humble man and great soldier. I am sure he is now with with Heinrich Ehrler and the other pilots in Valhalla" RIP Ace
Gunter Rall held a leacture in a hanger at Reykjavik airport was on a flightday/airplaneshow. It was like 13-14 years ago. He was just like you see in this short clip. Looked fit for his age and enegenetic. Very interesting to listen to for anyone inerested in this period of history. Gave a credid to his adversaies even they wear not of same caliber as he himself.
My deepest respect for this man. There are german fighterwings named after Johannes Steinhoff and Von Richthoffen. There should also be a "Rall" and "Hartmann" Jagdgeschwader! Greetings from Dänemark.
Beautiful Film!!!
He is just saying that in order not to make the britfags feel bad. He knows british and russian air forces sucked balls while American Air Force was the only one who could keep up with the germans and japanese.
@ss90ss444 - Here we go again.. you're obviously completely obsessed with fags. Time to come out of the closet??
As far as RAF ad BoB is concerned, their tactics and radar systems were superior and was the tipping point that made them kick German Luftwaffe ass. Goering himself also helped the Brits to win of course..
these guys had to defend the skies over Germany, with ever decreasing insuffient manpower and means.
They had a completely incompetent supreme commander in the person of Hermann Goering, who was quite an ace during WW1, but knew NOTHING of areal tactics and was one of Hitlers "Yes"-boys.
my grandpa told me stories about rall, he was a mechanic and saw him sometimes and talked with him after flights. he never talked bad about him, rall was like an winged knight for him.
Say what you want about the Germans, but the fighter pilots of the Luftwaffe fought in a way that can only garner respect. They were a tough and determined group.
@Kiwigrunt the russians were brutal when they marched to Berlin. Mass rape, mass killing - it was revenge. Hartmann, another German ace who surrendered to the Russians, and he retells a story where a mother and daughter were raped throughout the night, and mother was shot in front of the daughter while being raped. the daughter killed herself that night with her father. This happened a lot.
point is, all sides did terrible things - and any economy of scale is doomed to justification.
This man was one of the men I would have loved meeting. He was a humble man, but a powerful figure at the same time. I hope he's flying in peaceful skies now. Rest in peace sir Günther Rall.
lots of people say the men in luftwaffe and the army were evil. they were not they were just fighting for their, most men in the german military service didn't even no at the time about the haulocaust
Oh please! The horrors visited on Russian civilians was widespread and systematic. Knowing that they wouldn't be held responsible encouraged them enormously. You cant tell me that every German soldier on the Eastern front didnt know what was going on thats utter rubbish.
OH PLEASE! - The horrors on the Russians true but the Russians also committed horrors on Eastern Europe and their own people. Not all Germans or Russians you can generalize just like Yanks (Vietnam etc.) so don't lecture about so called utter rubbish! I am a Aussie and the Japs committed their share but I don't hate or say the lot are evil - just the time and the regime. I mean you had BUSH and he wasn't completely honest although not evil. There needs to be a fair view. AC/DC
they had no time to train new pilots because they were in hell and needed to keep the moral up by being present, and no they wouldnt. Besides... you would never find enough germans to shoot at... just look at how outgunned those heroes were. The allied had quantity, not quality. They did not need quality. But now you have your films, you sure can dream.
where are you getting that from? There were formidable opposites and very critical moments for the Luftwaffe in many Battles, but the Luftwaffe was hopelessly outgunned and fought epic. I was referring to usmctanks1. You should look at the statistics how much enemy planes stood against a single german pilot at the end of the war. Quantity always wins and in the last days "sitting down to train recruits" surely was the smallest problem. Ps: watch your Language. PPS: Ihr Süßmaier Scheißdrech.
@000000AEA000000 I'd never say that the Luftwaffe pilots did not fight bravely - they sure did. You just have to acknowledge that you faced an enemy (in the RAF and USAAF) that fought and beat the best Germany had to offer. Check out what Robert Johnson had to say on the matter. P.S. Watch your language. Guten Tag.
@bazzaah If you put an equal number of p51's up against the 190 D the outcome would probably be fairly even as the two aircraft were a pretty even match. Swap the 190's for 262's n the USAF would have had it's ass handed to it on a plate.
@paul6t4 depends on who was flying the aircraft. In an ideal world, with equally good pilots on both sides then you would see which was the better aircraft, but, crucially whose were the better tactics.
@bazzaah tactics normally favour the defenders as they are over home soil and dont have the distance to travel allowing for more combat time and the more likely ability to get damaged aircraft back to base.(as in the Battle of Britain)
you have to blame the Luftwaffe for not using these highly experienced aces to train the new pilots coming up.. it never happened, they fought until the war ended or they were shot down. As quoted from a US pilot, better to have 135 pilots with 2- 5 kills then one with 70. If you extended the 50 mission limit out for the entire war, allied pilots totals would have equaled those of the luftwaffe 'experten' but they rotated back to teach others...
Not really, though the highest scoring American pilots would have gotten more victories if they didn't rotate, I still doubt they would have gotten kills along the same line as the Germans. This is because most of the Germans fought in the Eastern Front, where ranges were shorter and targets vastly more plentiful. Americans overwhelmed the Germans and were rarely outnumbered, the Germans, on the other hand, were always outnumbered. They simply had more targets to fight, while your average...
(part 2) American pilot would often fly his 50 missions and never see a German Aircraft. Even aces like Chuck Yeager, who got 11.5 kills (and made ace in a day) only saw the Germans about four or six times out of his entire 50 missions. The Germans on the Western Front, however, often were short on fuel and took off only to intercept the Americans, which mean they always saw them coming and always had a chance to fight.
Oh I am so sorry to hear this news!-I didn't know. What a giant of a pilot Gunther was, always spoke with great humility.Could have been the highest scoring ace of the war had he not been hospitalised with his broken back.
Terrible shame. Guys like him seperated the real pilots from the others. I read a story the other day of how Gunther crashed landed near a crashed Hurricane. he walked up to the wreck, pulled the pilot out and told him to get out before the search parties came, now theres real respect!
i have to say statisticly a small core of luftwaffe/japenese pilots just on the pilot survival length would proberly aquire that "x" factor of skill and experience that would be impossible with the allied pilot rotation system but they are a tiny proportion, most pilots allied or otherwise never scored a single kill throughout the war people fixtate on the eastern front but german pilots scored big
Heinrich Ehrler, who had 208 victories, was only 5 months from the wars end when he ran out of ammo and rammed his 262 into a B17. His last radio comunication was quoted as being "Theo. I have run out of ammunition. I'm going to ram this one. Good bye. We'll see each other in Valhalla" in german though of course.
@awesomefulmclovin Interesting how top 100 aces from WW2 where ALL on the axis side , almost everyone on the german side. There were some japanese , but either theyr score reaches above 100 kills or not is not known.
The answer is obvious! Many German Ace piots had fought in Spain in the 30's, Poland, Holland, Belgium, France, Battle Of Britain & the Eastern Front. Unlike the allies, the Germans NEVER rested their pilots, they stayed in action all most continually- Rall states this himself! The number of kills alone does not necessarily dictate who was the best fighter pilot. EG Sailor Malan nearly killed Vati Molders during BoB. He shot his Me109 up which just limped back to France, Vati took a bullet too.
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH The only things i know is that as far as i know these pilots "kill score" is from WW2 and most of the luftwaffe ace kills is against russians , who were mostly horribly trained rookies , an easy targets. But one man managed to take down 109 allied aircraft , altrough in wikipedia , its said its questioned either hes score is really that big.
Rall was shot down 5 times during the war. He faced a nazi-court in 1943, because his wife saved many jews and helped them to leave Nazi-Germany. But his name as a succesful pilot helped him and he went back to service. After the war he became he highest officer in the new German Luftwaffe. He retired 1975 from active service.
There it is-straight from the horses mouth, one of Germany's greatest Ace's! I have had this argument before on YT about the difference in kill ratios between allied & German pilot's. Unlike the RAF & USAF, the Luftwaffe never rested it's pilots. The RAF sent Ace pilots to training schools to pass on their knowledge & rest them. The German pilot's stayed in action almost continuously, hence they racked up big numbers of kills. Well said Gunther- RESPECT FROM BRITAIN TO A GREAT GERMAN PILOT! RIP
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Yeah this is something that I did not know as most war movies on ariel warfare in WW2 was about how great the RAF was in the battle of Britian which indeed it was.
I agree, it was very good of him to reveal the truth. That being said though I still think the German pilots were superior in the same facts that he laid out. The German pilots also had more time in the sky, thus could hone their flying skills a lot more than allied pilots. Russian pilots from what I have read were trained to stay in formation no matter what, and weren't allowed any freedom of action, so they fell victim to German tactics often.
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH not exactly right, for example, high command tried to convince rudell to retire from active flying service when he received the knights cross with golden leaves, swords and diamonds, but he refused the decoration if he would not be allowed to continue active flying service. and in fact they tried to convince most of the highly decorated aces of germany to become instructors and such, but most did not want to.
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Im glad a British admits a good German pilot! There was a joke in that time with the luftwaffe. Either u got a iron cross, or a wooden cross...
HORRIDO! I was lucky enough to meet this Gentleman three times. He took the time to talk with me for 30 minutes at an airshow. This man is the epitomy of integrity. May you always fly in clear skies Mr. Rall!
No, there's still few left but nobody lives forever... Kurt Dahlmann (Luftwaffe) Martin Drewes (Luftwaffe) Hermann Greiner (Luftwaffe) Rolf Hermichen (Luftwaffe) Franz Kieslich (Luftwaffe) Heinz Rökker (Luftwaffe) Wolfgang Schenck (Luftwaffe) Walter Schuck (Luftwaffe) Paul Zorner (Luftwaffe) ... and so one, maybe some are already gone.
I was able and Lucky enough to visit Herr Rall in April of this Year! what an interesting and kind Gentleman that he was! I will Miss him, R.I.P. his Legend will Live on! Horrido......

Why did the Germans score mor evictories:
1) They had to find a target - the German fighters had more enemy targets to find
2) Germans Aces continued to fight for longer
3) German fighters returned to combat after recovering from injury
4) Gernan pilots were more guilty of making up their number of victories

As far as RAF ad BoB is concerned, their tactics and radar systems were superior and was the tipping point that made them kick German Luftwaffe ass. Goering himself also helped the Brits to win of course..

After the failure of the Battle of Britain t
these guys had to defend the skies over Germany, with ever decreasing insuffient manpower and means.
They had a completely incompetent supreme commander in the person of Hermann Goering, who was quite an ace during WW1, but knew NOTHING of areal tactics and was one of Hitlers "Yes"-boys.

Well the Germans asked for it by attacking the whole damn Europe first, along with the USSR afterwards. Just like Dresden.
sobus24 5 months ago
@Kiwigrunt the russians were brutal when they marched to Berlin. Mass rape, mass killing - it was revenge. Hartmann, another German ace who surrendered to the Russians, and he retells a story where a mother and daughter were raped throughout the night, and mother was shot in front of the daughter while being raped. the daughter killed herself that night with her father. This happened a lot.
point is, all sides did terrible things - and any economy of scale is doomed to justification.

marvanme 2 years ago 4
they had no time to train new pilots because they were in hell and needed to keep the moral up by being present, and no they wouldnt. Besides... you would never find enough germans to shoot at... just look at how outgunned those heroes were. The allied had quantity, not quality. They did not need quality. But now you have your films, you sure can dream.
000000AEA000000 2 years ago 5
@000000AEA000000 bullshit. You think only quantity defeated the Luftwaffe? You stupid arrogant fuckwit.
bazzaah 2 years ago
where are you getting that from? There were formidable opposites and very critical moments for the Luftwaffe in many Battles, but the Luftwaffe was hopelessly outgunned and fought epic. I was referring to usmctanks1. You should look at the statistics how much enemy planes stood against a single german pilot at the end of the war. Quantity always wins and in the last days "sitting down to train recruits" surely was the smallest problem. Ps: watch your Language. PPS: Ihr Süßmaier Scheißdrech.
000000AEA000000 2 years ago
@bazzaah if you are not getting that it is an outstanding feat to hold out that long then that is your problem and we are wasting time.
Good Day.
000000AEA000000 2 years ago
@000000AEA000000 I'd never say that the Luftwaffe pilots did not fight bravely - they sure did. You just have to acknowledge that you faced an enemy (in the RAF and USAAF) that fought and beat the best Germany had to offer. Check out what Robert Johnson had to say on the matter. P.S. Watch your language. Guten Tag.
bazzaah 1 year ago
@bazzaah you answered to a 10 month old comment, to leave a childish "no you" statement?
I have seen your opinion buddy. Its yours. I dont know what you mean. But I dont have to. Where do I have to watch my language? cu
000000AEA000000 1 year ago
@bazzaah If you put an equal number of p51's up against the 190 D the outcome would probably be fairly even as the two aircraft were a pretty even match. Swap the 190's for 262's n the USAF would have had it's ass handed to it on a plate.
paul6t4 1 year ago
@paul6t4 depends on who was flying the aircraft. In an ideal world, with equally good pilots on both sides then you would see which was the better aircraft, but, crucially whose were the better tactics.
bazzaah 1 year ago
@bazzaah tactics normally favour the defenders as they are over home soil and dont have the distance to travel allowing for more combat time and the more likely ability to get damaged aircraft back to base.(as in the Battle of Britain)
paul6t4 1 year ago
@paul6t4 Only advantage a defender in the air has is loiter time. Nothing more...
GrigoriZhukov 1 year ago
@paul6t4 Nope you'd be wrong dead wrong....
GrigoriZhukov 1 year ago
you have to blame the Luftwaffe for not using these highly experienced aces to train the new pilots coming up.. it never happened, they fought until the war ended or they were shot down. As quoted from a US pilot, better to have 135 pilots with 2- 5 kills then one with 70. If you extended the 50 mission limit out for the entire war, allied pilots totals would have equaled those of the luftwaffe 'experten' but they rotated back to teach others...
usmctanks1 2 years ago
Not really, though the highest scoring American pilots would have gotten more victories if they didn't rotate, I still doubt they would have gotten kills along the same line as the Germans. This is because most of the Germans fought in the Eastern Front, where ranges were shorter and targets vastly more plentiful. Americans overwhelmed the Germans and were rarely outnumbered, the Germans, on the other hand, were always outnumbered. They simply had more targets to fight, while your average...
Hotshotter3000 2 years ago
(part 2) American pilot would often fly his 50 missions and never see a German Aircraft. Even aces like Chuck Yeager, who got 11.5 kills (and made ace in a day) only saw the Germans about four or six times out of his entire 50 missions. The Germans on the Western Front, however, often were short on fuel and took off only to intercept the Americans, which mean they always saw them coming and always had a chance to fight.

Terrible shame. Guys like him seperated the real pilots from the others. I read a story the other day of how Gunther crashed landed near a crashed Hurricane. he walked up to the wreck, pulled the pilot out and told him to get out before the search parties came, now theres real respect!
Hennersbass 2 years ago
i have to say statisticly a small core of luftwaffe/japenese pilots just on the pilot survival length would proberly aquire that "x" factor of skill and experience that would be impossible with the allied pilot rotation system but they are a tiny proportion, most pilots allied or otherwise never scored a single kill throughout the war people fixtate on the eastern front but german pilots scored big
kill ratios on the western/deserts fronts as well
PETEEAT 2 years ago
Heinrich Ehrler, who had 208 victories, was only 5 months from the wars end when he ran out of ammo and rammed his 262 into a B17. His last radio comunication was quoted as being "Theo. I have run out of ammunition. I'm going to ram this one. Good bye. We'll see each other in Valhalla" in german though of course.

@awesomefulmclovin Interesting how top 100 aces from WW2 where ALL on the axis side , almost everyone on the german side. There were some japanese , but either theyr score reaches above 100 kills or not is not known.
cyberdaemon 2 years ago
The answer is obvious! Many German Ace piots had fought in Spain in the 30's, Poland, Holland, Belgium, France, Battle Of Britain & the Eastern Front. Unlike the allies, the Germans NEVER rested their pilots, they stayed in action all most continually- Rall states this himself! The number of kills alone does not necessarily dictate who was the best fighter pilot. EG Sailor Malan nearly killed Vati Molders during BoB. He shot his Me109 up which just limped back to France, Vati took a bullet too.
LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH 2 years ago 2
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH The only things i know is that as far as i know these pilots "kill score" is from WW2 and most of the luftwaffe ace kills is against russians , who were mostly horribly trained rookies , an easy targets. But one man managed to take down 109 allied aircraft , altrough in wikipedia , its said its questioned either hes score is really that big.
cyberdaemon 2 years ago

RIP

@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH Yeah this is something that I did not know as most war movies on ariel warfare in WW2 was about how great the RAF was in the battle of Britian which indeed it was.
bloobear1 1 year ago
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH
I agree, it was very good of him to reveal the truth. That being said though I still think the German pilots were superior in the same facts that he laid out. The German pilots also had more time in the sky, thus could hone their flying skills a lot more than allied pilots. Russian pilots from what I have read were trained to stay in formation no matter what, and weren't allowed any freedom of action, so they fell victim to German tactics often.
blucher45 1 year ago
@LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH not exactly right, for example, high command tried to convince rudell to retire from active flying service when he received the knights cross with golden leaves, swords and diamonds, but he refused the decoration if he would not be allowed to continue active flying service. and in fact they tried to convince most of the highly decorated aces of germany to become instructors and such, but most did not want to.
