The last thing L saw before he died was Light's grinning face, which told him that Light was Kira, Light had arranged his death, and that Light had won. L had lost. Then he closed his eyes. What a crappy death for such a great character. After he dies, the series just gets boring, with the exception of Light's death. Mello and Near are not up to the standards L set.
