  • Will ham radio work after a neclear explosion?

  • Do we need to pick? I love xbox. If we're talking emergency, I'd have to say radio. If we're talking normal day, I'm going to have to go with the xbox.

  • Ham too. I laugh when people think there cells will work in a catastrophic storm or quake. They don't understand the infrastructure needed for cell phones to operate, just let them believe that little cell is puttin'out some watts right to the phone on the receiving end,Sure...understanding radio transmission is cool,Not X-box

  • Amateur radio wins 100% of the time. Nice job! I have my general and next month my extra..

  • I like the people that say cell phones... I'm not a ham or anything just a bit of interest in all electronics. There's two major flaws in the cell phone fall back.

    1) The tower is likely going to be down in an emergency such as a flood or storm.

    2) If the tower is "operationally" functioning during the emergency they are not designed nor capable of handling the amount of traffic they would receive. Meaning your calls out would either go immediately busy or be dropped.

  • Great vid. I was the "nerd" always having a radio on my side hell I would even have two sometimes for Fire and ham but when we had the hurricanes here in Fl I wonder who got to talk to people and find out information before anyone because they were involved with ARES/RACES/SATERN/ through the local EOC. hmm Me. I was 1st licensed at 16 I'm now a week away from my 22nd birthday. i enjoy the occasional video game but I would rather spend my money on useful things. Thank you

  • Been there done that... take the radio... then buy the guns and ammo.

  • I live in california, I'm going xbox.

  • I'd spend my money on guns/knives so in an emergency I can steal your radio and anything else I can run away with. :D (incudling your buddys xbox) hee hee

  • like your video. Might talk to you some time if you can hit baraboo .880 I'm kc9koq in The corner on the state. keep working on your friends My son is thinking of becoming a ham soon.

  • Excellent point. I am currently studying for my Tech, Its nice to see the younger generation keep the hobby going. thanks a lot for posting this. keep up the good work.

  • Ham radio.

  • Ham radio for sure..

I think in a real situation though the people who said XBOX would soon change their minds after thery run out of fuel.. Or they need to get a message somewhere.

It would actually be possible if someone would write the software to transmit the packets from the xbox live over the radio, maybe as packet or Dstar so you could combine both.

    Congrats on the Tech License

  • RADIO

  • i would pefer to have ham radio any day over a game system. us fellow hams are a very important part of emergency communcations. i am to be a ham my call sign is KJ4FDQ

  • i totally agree with you kid. I was once stuck in a bloody tornado and i only had my stinkin xbox, i tried to go to the store to get a generator but the store had blown away! Bugger i thought, i wish i had a HAM RADIO.

    Kid you smart!

Although u cant play COD of duty on a pork radio, so i aint so certain?

  • You know it's funny, I just retired (@46) And I thought i'd buy a video game system as i have time now. I opted to spend the time and study for the Ham tests on QRZ.com. after two weeks of long hours I took my tec and gen test and did very well,

I missed 6 out of 70 questions, I bought a yeasu ft-8800r, and hoked it up as a base station, I am going back for my extra this thusday. I could have spent the same amount of effort (and money) on a video ganme system and had nothing to show for it. 73

  • Ham Radio. When I get it lol.

  • ham radio of course.......

    ve7tyb

  • I choose the Amateur Radio. When I got my license as a teenager several years ago we did not have high speed internet out here. Ham radio was my link to the world and still is a great passion. You may want to check into ARES (and RACES if/when you are 18 y.o.) and get involved if you have not done so already. Take time to enjoy, have fun, and learn more about radio in the good times and apply what you have learned and know in the bad times with emergency communications. 73

  • @ab8xx Oh and by the way: get a pelican case to store your 2m HT and accessories in. They are waterproof, crush resistant, and are downright rugged. That way the thing will work after "tornado has rattled it around" lol. Also keep a fresh set of batteries in there. Get an external magnet mount antenna to put on a car or cookie sheet as a ground plane to extend it's range. This makes for a true grab and go radio kit.

  • lets assume for the sake of discussion, that the tornado blew that radio out of your hand and smashed it against a brick wall into a million pieces?

or what if your batteries supernova'd?

  • @Drafter3 most of the hand held ham radios have a strap to carry them with and the mobiles can be mounted to almost anything that will hold it down plus we can make emergecy kits to carry our radio equipment in

  • @Drafter3

Similar stuff happens all the time. Good Hams have back-up. Many Hams have extra gear they can share with somebody who has an equipment problem. There are Hams who don't use any other equipment other then what they build. When Katrina hit New Orleans, ALL COMMUNICATION was wiped out including the local Ham radio repeaters. It was only a matter of hours that hams started responding. They responded from local areas as well as Nationwide.

  • It is so refreshing seeing a level-headed youngster on youtube. I've got xbox and a wii and would trade them in a minute for more radio gear. You've completely got the right idea.

  • Ham wins. Xbox sucks, and so do your friends. Ha!

  • Ham radio all the way

    Emergency comms are life saveing

  • Hey there! I myself have both a Ham Radio and an Xbox 360. Yeah, the Xbox is cool, sure, but Ham Radio is much more interesting to me. 73's Have a good one.

  • Either way your a nerd. But Xbox is useless in real life, fun but useless. You made the right choice.

  • Well I would have the ham radio anyday.. I have just passed my foundation which is like the US technician licence.. We dont get many emergency situations here in the UK like you guys do, but its better than being sat infront of a tv all day playing games.....

  • HAM RADIO!!!!!!!!

    FOR SHURE!!!!!

And to all those mush heads out there (the ones who are going to get a generator) spending your days in front of a TV screen, I am praying for you that in a case where you need your friends help, that heel give it to YOU!

Im taking my techchnical exam may 8th!

    wish me luck!!!

  • u people need lives, oh boy a ham radio, i think thats what a cell phone is for... *cough* nerds *cough*

  • @ethanwj14 Cell phones are just expensive radios (They work on a portion of the UHF Band) that you need to pay monthly to use. Ham Radio is free, other than getting a radio which is actually the same cost as a fancy cell phone now. Any by the way, I have a life, that's a little insulting.

    HAM Radio all the way

  • Ham radio of course. what are they going to do when the satellites fail or crash to earth. That means no telephone, television, and internet. So who are they going to come crying to. People that use ham radios. They need to wake up.

  • You are a wise young man.

  • i could go on and on about thouse kids who have no ability beyond sitting in front of a mind scrambling tv. when the xbox doesnt work and they want to know whats going on tell them im sorry but youll need a radio good bye.

tell them to watch fall of the republic ( v=F8LPNRI_6T8) and when the net is shut down during the next national emergency you wont be a geek your be god.

  • I will take the radio please!!

  • An XBOX over a HAM RADIO? Lulz... are your friends on crack? Seriously though, I can't see how a bunch of xbox gamer fanboys could have the right to call anyone a loser or whatever, may wanna point that out to 'em, since gaming is like the geekiest hobby known to mankind.

When a f-3 tornado comes through, and you're the only one able to get any information about what's going on, i guarantee they'll change their tunes.

    Get that general, bro!

  • Thank you so much for all of the veiws and comments. 73 to all of you.

  • Keep up the good video work and ham radio. You will talk to some interesting people on HF from all over the world.

Pitcaran Island is a interesting place where there are ham radio operators.

The home of the Bounty in Bounty bay where she rest.

  • Radio is way better, no internet no xbox as you say.

On hf radio you can have worldwide communications or at least over there in the usa statewide communications with a wire antenna up a tree and low power on the hf frequencies.

And there are neat modes that use computers aswell like psk31 and rtty and sstv and so on.

There are so many things to do in this hobbie, talking thru the space station on a handheld radio is neat aswell !!!!

  • Congrats on your lisence! I got min back on march! And just upgrades to general on friday! my lisence hasnt shown it yet but it will change from KI6WTX to a general class call! I am also in school AND...i would rather have a HT or a HF rig that i can communicate with!!!!

    73's KI6WTX/AG

  • Congrats on using your brain! Ham radio is a really cool pursuit - you learn about the physics of the real world and how it works instead of a virtual game world. I wish you many years of enjoyment. Steve VK3TDX

  • Keep going

Game consoles are for looser....they waste their money for a Xbox360 although Microsoft is already developing a new console.

  • congratulations on passing your technical license.

Might want to point out that VOIP (used by XBox live, skpe etc) was developed by radio amateurs.

Anyway for me amateur radio wins over Xbox 360

Hope to see you down the log.
