My sister only had GE washers her entire life, when they got married back in 1971 their trailer had GE straight vane washer and believe me it got a workout almost daily and never had to be worked on in 14 years, then she bought a new GE when they moved in their new home in 1984 and kept it till 1998 then bought a nother new GE set in 1998. None of them were ever worked on and believe me my sister could pack a washer and come out clean! They outlasted both her and her husband.
Check out that cool indexing tub on the Westy...I use to reach under and play with it as a kid when watching for endless amounts of time...thanks for the memories. I use to throw my GI Joes in the washer so that they could be devoured by the ramp action. :)
If I'm not mistaken, it's missing on this one. My mom had one just like this (but white) and it was a oblong basket that hinged where the water is coming out...
My god...how much water is in this thing? I guess you can call this machine The Abyss; you put in the towels and they just disappear. Awesome. The modern two piece agitators just can't handle this kind of load. Try it with one of them and you're courting disaster...lol
The Westinghouse and Frigidaire 1-18 definitely handle some really large loads. This Westinghouse is not vigorous like the GE but it actually does do a pretty good job cleaning. You just can't overload or the performance goes down.
@jons1077 I had a G.E. and a Westinghouse washer. The only advantage the General Electric had over the Westinghouse was a faster spin speed. I found the Westinghouse more dependable then the G.E.. That's no lie!
i prefer the ge over the westy....my mother had one for 20 years with no problems...i got rid of it and bought her a new lady kenmore...today i could kick myself that was the best washer.....we really didn;t need all the fancy gadgets....hers only had one cycle, 2 water levels and hot or warm wash with warm rinse....they don't build them like that anymore
As for the GE in this video; I agree that the GE washer is the better of the 2. It draws the clothes (or in this case, towels) down better than the Westinghouse. I like the Westinghouse for the capacity, as my Aunt Dawn had one. She had a Maytag for 15 years, then got a Frigidaire, based on the similar indexing tub. I personally don't like that, as I feel clothes don't draw down too well.
@davenwin1973 Westinghouse used to use a much deeper ramp agitator at one time. If they would've stayed with that agitator, there would be no difference between the two. Check out the video of the "westy deep ramp" and you'll see what I mean.
I'm using the green 2-piece deep ramp in mine right now and it works so much better, I'll do a video of it soon. Thanks for posting this, it almost makes me want to hook my GE back up again.
I really like the old top load washing machines because for some reason, I like the sound of it, and I like how the adjitator turns the clothes.

@rockypallo I like the sound of the splashing of the water.

@tvtimetravel I do too; I like the sound of it and the splashing of the water at the same time.
