didn't i see an article of you in Mother Earth News? How is it going by the way? Are your buckets doubled? Top with soil bottom with water or are my eyes playing tircks on me? anyway glad to see your sweet little garden! And the variety is nice to see also! This gives me renewed hope! ^_^
@drychalice Then you have a problem with the entire design of the fire escape. The window to get out, barely opens. The radiator that you need to step on is shaky at best. The part alongside the building is only about 6 inches. The plants are the least of the issues.
Can you answer something for me because I completely agree about the whole self reliance and self sufficient movement but it looks like the garden you have save the herb plants is that you only get one or two uses out of them before you have to wait weeks again before they are ready for harvesting again but I know as a fellow human being you have to eat every day. Is it more about minimizing your impact on the world than creating a complete independence from the store bought variety?
@supercooled On average food travels 1,500 from farm to plate, so any amount that you are not sourcing from the store is a good thing. I am by no means going to completely supply myself with this small space, but the little bit will certainly help.
I really enjoyed watching your videos tonight. You have such a small place and yet you use it so wisely with all that you plant. You have given me many idea's for a garden in my own back yard. Did you ever figure out what went wrong with planting the herbs in the bottles? Keep making these videos! You are an inspiration to all who watch these videos. I am very envious of you but I guess I can try to do this myself. Gotta start somewhere and it would be cheaper than buying veggies all the time.
@Momintx1 Thanks for the comment. The upside down ones never worked out for me. I put the caps back on them and grew out of the top. Worked much better.

I grow on my balcony as well in simular containers Bro my question is the the theory behind the pipe you have in youre containers. Watering would be the reason but is this watering method better then just watering the soil?
The reason for watering this way is because it's more natural as the roots suck up the water as they are thirsty as they do in nature. When you water from above, the second you walk away the plant is thirsty again.
goes to show you can do it even in a small space in a large city. i have lots of stuff still growing from the summer(winter here in australia now) the chili are still going. the ones in pots are even better. i can put them out of the frosts when we have them.
awesome. even though summer just started need to start thinking winter planning. what would you recommend for winter growing? you gonna post your greenhouses anywhere?
how mild has your summer been?, winter is comming to a close here. i have been growing new chili and stuff in the heated propagator. i actually put some lettuce in a container outside. days are getting warmer.
it finally reached 90+ yesterday for the first time, so it's been a cooler summer. my peppers are starting to turn red, which is nice. going to but some more lettuce tomorrow to get one more round going.
90 for the first time. i looked on the guage here and it was 65 yesterday and its still winter. im starting to get things going. geez last summer we had 105 for 2 weeks. and a record 118f. that was the day that made the worst fires in history.
hey thats a great garden! Hope you had a great time creating it !

@davettalashley Water does drain out of the bottom of the hanging plants. Didn't cause any yellow.

I didn't make the laws in N.Y.C.
If you are rated out, you will receive a summons, believe it.
I believe it something like $250 or $500.
If you don't believe me, ask a fireman in your city.
drychalice 10 months ago
@drychalice I'm no longer in NYC. I always told people that j-walking is also illegal. It's just a matter of it's enforced or not.

Its against the law to clotter anything on a fire-scape.
If someone dies in a fire, (God forbid), tripping and falling on the fire-scape.
Prepare for a law-suit or at least a very heavy fine.

What is the copper pipe for?
younitehumanity 10 months ago
@younitehumanity To water the plants. They are self-watering containers.
CanarsieBK 10 months ago
@younitehumanity Copper will contaminate the plants. I once killed my neighbors tree with copper nails. You might want to try plastic pipes.
younitehumanity 10 months ago
@younitehumanity PVC will contaminate the soil and water. I've stopped using the pipes all together now.

Nice use of space.
A great compost for container or small space gardens is adding used coffee and tea grounds to the soil. Then add few nighcrawlers or bait worms.
Its so nice to grow and pick your own veggies.
Nice video!
