I have a black/yellow 09 R1 as well. My friend has a Fireblade and keeps telling me his is better lol...so of course this vid is going on his Facebook wall haha.
The Blade is too small and cramped for me, although it's obviously a great bike. The 2009 R1 I'm currently racing is the best bike FOR ME that I've ever ridden (and I include in that argument newer, more advanced bikes like the S1000RR). To each his own though, I know a lot of people aren't as fond of it as I am. Might have something to do with me coming from a twin (KTM RC8), but I wouldn't change my bike for anything out right now (OK, a 2012 R1 perhaps, TC would be nice sometimes, hehe).
This engine would be AWESOME in a Street Fighter! It would blow away all other naked bikes, includeing the Speed Triple with its 3 cylilnder!! Just the thought of this amazeing engine in a Street Fighter gets me excited. I hope Yamaha is working on it as i type this, and i hope they bring it State side very soon.
Funny thing is that Honda they are testing is damaged. You can hear the motor whining in the vid when it's at idle adnthe are revving the Honda. The crank has a nasty habit if eating it spoket and taking the clutch basket with it. That is probably where the low end grunt went. The cluch basket and crank were damaged on this testing mule. I know it happened to my 08 cbr
i respect both bikes as they are sexier than ninja and gixxer. That is why ill be sitting on both and riding both. CBR without a doubt looks better, more like a sportbike and less like a cockeyed retarded baby face like the r6 + r1
I don't know that the R1 is so difficult to get used to. I've ridden and owned both inline fours and twins (GSX-R 1000 K7, a Fireblade, KTM SuperDuke R, KTM RC8 etc) and my 2009 R1 is probably the easiest to ride out of the bunch. The chassis is so good all you do is countersteer the thing into the corner, crank the throttle and it'll keep the line. Cut my previous best time at a certain track by three seconds the second track session. It is bloody amazing. I actually prefer it to the BMW.
They can, but pursuit for perfect weight ratio doesnt go with the philosophy, and by the way, they have 800cc bikes at motogp with crossplane cranks :)
Honda created the NR750 with absolute passion, never mind the cost or power to weight.
oh man.. the honda fireblade will be smoke by the r1.. the honda fireblade can be using by the old woman because of the friendly powers..not the r1.. r1 is not for beginners!!! crossplane crankshaft on the bike will you go the hell with the bike!!
This is what I don't get, honda intentionally gave the fireblade more of a smooth power feeling so that you could crank it out of turns and not kill yourself like you would on the r1, they make it seem like honda can't build a bike with crazy power when the fact is they could but it would become unmanagable and more of a pain in the ass to ride because the bike is throwing you around, yamaha didn't make some break through with power, and most people mod there bikes anyway. Idk
mi punto de bista es que es mejor la honda tengo una yamaha pero todos sabemos que es mejor la honda por eso yo le voy a la honda y honda quiero ser y honda soy
I notice everyone saying the CBR is the better bike.
I'm going on my personal opinion. I love the r1, i mean i've wanted one sense i could remember, i've been all over the country on my friends r1, him with a CBR, so naturally we swapped, i find the CBR to be a nice bike, but it lacks something, i find hondas bigger cc bikes to lack, anything over a 600 id pick a yamaha. Though if your abit causious and not sure of yourself, id pick the fireblade, R1 is rawr power, scary and times but more fun
@clondonlad To be honest, I'd pick Kawasaki. Although the company doesn't make the fastest superbikes (but honestly, rider skill determines speed more than power), those bikes are the most comfortable of any 600cc+ sportbikes.
What are the riding positions like on both of the bikes? Traditionally, Yamaha's riding positions are wrist destroyers. Even though the R1 won this test, I would still buy the Honda due to it's less agressive riding position!
Car and moto manufacturers need to start hiring people that can actually pronounce their brands. Hollywood needs to start hiring Asians who can actually speak Mandarin.
Legislation causes different results and so be it.When bike is 16hp down on best in class (146 R1 with 162hp for ZX-10 in 2009 US tests) but loses only little on top(162 vs 170 in UK) with huge grunt, that makes it different bike all together.
What causes such a loss in Yamaha and why? US bike is still fast and interesting for the use of new technologies, but when you watch US vs Euro tests,R1 seems to be absolutely different bike, power wise!!
Is there simple reason for such a huge power loss?
Why are all US bikes so weak compare to Euro or UK ones. 09'R1 in US has around 146hp from every test and torque is just o.k. It's down on 08'model,which was around 153 hp. I guess, that new model is down on power everywhere( well 5-7hp) and that'd be fine,if it had such a huge low and mid power and grunt. But, CBR is grunt king over not just R1,but others too
I have trouble to figure, what it is. Also, in UK test, this new R1 has 162hp. That's 16hp up on US bike!!! What's the cause of it?!
@dazzelya Yeah man, that's true. I live in the US for a little while and was first shocked to see those octane numbers. I was used to 93-95 and 97 or 8 and here it's 87-89-91 or 93 and best 95, hehe....No wonder factories have problems with this kind of shite and it kills your engine too, car or bike.
@checkie4ever I would say emissions standards, they are getting stricter every year. In Cali they are cracking down on aftermarket exhaust that eliminates the the catalytic converter. You can gain all the power lost back with an exhaust upgrade.
@checkie4ever I also just found out that US R1's have a limiter on the throttle bodies to keep them from fully opening, this is also for emissions and noise standards. The ecu can be reflashed to allow the throttle bodies to fully open.
@Bartholomeusismyname i doubt they were using above 80% throttle right out of twisties, which is where they felt this "grunt" anyway. The ECU flash is more for straight drag/street racing. The R1 is just a machine in general. Keep in mind, the same restrictions applied to the Fireblade too.
For ONCE IM GOING TO SSAY THIS FUCK YAMAHAA FUCK THEM !!! im going to you why.. i fucking hate everyone taling about them saying there fastest bike on the rode the best !! what the fuck do they KNOw !!! cock faces !!! nowa days its the bmw 1000s that do the pulling
NOT that my VIEWPOINT is slanted or anything, but I KNEW that's why I liked my R1 over my Husband's CBR 1000 RR. No wonder why I smoke him in the twistees because instructors that have seen me ride along with my husband say I AM THE MORE TECHNICALLY talented rider of us both. The FEMALE WINS with YAMAHA R1 over the second place MALE with HONDA CBR 1000 RR!
@AmericanIron01 i did own a Honda cr 250 1990 dirtbike once and it was a very good bike. now i dont think that there is a very big big difference in how good the engine build is between yamaha and honda.
Yamaha all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2009 and on wards arent of my liking but they r good love the 2007 and 08 models. BMW's are fancy but still prefer the Yamaha
there making the CBR sound like a 600cc... its a wopping 1000cc for goodness sake.. these guys are buzzing... sure theres alittle offset on the price tags but permormance wise its like comparing a Lambo to a Ferrari
"learn to ride properly" if only everyone else paid attention to that statement. there wouldnt be as much motorcycle accidents as there unfortunately are.
@wondereyedrive Very true. I am going to stay with my 'tarded DR650 for a few more years before I get onto one of these monsters. If I had one now I doubt I would see my next birthday. It amazes me that guys who have only been riding for a year or two go out and buy litre bikes, maybe I am just getting old.
Point in case; Just this weekend in Western Australia, a 40 year old man died in a bike accident after losing control and veering off into oncoming traffic. He had his open class license for less then a week and his bike, a 1000cc Harley, he had just picked up in the morning. Tragic.
@wondereyedrive I live in QLD and it is real easy to get a bike license here - 1 day course for a restricted bike license. I have my open license but will keep my tractor like DR650 for a few years yet. I am 36, only been riding for 2 years but I am by no means over the hill, still have good reflexes, eyesight, hearing, spacial judgement and all that but a liter sports bike would be the death of me. I think guys underestimate how quick they actually are, or over estimate their ability, or both.
In Perth you need to have a 250 license for at least a year before you can apply for an open class license. But I think the main issue is; when you do get it, there is no restriction on what bike you can buy. And some sports bikes, like the R1 and Suzuki Hayabusa, are insanely quick. The guys in this vid show that not anyone can just jump on a bike and ride hard. Plus over here in Perth, you see guys riding sports bikes in jeans and t-shirts all the time. Thats just nuts!
@wondereyedrive In QLD if you had an open car lic you could do a 1 - 3 day course and go straight to your "O" bike lic. It has changed now so you can only get a restricted lic and have to ride a LAMS approved bike for a year, after that you can ride whatever you like. Mind you, some of the LAMS approved bikes are pretty quick too. I can understand the temptation to get a litre bike and I probably will one day but my sense of self preservation is stopping me for the time being.
@wondereyedrive I having been riding the DR for 2 yrs and realise I can not come close to riding it to its full potential, maybe I am just a gumby rider. Nevertheless, it still needs to be treated with a fair amount of respect even though it is not exactly quick. Funnily enough it was watching bike crashes on Youtube that made me think twice about getting a high powered bike, a lot of crashes seem to be due to inexperienced riders on big horse power bikes. How about you, what do you ride?
Hahaha, Ive done the exact same. Watching some Rossi vids, then R1 vids, then stumbled across ALOT of crash vids! I started out with a Vespa, that Ive still got. Moved up to a 1991 Honda CBR 250. Old bike, but super reliable and quite quick. Funny thing is though, I still find myself taking out the vespa occassionally!
@wondereyedrive The guy who does all the servicing and upgrades on my bike bought his wife a vespa for chrissy, she wanted a CRF250 but has never ridden before so he thought the vespa would be a safer bet, anyway she hated it so he is now riding it to work. I laughed when I saw him the other day - he is 6 feet tall covered in tatts and was riding a pink vespa to work. He said it is bloody fun to ride though.
Hahaha, that would be a classic to see. They are fun though. Cos you dont have the speed or pick up. You are forced to take it easy and enjoy the ride.
Im not quite sure. I'm no Harley expert! But you are on the money. It would've been the poor guy's dream bike or something. Openned it up a little and lost it. Real sad.
@tubbybasset I agree. This summer, after 15 years of riding a 600cc (YZF) I wanted to buy a 1000cc bike. But after a test ride I was sure, this wouldn't be a good idea. I was always thinking, this bike is riding me and not the other way round, like it should be. Obviously my skills are not good enough...I prefer a life without a wheel chair. So I bought the Triumph Street Triple.
@MrTuffgong11 haha, The speed triple is a nice sedate bike:) Funnily enough I was actually looking at the new speed triple in a Triumph brochure at my local bike dealer the other day, sweet bike, I think from memory they make a 600 and a 1000? Which one did you get?
@tubbybasset The Street Triple has 675cc and the Speed Triple 1080cc. I got the Street Triple. The comments on this bike are so fantastic (best naked bike in this class), so I had to buy it and I think it was the right decision.
@MrTuffgong11 Nice one! I have only ever heard good things about the speed/street triple and they look as tough as hell. The street/speed triple is very high on my list of bikes to check out when I eventually replace the DR650. How long before you can take it out for a serious ride? I take it you must be in the Northern Hemisphere as we here in the Southern Hemisphere can ride all year round, mind you it can get awfully hot in leathers some days even barreling along at a fair pace.
@tubbybasset Well, in Berlin the Winter lasts normally until April (Russia is not far away). We still had snow at Easter. Don't you have any Winter where you come from ? By the way, my first ride will be literally my first one because at the time when I decided to get this bike, it was November and we had a lot of snow - it was just too late for a testride, but I trust all these positive feedbacks to this bike.
@MrTuffgong11 I am in Sth West Queensland in Australia. We get a winter but not like you guys (I spent some time in Germany in Winter - COLD!). It gets to maybe -2 degrees but never snows. Most winter days the top temp is around 18 - 20 degrees, perfect for riding. You have had a street triple sitting in your garage since November and have not been able to take it for a ride! Man you have my sympathy, that would send me insane. But I think the first ride will be the best ride you have ever had.
@tubbybasset No, it's still in the Triumph shop. It's already paid but I'm gonna fetch it in April. You are a lucky guy as an Australian. Must be fantastic to live there. Unfortunately it is too far away (from here). So, wish you a happy new year and a bike season without a crash...
@MrTuffgong11 Thanks and a happy New Year to you! Where I live gets quite hot, so some days you either ride without leathers, which I prefer not to do, or you don't ride. We are pretty much the opposite extreme to Germany. I really feel like a ride today (wife is annoying me) but it is 38 degrees and the thought of getting geared up is not very appealing so I doubt I will venture out. You guys have amazing roads too, the quality of your worst roads are superior to many Australian roads.
YAMAHAAAAAA...R1 IS BEST IF U R A VERY GOOD RIDER..ITS NOT FOR THE NOVICE:) U NEED TO KNOW HOW TO RIDE A BIKE.U CANT SAY R1 IS BAD AS U CANT RIDE IT.PROBABLY U RIDE A 100CC BIKE AND HAD A FIRST TIME RIDE ON YAMAHA R1 LOL
yamaha is bestest cuz they have all match kinds of yamha like boat n atv n dirty bike lol so yamaha is bestest but bmw rr1000 r bestest too tho they r hottest than gf or wife lol i would ride it all day
@nachospole1 i think it would be a big step, you shout try with a 600,i drive a honda tornado 250 and im about to buy a cbr 600 because the fireblade is to big and more powerfull, so i suggest the 600 my friend and then get a 1000
the r1 has 146hp the fireblade has 148hp the CBR1000RR is the quickest jap liter bike and has the best midrange the 2009-2010model has the best top end then any fireblade before the gsxr1000 is the only bike that has a better top end then the fireblade as far as liter bike and it wieghs the less, the R1 is the heaviest liter bike and personal i think yamaha fucked the r1 up they should sticked with the inline 4 and just work on the r1's low end..
@Snookenas agreed and honda built the better bike....i think most of us can agree when it comes to the best manufacture there is NO,NADA. NOTHING that makes a more reliable, better, respect, user power friendly, street friendlier ..all in one package motorcycle then HONDA
I have never heard of anyone buying a bike based on the idea of it crashing, most of us tend to buy a bike based on what it does when its on both wheels.
@Stuntman175 Well the crank and to the wheels are way different. Also ram air makes no difference unless you are moving so ram air would not effect the numbers from a dyno run. I was talking about power to the wheels, you know the REAL power your bike shows when you are riding it. Crank numbers are useless because it does not show true power, the wheel power is what you go by.
FIREBLADE CBR1000RR is nothing compare to R1... personaly, honda big cc's (above 750cc) sucks.. truly valuable high end bike... above 750cc go for yamaha...
use to ride on fireblade CBR400RR.. no problems.. but for the higher version most of my friends complained of late power or late in coming... my personal verdict is
CBR400RR or CBR600RR is better than yamaha FZR400 or R6 but for high end.. of course its R1 way.. much better CBR1000RR fireblade...
to me the only downfall of the yamaha is that if you over 6 feet tall it's not the bike for you it seems like they make the bike smaller and smaller every year
@peppaboy9 if thats true then good thing i got a 05 r1 im about 6'3ish 170lbs and it fits me good.. i can either ride stretched or almost straight up bc my long arms.. i like it it fits me well
Both AMAZING bikes. I have a Yamaha but I'm waaay more of a Honda fan. Should of goten one before I got the Yammy. but the yammy is still excellent none the less and has been really good so far. Now all i need to do is get the carbs sync'd.
I haven´t been beaten yet on my way to the store. I have beaten both R1s and CBRs for several years now. I have a chappy with 70cc and 19mm carb. Mind you i have a shorter distance over there but still.
as good as it gets

NOT that my VIEWPOINT is slanted or anything, but I KNEW that's why I liked my R1 over my Husband's CBR 1000 RR. No wonder why I smoke him in the twistees because instructors that have seen me ride along with my husband say I AM THE MORE TECHNICALLY talented rider of us both. The FEMALE WINS with YAMAHA R1 over the second place MALE with HONDA CBR 1000 RR!

"learn to ride properly" if only everyone else paid attention to that statement. there wouldnt be as much motorcycle accidents as there unfortunately are.
wondereyedrive 1 year ago
@wondereyedrive Very true. I am going to stay with my 'tarded DR650 for a few more years before I get onto one of these monsters. If I had one now I doubt I would see my next birthday. It amazes me that guys who have only been riding for a year or two go out and buy litre bikes, maybe I am just getting old.
tubbybasset 1 year ago
@tubbybasset
Point in case; Just this weekend in Western Australia, a 40 year old man died in a bike accident after losing control and veering off into oncoming traffic. He had his open class license for less then a week and his bike, a 1000cc Harley, he had just picked up in the morning. Tragic.
wondereyedrive 1 year ago
@wondereyedrive I live in QLD and it is real easy to get a bike license here - 1 day course for a restricted bike license. I have my open license but will keep my tractor like DR650 for a few years yet. I am 36, only been riding for 2 years but I am by no means over the hill, still have good reflexes, eyesight, hearing, spacial judgement and all that but a liter sports bike would be the death of me. I think guys underestimate how quick they actually are, or over estimate their ability, or both.
tubbybasset 1 year ago
@tubbybasset
Thats just nuts!
wondereyedrive 1 year ago
@wondereyedrive In QLD if you had an open car lic you could do a 1 - 3 day course and go straight to your "O" bike lic. It has changed now so you can only get a restricted lic and have to ride a LAMS approved bike for a year, after that you can ride whatever you like. Mind you, some of the LAMS approved bikes are pretty quick too. I can understand the temptation to get a litre bike and I probably will one day but my sense of self preservation is stopping me for the time being.
tubbybasset 1 year ago
@tubbybasset
Its a shame not everyone has the same mindset. People just want the biggest and fastest bike regardless of experience.
wondereyedrive 1 year ago
@wondereyedrive I having been riding the DR for 2 yrs and realise I can not come close to riding it to its full potential, maybe I am just a gumby rider. Nevertheless, it still needs to be treated with a fair amount of respect even though it is not exactly quick. Funnily enough it was watching bike crashes on Youtube that made me think twice about getting a high powered bike, a lot of crashes seem to be due to inexperienced riders on big horse power bikes. How about you, what do you ride?
tubbybasset 1 year ago
@tubbybasset
Funny thing is though, I still find myself taking out the vespa occassionally!
wondereyedrive 1 year ago
@wondereyedrive The guy who does all the servicing and upgrades on my bike bought his wife a vespa for chrissy, she wanted a CRF250 but has never ridden before so he thought the vespa would be a safer bet, anyway she hated it so he is now riding it to work. I laughed when I saw him the other day - he is 6 feet tall covered in tatts and was riding a pink vespa to work. He said it is bloody fun to ride though.
tubbybasset 1 year ago
@tubbybasset
Hahaha, that would be a classic to see. They are fun though. Cos you dont have the speed or pick up. You are forced to take it easy and enjoy the ride.
wondereyedrive 1 year ago
@wondereyedrive 1000cc Harley.... must be a 30+ years old bike.
Someone with a new license should not try to ride an old harley, that's suicide.
PS: I'm only riding harleys but i know that the brakes fucking suck, you need to feel that sort of bike and not just jump on it.
BoxHoaxYTube 1 year ago
@BoxHoaxYTube
Im not quite sure. I'm no Harley expert! But you are on the money. It would've been the poor guy's dream bike or something. Openned it up a little and lost it. Real sad.
wondereyedrive 1 year ago
@wondereyedrive i think only the Flatheads got an 1000cc engine...
BoxHoaxYTube 1 year ago
@tubbybasset I agree. This summer, after 15 years of riding a 600cc (YZF) I wanted to buy a 1000cc bike. But after a test ride I was sure, this wouldn't be a good idea. I was always thinking, this bike is riding me and not the other way round, like it should be. Obviously my skills are not good enough...I prefer a life without a wheel chair. So I bought the Triumph Street Triple.
MrTuffgong11 1 year ago
@MrTuffgong11 haha, The speed triple is a nice sedate bike:) Funnily enough I was actually looking at the new speed triple in a Triumph brochure at my local bike dealer the other day, sweet bike, I think from memory they make a 600 and a 1000? Which one did you get?
tubbybasset 1 year ago
@tubbybasset The Street Triple has 675cc and the Speed Triple 1080cc. I got the Street Triple. The comments on this bike are so fantastic (best naked bike in this class), so I had to buy it and I think it was the right decision.
I can hardly await next bike season :)
MrTuffgong11 1 year ago
@MrTuffgong11 Nice one! I have only ever heard good things about the speed/street triple and they look as tough as hell. The street/speed triple is very high on my list of bikes to check out when I eventually replace the DR650. How long before you can take it out for a serious ride? I take it you must be in the Northern Hemisphere as we here in the Southern Hemisphere can ride all year round, mind you it can get awfully hot in leathers some days even barreling along at a fair pace.
tubbybasset 1 year ago
@tubbybasset Well, in Berlin the Winter lasts normally until April (Russia is not far away). We still had snow at Easter. Don't you have any Winter where you come from ? By the way, my first ride will be literally my first one because at the time when I decided to get this bike, it was November and we had a lot of snow - it was just too late for a testride, but I trust all these positive feedbacks to this bike.
MrTuffgong11 1 year ago
@MrTuffgong11 I am in Sth West Queensland in Australia. We get a winter but not like you guys (I spent some time in Germany in Winter - COLD!). It gets to maybe -2 degrees but never snows. Most winter days the top temp is around 18 - 20 degrees, perfect for riding. You have had a street triple sitting in your garage since November and have not been able to take it for a ride! Man you have my sympathy, that would send me insane. But I think the first ride will be the best ride you have ever had.
tubbybasset 1 year ago
@tubbybasset No, it's still in the Triumph shop. It's already paid but I'm gonna fetch it in April. You are a lucky guy as an Australian. Must be fantastic to live there. Unfortunately it is too far away (from here). So, wish you a happy new year and a bike season without a crash...
MrTuffgong11 1 year ago
@MrTuffgong11 Thanks and a happy New Year to you! Where I live gets quite hot, so some days you either ride without leathers, which I prefer not to do, or you don't ride. We are pretty much the opposite extreme to Germany. I really feel like a ride today (wife is annoying me) but it is 38 degrees and the thought of getting geared up is not very appealing so I doubt I will venture out. You guys have amazing roads too, the quality of your worst roads are superior to many Australian roads.

the r1 has 146hp the fireblade has 148hp the CBR1000RR is the quickest jap liter bike and has the best midrange the 2009-2010model has the best top end then any fireblade before the gsxr1000 is the only bike that has a better top end then the fireblade as far as liter bike and it wieghs the less, the R1 is the heaviest liter bike and personal i think yamaha fucked the r1 up they should sticked with the inline 4 and just work on the r1's low end..

@miguelitohz Where the hell do you get your numbers from? LMAO try about 160 horses.
adrenalineboyzryan 1 year ago 2
@adrenalineboyzryan 198 HP at the crank with Ram Air, around 170 at the rear wheel.
Stuntman175 1 year ago
@Stuntman175 Well the crank and to the wheels are way different. Also ram air makes no difference unless you are moving so ram air would not effect the numbers from a dyno run. I was talking about power to the wheels, you know the REAL power your bike shows when you are riding it. Crank numbers are useless because it does not show true power, the wheel power is what you go by.
