Gerbils do not float half-asleep when trapped; when trapped or stressed gerbils are known to go into a Stare or Absence Seizure, and come out of it in a few seconds to a few minutes. But to believe they float on their backs and swim when trapped is rediculous, and if someone is doing this on purpose to stress them out so they can watch them "SWIM ON THEIR BACKS" and go into seizures, that would be animal abuse, and since laws are slack I'd confront the person with a baseball bat; that works.

nonsense- they're great swimmers. they avoid water in the wild because water often draws/contains predators. they get most of the water they require in their (wild) diet. if they are being pursued they will readily swim to attempt escape and if they are hungry they have no problem swimming to seek food. i raised many of them and have had only one that truly loved the water. he was amazing-if he became trapped, he could just float half-asleep till somebody found him and hauled him out.
