Steve has ALS. This is so heartbreaking to hear. My dad also has a fatal disease so hearing about this affects me in a different way. I feel bad for him.
Sad world we live in where a man who made this moment happen, and really kickstarted the Saints (and really New Orleans') resurgence is diagnosed with ALS just a few years later.
Bought my ticket from a Falcons fan for $300. It was an endzone seat and I was a bit disappointed....until we scored that TD in my endzone. After a year of misery, I had never let out all my frustration in a cathartic scream.....that moment I did, and it felt wonderful.
@deejwheresyourpen Steve Gleason blocked the punt in the video above. Chris Reis recovered the onside kick (Ambush) in Super Bowl XLIV against the Colts.
@deejwheresyourpen No...Chris Reis grabbed the onside kick in the Superbowl...they just wore the same jersey number. And both happen to be white guys with long hair. Not the same guy though....WhoDat
@deejwheresyourpen Hi dee that Was Chris Reis that recovered the onside kick and Steve Gleason that blocked the punt against the Falcons. He retired from football in 2008. I was watching the Saints and Houston play yesterday and Gleason was a honorary captain. He now has ALS and can barely walk. Gleason played for the Saints 8 years as a special teams player and back up safety. He was a great player and blocked 4 punts in his career. Bless you Steve Gleason!
I guess a lot people would think "what's so special about a blocked punt in the first quarter of the second game of the season?" It may not mean much to them, but it is certainly memorable for a die-hard Saint fan.
@JohnnyBoyMagic Watching Joe Theismann's leg breaking: Even as a Cowboy fan, it was terribly sad because you knew it was over for one of the NFL's (and CFL's) best.
The Packers starting the final drive in the Ice Bowl: Ya just knew the Cowboys were doomed.
49er's final drive in the NFC Championship vs the Cowboys: Same as above.
The Hamilton Tigercats final drive with time running out in the 2010 CFL East Semi: Kevin Glenn was TOO antsy, ya knew it wouldn't end well...it didn't.
when i watch this, i just feel like every person in that stadium felt that. whether you were a falcons fan o.r a saints fan or a referee of commenter or whatever, i know that every single person felt that moment because it was a whole city that after going through so much pain, started to believe again.
Couldn't have said it better myself zero byte, most of my baby pics are in saints stuff. To be the next big saints is my passion and that play was a great moment in my life
okay watch this Okay the guy that recovered the fumble in the endzone Deloach was wearing number 39 right so fast forward to Super Bowl 44 Start iof the second half with an onside side That guy too was wearing number 39 Resis or something like that...
that year we lost to the bears in the nfc championship. haha this year bears got 7-9 and saints won the superbowl!!!and the bears LOST!!!!in yo face bears.
@Pikamooch1 : That was the 4th play of the first game back in the Superdome after Katrina. (Saints played all road games in 2005). The game was nationally televised, and was then the most-watched cable program in history (The Saints SB win is now the most watched program in history, sports or otherwise). This single play represents the birth cry of the revitalized Saints to all of us Who Dats. To top it all off, the Falcons are our most hated rival.
I find this rather ironic. In the first game of the Saint's first season, the first thing they got was a kickoff return for a TD. First game back in the Superdome they get a blocked punt for a TD. Funny how special teams work that way.
Great post, I have this game on DVD, this was the moment the Saints started their march to the Superbowl. I had the privilege of being in Miami for the Superbowl this year, and I witnessed the end result of a very long journey. I will remember it always...Go Saints...this champinships is for all the small market teams that never had a hope in hell, this is for all the underdogs that never stood a chance. This is for all the teams that don't have a billion dollars to spend on players.
TOTALLY AWESOME! Thanks for posting! I honestly believe that night was when the Saints and their fans realized something special was happening. Four years later, we are where we've never been before. Again, thanks for posting this memorable moment! AWESOME!.
That night was SO INCREDIBLE. I think it was the first time that both the New Orleans Saints and their fans realized something special was beginning to happen. Four years later, look at us now! Thanks for posting a very memorable moment. WHO DAT!
@jmemleb08 together in top 3 I think the Tracy Porter interception was the best in Saints history and the Garrett Hartley OT FG vs the Vikings were the best
One more thing, your argument can't hold a candle to the following facts: largest superbowl ratings, 800,000 attended the Saints parade, more saints fans in the stadium than Colts fans AND we're more fun.
@bigawp Not to mention we're the only fans to sell out an entire stadium for 30+ years in a row. Saints fans are the most loyal in the Nation, bar none.
As the admin of this video I decided to let your comment stay just to watch the Who Dat nation rip you a new ( rated G as usual). All teams have there bad calls go for them and against them. That is simply the way football is.
The Saints beat the Colts fairly. Your Vikings were not good enough to overcome a single bad call and we beat them to. Its undeniable that most of the country was for us. Don't ruin sports by being a poor sport. Take your loss like a man & we'll see ya next year.
Actually the entire country knows that they the Saints backed in because of poor officiating. Biggest fraud in Superbowl history. Not much to hang your hat on. Still the Aints as in Aint Legitimate. Guess you'll take it however you can but don't expect the rest of the country to be happy for a team that couldn't win on their own merit.
the saints won because they didn't throw a int, like Payton manning who suppose to be so much better than drew brees ... the saints is the best team this year hands down....Damn colts fan still cryin cause yall got beat down
Lol? Most of the country is happy for the Saints, just a few bitter Vikings/Colts fans aren't. Stop trying to thing you speak for the rest of the nation. Yes there were bad calls, but that's football, and trust me as a Saints fan I'm sure I know alot more about bad calls then you do. So move along. Who Dat!
@Kiljae8n Wow bitter Vikings and Colts fans? More like fans who support there team. Usually when your team is in the superbowl and loses, you probably wont feel like its perfectly fine that the other team should have won.
i guess peyton just "intended" to throw that pic 6 to give the saints the victory right, and be known as the guy who royally fucked up and gave the saints their first super bowl victory, really???? are you that retarded
because that "flower" is more than just a flower here, its a symbol... and who dat measns who that... around here we dont say th we just say who "d"at... hope that helps a llil bit...
vvvv Seriously?? That is the fleur de lis, an old French emblem that goes back to the age of exploration, maybe before. The French settled in Louisiana (named after King Louis, forgot which one), so the lily represents the French heritage and tradition that so evidently resides in New Orleans. Geaux Saints!
King Louis XIV. And his mother (and regant while he was a child) is named Anne in french, but was baptised Ana. (Louis I Ana). The fleur de lis is the family crest for the House of Bourbon, which King Louis was apart of.
Who Dat is just a chant for the team. Who dat say dey gonna beat dem saints. And the "flower" is the fleur de lis, which was a symbol for French Monarchy. Although New Orleans mostly has a Spanish influence, the saints chose this as their logo because of the French influence in New Orleans.
I was sitting at Trophy's Cabaret on Bourbon Street with 2 of my best friends. I've been to New Orleans dozens of times, but this was my most memorable trip. When the Saints blocked that punt, I thought my head was gonna explode!! Very emotional...I will never forget it.
I was at a sports bar in Canada wearing my Deuce jersey and went absolutely bananas....tears rolled down my face....this was bigger than the Super Bowl we're about to play in.
I was sitting in Hooters in Metarie with my buddies, Listining to the game on WWL with my Headphones. The TV Broadcast was about 7 Secs behind Jim Hendersons Broadcast. When Gleason Blocked the Punt. I JUMPED OUT of my Seat and the rest of the Restaurant Thought I was nuts but 7 Seconds after that they were all GOING CRAZY.
It's a shame tho, no matter wich Team wins, Colts or the Saints, this Superbowl will be quickly forgotten because of the fact that the media will be soo worried what Brett Favre is gonna do. 1 player is getting talked about more than the Superbowl? Pshh.
I came from North Dakota with my teenage son to witness this event from the first row of the 30 yard line. Our view was perfect, unobstructed. I was watching so intensely that every step seemed in slow motion. From my angle it appeared as if the entire team was pouring through. It was dramatic, electifying. For all of you fans of other teams posting comments about your own emotions watching this play and game, thank you. It really means a lot to all of us. Bless you guys.
I'm a lifelong Steelers fan but I think the Saints are gonna win Super Bowl 44 this year........THEY LOOK FUCKING HUNGRY and UNSTOPPABLE and that's what it takes to win it all........I actually feel sorry for the Vikings and whichever AFC team the Saints play in the big game.........it's gonna be a bloodbath.
To this day that still brings tears to my eyes...even the look on atlanta coach Jim Mora is classic.....I will never forget that night...WHO DAT! WHO DAT! WHO DAT SAY DEY GONA BEAT DEM SAINTS!!! 504=BLACK & GEAUXLD
if you're not from nola and you can't grasp the gravity of what happened to our city by now, then you never will understand and you'll never understand the "signifigance" of that play or that game!
Tqdvorak, because it was the first game played in the Superdome since hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Saints forced the falcons to a 3-and-out followed by this blocked punt. It meant the world to Saints fans at the time.
@tqdvorak it was their first game back in the dome after a year of playing at a stadium in texas. it was a really inspirational moment for the whole city who was still struggling from the effects of the hurricane
it was the first game played in that dome since katrina....The place was booming after U2/greenday's performance. The heart of an entire city was in that stadium and for something like that to happen on the teams first drive was memorable.....I remember watching it on tv, it gives me chills watching it and I'm a pats fan
because it was the first big play in the superdome since katrina and it inspiried the fans and teams, in any other game it would be nothing special but since it was the first game back it was inportant to them
@tqdvorak ,, it gave the city of New Orleans something to cheer about in the first home game after Katrina, and I think it was early in the first quarter. pretty cool moment.
This was the most significant, memorable and important play in the history of the Saints. No moment, not even a Super Bowl victory will top this moment for me....it had me in tears.
What a moment...well captured. I remember watching this with my wife. We high fived each other, she was crying, and we are not even Saints fans. Great moment for the city.
unbelieveable. i was there and will never forget this. the loudest i think ive ever heard the thunderdome....peeled the paint off the walls. peytons reaction is priceless..still makes the hairs stand up!! saints baby..believe it!
bigawp----thanks for this, i will never forget this game-----electrifying. i was there, grown men were tearing up--myseld included. that play ---saints fans will never forget. gleason will be able to tell/show his grandkids that one!! go saints baby. 9-0 and we are unstoppable.....see ya in miami.
Awesome moment and awesome music to go with it! This is why I love living in Louisiana and proud to be a Saints fan. Anyone can tell me the name of the music?

I came from North Dakota with my teenage son to witness this event from the first row of the 30 yard line. Our view was perfect, unobstructed. I was watching so intensely that every step seemed in slow motion. From my angle it appeared as if the entire team was pouring through. It was dramatic, electifying. For all of you fans of other teams posting comments about your own emotions watching this play and game, thank you. It really means a lot to all of us. Bless you guys.

I'm a lifelong Steelers fan but I think the Saints are gonna win Super Bowl 44 this year........THEY LOOK FUCKING HUNGRY and UNSTOPPABLE and that's what it takes to win it all........I actually feel sorry for the Vikings and whichever AFC team the Saints play in the big game.........it's gonna be a bloodbath.

if you're not from nola and you can't grasp the gravity of what happened to our city by now, then you never will understand and you'll never understand the "signifigance" of that play or that game!
tboaca 2 years ago
Tqdvorak, because it was the first game played in the Superdome since hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Saints forced the falcons to a 3-and-out followed by this blocked punt. It meant the world to Saints fans at the time.
krob8788 2 years ago
hey folks disagree all you want, but dont make it personal. That wont be posted
bigawp 2 years ago
what is the signifigance of this play? its not like it was game deciding. why is it so special?
tqdvorak 2 years ago
@tqdvorak it was their first game back in the dome after a year of playing at a stadium in texas. it was a really inspirational moment for the whole city who was still struggling from the effects of the hurricane
theblackandgold92 2 years ago
it was the first game played in that dome since katrina....The place was booming after U2/greenday's performance. The heart of an entire city was in that stadium and for something like that to happen on the teams first drive was memorable.....I remember watching it on tv, it gives me chills watching it and I'm a pats fan
rlugo72 2 years ago
because it was the first big play in the superdome since katrina and it inspiried the fans and teams, in any other game it would be nothing special but since it was the first game back it was inportant to them
magi1029384756 2 years ago
It was the first TD in the re-opened Superdome.

@tqdvorak ,, it gave the city of New Orleans something to cheer about in the first home game after Katrina, and I think it was early in the first quarter. pretty cool moment.

@tqdvorak
This was the most significant, memorable and important play in the history of the Saints. No moment, not even a Super Bowl victory will top this moment for me....it had me in tears.
lsuwins59 2 years ago
@tqdvorak... It shows that Our Saints have a 3-dimensional game, as evidenced by the game-sealing touchdown by Reggie on the Punt return.

What a moment...well captured. I remember watching this with my wife. We high fived each other, she was crying, and we are not even Saints fans. Great moment for the city.
