  • And of course his vocal range isn't going to be as good as he was younger....anyone who expects that age and extensive strain on your vocals from numerous live tours won't hurt your vocal cords in the long run are complete idiots. He is still very good...Tool, A Perfect Circle and Pusificer are all good as well. The songs and music has changed to suit his vocals better over the years so he still sounds nearly perfect...I'm glad he isn't screaming and yelling still because he IS older now.

  • For those people who say Maynard is flat in the song...it was made for him to be flat. Listen to the studio recording :/

  • so beautiful!

guitar is melting my ass away

  • I cry with the original song as it is....if it had this solo in the original song then i'd be all out of tears!

  • OH SHIT NIGGER !! RECORD A STUDIO VERSION OF THIS SOLO !!

  • wanna new album from apc

  • increible!

  • maynard really sounds like hes feeling this song, such a sad song if you know what its about......its about his mum......."Gotta cut away, clear away

    Snip away and sever this

    Umbilical residue,

    Keeping me from killing you"

his mum was on life support with the brain anuerysm and he had to pull the plug, he didnt want to but she wanted out, very sad.

  • I'd hate to be one of the 2 poor bastards that hates there life...

  • Awesome! :)

  • I hope this has inspired you all to read the story of Orestes-basically the Greek Hamlet-i HAVE to believe ol William S. borrowed the plot.

  • Comment removed

  • I have NEVER been attracted to a bald guy, but I would have Billy's guitar shredding babies...

  • @HootyInWonderLand hahaha what about Billy Corgan? Hahaha

  • @HootyInWonderLand Rofl, I think that one's pushin it

  • If I die I would like this song to be played at my funeral!!!

  • @lologood84 you will die. Trust me on this.

  • Oh man, that song, that voice. I am so glad I got to see them live twice!

  • increible!!!excelente

  • The most beautiful song ever made.

  • this is my favorite apc song

  • I would love to go to an APC concert but I still think TOOL's are alot better just cuz of the screens visual effects and lights

  • saw these guys at the TLA in philly a few years ago......ive been to many concerts and many venues.....this was top 5.....billy howerdell is a god, he is the music

  • best band ever..........seen them in concert and it is one concert i'll never forget

  • Yup. I saw them on their last (and final, I believe) U.S. tour in 2004. Bought tix at the box office an hour before the show started and they were almost right next to the stage at the perfect angle, 5 rows up from the floor. I'll never forget this show for a number of reasons, one being they played this version of Orestes. The only stupid part was the idiots moshing during 3 Libras, then a fight breaking out...one of the reasons why I don't like floor tix.

  • omg! i love a perfect circle. they will always be my favorite band next to pantera.

  • @sdiaz82 YES ! YES YES YES!

  • great song!!!

    i really love it!!

hands down to a perfect circle!!!

  • you need to hear the rest of the show, sometimes it's just a song here and there. not the whole show.

  • gutted he is a tiny bit flat. i'd still kill to sing like him on his worst day though

  • Don't think your spamming, i agree with you about the guitar a few times, and a bit about the whole band. But even with that, the song, and that performance is awesome.

  • I liked first lineup of APC better, with paz and troy, but maybe i'm kinda sentimental.... I mean , on 13 th step they had james iha.

  • paz is great. She did the strings on Mer De Noms i think, so I love her.

  • the bassist for APC is Jeordie White, aka 'Twiggy', from Marlyn Manson

  • meynard's voice cracked at 2:22 but still a great great great great great great song!!! if i tried to sing this song my voice wouldve cracked the whole time..LOL

  • this is NOT good sound quality...

  • Oh! Nice!

I would love to see that song live with this kind of extended solo.

    My favorite!

Fingercrossed for a new A Perfect Circle

  • breathtaking

  • *sniff*

Can't wait to hear their new tracks!

    Still my favorite band.

  • apc?

  • APC are split...

  • HAHA DORK

  • Looks like Iha is playing the same guitar as Adam Jones (Tool)

  • Yea, I was thinkin the same. Good eye ;)

  • Hes Adam Jones' Guitar technitian so obviously he would be used to that guitar.

  • Actually, Billy Howerdel was Adam Jones' guitar tech. James Iha is originally from the Smashing Pumpkins, for whom Billy was also a guitar tech at one point. Billy's guitar of choice is the Gibson Les Paul, he could have picked it up off of Adam and then James picked it up from Billy(who knows?), but yes, Adam's guitar of choice is also the Les Paul.

  • i beleive its a series of mid 90's silverbursts that got recalled because of the metal content in the paint, but adam gets a unique tone because of it

  • i think adams gat is a bit older than that and thus the amazing tone

  • no he runs through 3 amps at the same time to get his one of a kind tone

  • their best song!

  • that extended solo was sick

hope apc gets back together soon and paz and troy come back as well

  • Don't get me wrong guys, i love tool and APC, but Maynard's vocals live are not that good! In the first couple albums watching them live was unreal and up to par, but as time goes on and the more mainstream he's becoming, the more he uses effects and doesn't hit the notes he should for the price people pay to see them! the band must be on at all times yet the vocals suffer?!? doesn't cut it!

  • surely you can find other reasons to listen to maynard even if you dont like his voice

  • Live shows that is! and just in the last couple years! His voice is awesome no doubt! Just was disappointed for a minute but i'm over it now! your right, thanks for the comment!

  • in regards to your comments, i agree and disagree. I saw them 4 times during the 10,000 days tour here in vegas (and seeing him this weekend with pucifer). His vocals at times are ouf of key BUT the last show here in vegas was AWSOME, uncompromised on all fronts. the man was above the rest of us and his band. it was increadible.

  • let me know how the puscifer show is, should be fun

  • never out of key, just a little flat sometimes. It happens with tiredness and vocal strain

  • Ah yes, I misworded my comment. thanks fo the correction. M.K. pushes his voice to the limit, strain is inevidible. If only other singers would push themselves the same.

  • fuck dude, howerdel is so melodic.. his vocal harmonies are also amazing.. although, he can't top maynard

  • wow, incredible voice.

  • Maynard is such an icon, as short as he is, he is a very imponent and strong personality on stage.

To me, this is the best song he wrote, just love it.

  • All songs on Mer De Nom wrote Billy, but yeah, this is their best song.

  • nah, Howerdel made the music, those are clearly Maynard lyrics.

  • one of their best....'thomas', 'brena', 'judith', and 'passive' are some others.

  • ahahaah

    short lmao, he's still sexy

  • Yes, awesome song.

  • I love this song!

  • the extended version sounds pretty awesome. sick harmonies

  • what a great solo!

  • Starts a bit slowly but once it gets into it, its one of apc best song (imo)

  • Agreed, I jsut started getting into this song. Very powerful, yet fluid lyrics.

  • Edit: i think that was an epiphone actually

  • james has a silverburst like adams?

  • I just like their guitar solo in 3:21 to 4:34

  • got no words to describe when i hear this song!!! fuckin stunning!!

  • one of the best songs in the world! absolutely amazing.

  • @Sarcasticsammmy agreed. One of the best song in the world. I've listened to this one song, countless times. In fact everyone I know would be sick of this song if they knew how much I spammed it.

  • This is my favorite live version of "Orestes"

    It's amazing

  • Parabola and 46 and 2 have hard vocal parts. As well as almost every Tool song. The earlier Tool stuff was the most vocally demanding because of the many screams that just destroy your vocal chords. "The Grudge" on Lateralus has like a 24 second scream or something.

  • I disagree somewhat. the vocals on Jambi and the pot are very difficult. Maynard really pushed himself on that album. Hes very flat on lateralus in comparison, which isn't saying much since maynard is always awesome

  • Oh I definitely agree that"The Pot"is ridiculously difficult to sing. But sometimes what sounds the best isnt the hardest.I judge them by the live performances though. I think that Maynard has gotten worse on most songs as the years go by, not to say he isn't still my favorite vocalist though.I don't know,I'm not a vocal expert or anything, but I am impressed the most when he goes high in chest voice.I've never really heard him use falsetto/head voice except in the package and stinkfist(recorded)

  • ur absolutely right. thats what sets maynard apart from others is that his chest voice has such an insane range. i can sing in the pot's range, chest voice 4 about 20 seconds before my voice goes. and yeah, its a shame that the voice goes with time. im really hoping he pulls something out of his ass 4 the next record. still, it must take such a toll on the road

  • Ha I don't think I even can sing in that range at all. Yeah, I hope he does good on the next album but I'm sure he will. In stinkfist, maynard doesn't even try for those high notes anymore ("When I can't really feel a thing at all" I think), but when he used to he would always do them in chest voice even though the recording was in falsetto! That always amazed me. Why wouldn't he just use falsetto? Especially now, instead of just singing them low like he does. Maynard is so awesome.

  • yeah the recording is definitely falsetto and ur right, its wierd that he wouldnt do that during a live show especially since he uses a megaphone 4 that part anyways. but hey, thats what seeing a band live is all about. and for the record, stinkfist extended is fantastic, and so are mayanards choice of notes (once again). I still have to say, Jambi might be my fav in the maynard realm, and tool altogether. If you really listen to the song, its not that heavy, its a really beautiful song. top 3

  • Ah, yes, Jambi is a beautiful song!

I agree with everything else though...

He's getting older and his voice can't handle as much anymore :( But he still pulls on like a champ!

I have no real favorite Tool song, due to the beauty in all of their songs!

And as far as the most complicated to sing...I'd have to say it goes with The Pot, Parabola, and Reflection with the constant crescendo/descrescendo...that's my opinion XD

  • agreed. but throw ticks and leeches in there too haha

  • Yeah, I was thinking about that one too!

You had completely read my mind!

  • Ha I completely forgot about Ticks and Leeches until recently. Did they ever do that live without a phaser on Maynard's voice?

  • nah, they've only played that song a handful of times cuz its destroys maynards voice. no effects on that song my man, all him. I got to see them perform it at MSG during lateralus tour and it was my favorite song at the time. Unfortunately I had just started getting into tool so I didnt really comprehend

  • accidentally posted that...just started on tool and rock music in general so I didnt really comprehend just how remarkable it was. but hey, I was SUPER high so it was still incredible haha

  • yeah i saw tool on that tour too and really didnt realize the priveledge that it was..i just went because i got free tickets and didnt really knwo about tools greatness.. and i had a ticket to the 10000 days tour in madison and i found out it was cancelled that fuckin morning.. imagine the heartbreak

  • wow thats terrible. I saw them 3 times this past tour and I thought, aside from the somewhat distilled set list, it was much better than their lateralus tour. if only i had know about them during the aenima days ...no quarter...

  • no,never.

  • Think about the earlier stuff like JERK OFF and especially hooker with a penis. Im no singer, but hooker with a penis is god damn intense.

  • opiate is a super intense and angry album. just a great "fuck everything" attitude that we havent really seen since pantera. musically, however, it doesnt compare to the later stuff, of course

  • we get it we get it you guys like the HEAVIER stuff better. gee

  • thats by far the best ive heard them play that. maynard was a little flat but choice of notes were awesome. billy's solo was great too. awesome post

  • awesome but maynard is flat throughout.

  • this song just has so much raw emotion in it during the last vocal segment..gives me goosebumps XD

  • I adore Maynard...and the song too...The best song ever... ;))

  • Maynard has a really weird presence on the stage- kinda like he's about to do something crazy...then he doesn't. Oh well. My favorite APC song BY FAR.

  • I like how the comments on many APC/Tool videos are actually coherent. It's a step above the rest of YouTube. I think it says something about the fans.

  • holy sh!+ thats what it's all about, who gives a crap if it doesn't sound just like the record on the guitar solo at least you know the audience got what they paid for.

  • simplemente Exelente

  • this song would be so hard to perform live and how perfect

  • just an humble opinion. of all tool/apv songs i think this is the most difficult vocally 2 pull off because of the high range at the end. He pulls it off nicely, without kissin his ass. just impressive. the pot maybe is a close second

  • pushit, schism ans ticks and leeches would be hardest imo

  • yeah i agree with Orestes and The Pot being among Maynards more impressive vocal performances. His high end astonishes me sometimes... kinda makes me wanna steal his vocal chords.

That solo was great btw. Execellent arc to it... maybe wasnt executed *just* right, but it can be difficult to do something live the same way it sounds in you're personal practice space. Still proof that Billy definitely has that special touch when it comes to composition.

  • Actually... His part in the Deftones' - Passenger is by far one of the hardest to sing.

  • Hmmm, ill have to give that another listen. Haven't heard it in while.

  • didnt passenger become passive?or am i thinking of the completely wrong thing

  • passenger is the deftones and tool collaberation. passive is the constantine song.

  • Like cheaptrades said, Passenger features Maynard on guest vocals but is a Deftones song. You are thinking of "Vacant". It became "Passive".

  • yeah, side note on that. I read an article with the singer from deftones regarding passenger, and he was trying to explain how Tool writes their songs. the only thing he could actually communicate is that they have a huge board and its sort of like some insanely decedent puzzle. then he proceeded to say that he didnt think it would be a good idea to discuss the topic any further, ha. I always thought that was pretty cool

  • That's because Tool doesn't write their music normally, they write it the same way Mozart did.

    o.O

    Yuuus.

  • How do you know this?

  • You do know how Mozart wrote right? One copy, one go, no mistakes, just perfection? Well, if you didn't now you do. And I was being sarcastic.

  • that would be a description of recording music, not writing it...WRITING music deals with the STRUCTURE of a song

  • oh yeah! thanks

  • Sorry drumgawd, passenger isnt even nearly as difficult as Hush when it comes to hi end vocals but i would agree as its sang in a minor key, to stay in tune would be difficult. But Maynard has several key chabges and prelude songs that he does that in that he's pretty accustom to it.

  • I don't know, the rambling of Rosetta Stoned is so fucking hard to keep up to.

  • maynard is a genius. and it doesn't matter what any of you think... because i guarantee he's getting more ass than all of you combined.

  • Is that Adam Jones at 2:45?

  • Nope, It`s James Iha

  • the extended solo bit was a bit weak. good song otherwise, the drummer is awesome

  • First this is SO WEAK. I got a fucking email from this fucking nerd talking bout "what I do/don't know shit about" but then you back it up with that weak ass im so fucking smart bullshit go fuck yourself

  • lol you must have not been the sharpest tool in the shed in your family. 1st off, unlike you i payed attention in school. Your use of vocabulary just shows how ignorant you are. oh and by the way, being manager at burger king and picking up fat chicks there doesn't make you cool. Trash like you either end up in the army because you're too dumb to do anything else productive in society. You're everything that America should be flushed down a toilet

  • Lol, you should be talking about grammar smart guy.

  • you fucking nerd I got drunk and left a random rhetorical comment about my opinion of a fucking song and you say im wrong fuck you. I'M RIGHT.You know why?.... huh you fucking scholar.... because it's my fucking opinion.

I'm too busy making money and fucking random girls to give a fuck about researching that weak ass shit.

  • Move out of your moms house and go fuck something other than your hand.

    You Fucking Nerd

  • haha, you can't be serious by calling me a "nerd". Lets see, you've posted 3 times about a subject that isn't really a big deal but hey im the nerd who points out the truth, unlike you who sits on youtube all day and acting tough over the internet. it's kidna sad that you take that much consideration from someone over the internet. In my opinion, open a book for once and learn something and become something useful in this world.

  • Oh, and if your looking for a depressing ass song by A.P.C. then Sleeping Beauty is it.

  • dude, this song is about him joining perfect circle and forgetting about the stagnant complacency of his original band. Love tool too bla bla bla but at the time that perfect cir. came out tool was pretty much just going through the motions. It's like when you're dating somebody for a few years and things are bla. Then you grab yourself some strange (aka side ass) and BANG life love and past relationships are rejuvenated. In closing A Perfect Circle is Maynard's strange/side ass.

    Don't doubt it.

  • You sir don't read history and don't know shit about translating songs. Orestes is the son of Agamemnon in Greek Mythology. The main dillema Orestes has in the myth is whether it is okay for someone to kill his mother to avenge his father.

  • damn Switch tell him good man

  • Josh Freese is the man!

  • Billy is so much better than James! He shuould have played in Smashing Pumpkins, too...:-D (just kiddin'...maybe)

  • it's about maynard's dad i think.

  • maynard never wrote it, billy howerdel did

  • Freakin love 4:32.

  • Unbelievable song.

  • I really am impressed by this version. Even though Billy has done this solo at other shows, this particular one carries a lot of weight. Props to them.

  • My favorite song on Mer de Nom. this is a great live version.

  • solo left me speechless.

  • the solo brought a lil tear to my eye.

this tune resonates so well with me.

  • i seen APC a few years back and got hit with some of billy howerdels water!

  • sigh..

  • APC is so good. So stoked for ASHES dIVIDE Tuesday. Two days!

  • yeah i heard a song by ashes divide. its freakin awesome

  • oooooooooooo pero k pinche verga

  • That long solo is AWESOME!!

  • oh god that looks awesome i would have loved to be there.

  • i was there =D And it WAS freaking awesome, i about lost my damn mind lol. Best show EVER

  • I hate you :(

  • LOOOOVE watching Billy make love to his guitar during the solo. I think MJK might be getting off on it too (check out 3:20)!

  • Billy was simply awesome on the solo, can also hear a good one, when you can almost place lyrics during the solo, genius. Mjk is equally awesome, great lyricist(<--spelling check?)

  • Heck yea i love that added solo...wish i could find the tabs somewhere.

  • esa guitarra te hace agarrarte la poronga

  • Hahahahahahaa!! La porronga.... Hahaahahahaha!

  • Love love love Billy on the guitar giving that extra solo. That man is a genius, hands down...

  • Eargasm

  • could not have said it better!

  • thats why mjk is such a fantastic vocalist, he puts everything into his performance, so much so that in this vid his vioce breaks yet he stretches it further to finish the song, brilliance

  • Great quality! :)

I think Maynard's voice breaks at 2.21, so he's really putting everything into this song and right into it. :) :(

  • Thanx APC for the very great song ever.

  • Great performance. I saw them 4 times. I love APC.

  • From 3.45 to 4.04 is sweet.

  • I really, really, really want to see them in concert again. They were just SO good.

  • I love that solo I can play the original stuff but not that. He added a nice touch to that song. Cheers.

  • this video just shows how great billy truly is as a writer and guitarist can't wait for his solo project to finish up

  • this version is better than original (for me)

    APC forever!

  • hey!!!!! hershey i was there! good times......SHIT FUCK!

  • news flash. maynard wrote the frigin lyrics

  • i remember this. such a great concert. josh freese broke like 42 sticks in that concert

  • Breathtakingly beautiful. I really love this version. I wish APC had release a live DVD, or at least a live CD. :(
