  • He's Smearing those block soooo much. When you cut the mortar off, hold the trowel at more of an angle.

  • Very helpful

  • This guy is a rookie. He hasn't been doing this for long.

  • @primate4 Exactly...even less then a rookie! Just shows you ANYONE can do it with the use of the Spacers

  • @paramo81 Because joint spacers are faster and easier.. :S

  • @paramo81 Basically the Spacers are used to keep the minimum 3/8' joint.

  • likj

  • cool

  • Great idea with the spacers. Would it be possible to place 2 3/8" rebar horizontally as spacers using your same concept with extra thick mortar. The rebar will also add strentgh to the wall once the cells are filled with grout.

  • Make sure you "butter" extra thick to insure a positive connection between joints as the spacers will only allow so much play. you want to compress mortar.

  • you could also use ballbearings for spacers. But we usually mix the mortar the same and have no problems. I've even put up block walls by running the walls without building up the corners. But you have to know what you are doing.

  • @tubeyou9878 Wouldn't using Ballbearings get a little expensive?

  • @tubeyou9878 Spacers span across and underneath two corresponding blocks enabling both to be the same level.

  • what are the spacers for?? im using the same type of bricks to make concrete steps

  • @kfc63822 Spacers are use to keep a nice uniform 3/8 inch Mortar Joint Spacing between Blocks and Bricks. Keeps the weight of the blocks from "crushing" the joints.

  • Been a mason for 23 years and there are some jobs that require joint spacing due to the architectural layout. As good as a mason is, and there are plenty, these architects creat such layouts that have a 1/4" tolerance that require spacers.. But I can tell you this, I love masonry and I love watching it being done. Keep shooting videos.

  • and what happens if you have to grind or bump up a course?

  • @foster872006 Simple...don't use the Spacer.

  • These spacers and a little time gives professional results by a DIY'er, the pro masons will always leave negative comments about spacers because it's putting them out of a job. It was exactly the same when the Bricky came out, pros would not like it becasue it gave homeowners the chance to build walls that look and feels professional.

  • I've never seen concrete brick like this before. European block are not like that.

  • @SebNormandy Welcome to America xD

  • @SebNormandy i know. im a bricky from ireland and moved to australia, had to learn a totally new technique. the guy in this vid is no bricky though

  • @MrShaneomac1982 Exactly...Says so right in the Video. These Spacers enable the DIY'er, Handyman and Homeowner to lay Block and Brick as good as a PRO.

  • joint spacers never seen those before

  • i always tap my trowl on my mortor boad before i butter the block so it sticks to the trowl and all your muck dusnt fall everywere

  • @starshock01 just a demo on how Spacers can help a Do-it-yourselfer, Handyman and Homeowner lay Block.

  • Shouldn't the cinder blocks be slightly wet for this?

  • @viper8red nope...the mortar holds fine

  • @viper8red

no thats the worst thing is laying wet blocks. they weigh more and slip around. im a bricklayer.

  • you have the potential to pick up masonry keep working on your technique on spreading the mortar, and if you dont wanna get as dirty get a ''s'' jointer and a sled runner thy come in handy

  • kool idear ill have to make a video on block laying to i have done most of my block work but still have a little to go ill make a vid. and a vid on how to make foottings kool

  • here's what i say about blocklaying it sux hate the job but i like your idear smart thinking. i think a couple of mates at my work could use some of those's lol

  • nice instructional video. but work on your trowel control

  • wont have any fingerprints if he keeps that up. Try a hose piece

  • Those are great. I did about 15 blocks on my side wall without these. It turned out great but it took me a good 30 min per block average including mixing & everything. This was my first time and these would have saved a great deal of time. I decided against doing my back wall because of how slow I am. I would rather do it slow & correct than fast & sloppy. With these I could do it faster and still do a good job. Great product but you are going to get me in over my head again.

  • Just out of curiosity... were you intending to build something? Or just for demonstration?

  • @hill0larry0us The video is just a Demo on how the Spacers are used. Thanks

  • im a mason and ive never seen these spacers but i think its a good idea for the amatures masonry is a very skilled profession and its more that just 1 on top of two a mason is someone who can lay brick block stone glass block flat work fireplaces and chimneys dry laid stone walls and doing the job right fast and with pride blockslayer111

  • @crazychic200923 Yeah, people doing masonary for a living will usually do the best job. A weekend warrior who is sharp may be able to do a good job, but the pro will do an even better job in half the time.

  • @tickyul obviously...

  • Block layings is a hard strenous job if there are a lot of block to lay, so most people pay to have it done...thanks for the video..Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone...the way, the truth, and the life

  • @ShannCole888

Jesus was a Carpenter/Handyman...Probably would have liked these.

  • @ShannCole888 best comment i read in a long time

  • this kinda trick is all well and good but if you were on a price you would earn nothing pissing around with those spacers , just fuckin bang em down level it up bish bash bosh loads a money.

  • @jimikestell1

Not every job's a race to make money. There's also a thing called having pride in your work.

  • where you get those spacers?

  • @fckthaduzzels

You can buy them direct off the website.

  • make sure your first course or your footer is level before using spacers. So always bring a level just incase

  • @yoyingle

    Absolutely

  • @yoyingle gotta bring a level anyway mate, sure the spacers will keep your your bedds level but you still gotta keep your wall plumb

  • give the man a break, he is sharing what he knows.all you pros if you got a better vid post it. i build me an outdoor brick oven and i watched almost all videos youtube. every one of them was interesting and although not perfect, the ideas were educational.

  • Nice video

    What about the pointing?

It s not good practice to use the fingers to do it .

  • @slovpol

True...since it was such a small amount to point he got away with it.

  • What the purpose they use the spacer, this the standard practice for lying block...?

  • @MrTonyshit80

They're used basicallly to "help" the Do-it-yourselfer and Handyman get a more professional and foolproof result.

Pro's are also using them to help in the corner layout.

  • Personally, i would never use those spacers. Never have, never will. Good Video for the DIY'er tho

  • The person is simply a Handyman/Carpenter not a Professional Mason. This demonstration shows how by using these Spacer's a Handyman, Homeowner or Do-it-yourselfer can tackle a small masonary project and get good results.

  • what about the variation in the units themselves? How do you make up for this??

  • If you're using an assortment of old blocks or blocks from different suppliers for the same job you'll need to possibly shim here and there.

  • How often do you check to make sure your wall isn't leaning either way?

  • You check for plumb as often as you would in standard Block Laying.

  • wont the mortar shrink leaving the block high and dry siting on top the spacer?

  • No...Mortar doesn't shrink. You do want to make sure you put enough on to get a good Bond though.

  • @webwillie1 yea the tighter the bed joint the stronger the wall will be

  • I am glad to see a quality video on this topic. If you mortar blocks, then this will give good results.

  • I was in a bit of a bind a couple of weeks ago, and if it wasn't for finding your product I don't think I would have had the guts to attempt doing the blockwork myself. Job turned out GREAT!
