I think I read it on songmeanings(dot)net. Several people confirmed they had heard similar on there. So, I haven't heard it directly in an interview. I think the lyrics match this possible meaning well, though. Take it for what it's worth. No matter the reason for rift, it's still sad to see sibling relationships wither.

this song is even MORE beautiful when your at your 9th concert of hers youve been to and your inches away from her and her guitar and she looks you right in the eyes at one part of the song then after the concert you get to meet her and take a picture with her and she will sign an autograph and you buy 3 t shirts and a sweatshirt that say brandi carlile on them, yeah. thats me. haha i love bragging! :P

yeah...she told us in SLC during the 2nd night...."The Story night" that this was one song out of 3 that she wrote about her brother. All 3 songs in a row on the album. I didn't know that.....so good to know....an amazing experience with her in SLC this week!

@lidlor The thing about her videos is that she may have written it thinking of her brother but the video and song itself leave it up to interpretation. For the listener she could be singing about her boyfriend, brother, old school friend or whatever you want her to be singing about. Her video leaves it ambiguous and that why its so good.

An artist never writes a song for his or herself. This song may have started because of her brother, but the implications of writing lyrics like these extend far beyond that.
That's the beauty of good songwriting, it can apply to so many situations and help so many people. The words mean the world in that they're able to say what millions of people cannot.
