Koolaid is a wonderful teacher. I play all your videos throughout the day to entertain my blue boy Pippen, and he has picked up almost all the vocabulary! This is his favorite video. When I play it in my iphone when he's on my lap, he actually tries to greet Koolaid through it! lol.
@angelhuman97 hm depends onn the individual bird...some wont' talk at all. Males are more inclined to talk. And if they're very vocal. Koolaid started at 8 weeks. Some at a few months.
What a little doll! So loquacious, too! My male says "Beby, baby, baby,", and picked up the whistling game from my Timneh. We're working on 'Mommy's baby now," and "Hello."
My little p'let Butters LOVES listening to Koolaid videos! Some of his vocab actually comes from listening to the videos. So i have to give credit where it's due! Butters is only 4 months old but he peeps up a storm of "peekaboo" and "scratchie scratchie" in the morning all thanks to Mr. Koolaid. When I set up my laptop, Butters will book it down my arm, hop on the keyboard and demand peep that I play him some parrotlet videos.
OMG! I had these little guys for years till I got deployed. Never an intelligble syllable. I even had them in the same room as my greys. Miss my little guys. They are something else.
@jxh0703 yeah!! my macaw only talks when it makes sense haha. so he says come here! when he wants me to come to him. or he makes a "mmmmm" sound when he eats something yummy. wish he talked as much as urs!
I let my 8 week old parrotlet watch this video and he turned and climbed onto my hand. He didn't let me scratch his cheek before (I had him for only two days) but he allowed me to this time! Wonder what Koolaid is saying :}
@jxh0703 Hehe :) Once, my parrotlet had seen it but I'd left it in the other room and he went mad...he had a tantrum and he peeped really loud..so I went and got it, waited till he calmed down which took like 5 seconds haha and THEN gave it to him...cheeky boy hehe<3
congratulations you have a wonderful parrotlet, I hope mine can become such good talkers like him. Any idea how old he was when he started talking? mine are young and I hope having a pair doesnt stop them from talking. I'm new to the breed and trying to pick up tips from everywhere to ensure I keep healthy and happy birds
@con0h did i reply to this? thanks, he started talking at 2 months, i think he's just a very vocal bird & picks up tones & intonations easily so he just needs something to copy haha. yup, it's good to get tips from different sources - books, internet, people...i did lots of research on parrotlets before, during and after I bought them - irns & conures too. then you get to know what birds are all about & then u can trust your instincts with everythign else you do for them :))
We actually couldn't find any parrotlets for sale in our area. The breeder we were gonna get our parrotlet from didn't have any luck breeding her pair that she had. We ended up getting a green cheek conure instead. He's such a sweet bird! :)
he's saying "excuse me" "silly bird" and "good boy"? Lol you know I never realize they do talk until now. I thought they're just chirping cuz my neighbor have some and I kept hearing it next door (I live in an apartment) lol
@pinoyALLmotorEVOIXMR every species has it's own characteristic & depending on if it was hand-raised. But the bigger the bird, the bigger the brain & the louder they are & the messier they are lol
@suicidetekky he started repeating words at 2 months. start with simple words that have a lot of consanant sounds like 'kiss kiss' 'step up' they like simple things & sounds
I am planning on buying a parrotlet. This is the first video I have watched that I could understand what they are saying, most just sound like chirping
@karion63 thx, yes he is talking. i talk clear & slow to him so maybe he picked it up like that. he also is an abnormally talkative bird, so not really the norm i don't think..
@wysefiona sort of but not really. first of all, they'd never find 'cooked' eggs in the wild. They eat what we give them. 2nd, chickens are a different species (not that it matters cuz they are really both considered 'birds'. Having said that, different species eat ea other. So do we. Maybe we taste good cooked too! nah!!! :p
ive had mine for a little over a month now & hes about 4 months old. he is such a sweetheart & we are trying to teach him how to talk. any suggestions or tips?
@alliewuzhere keep talking! Read through some of the posts on the video of Koolaid playing Peekaboo...I explain that it's the tone & sound of the words, simple ones. They're also more vocal when they're happy/excited. give a treat if they mimic you.
I just love this video! Koolaid is amazing and I love the little voice :-) I play it for my Petunia almost every day, hoping she will pick up on some of it.
@KNB123100 aww, thank u so much. He can be a little monster sometimes but that's because i have spoiled him when he was my only bird. So it's made him very smart since he's been exposed to a lot of things when he was a baby. Parrotlets are very cute. Conures are very smart as well, but they are much much cuddlier than parrotlets.
@KimonoHire haha yeah i didn't know what it was until the breeder told me it's him regurgitating food...they do that when they're excited etc...and now he does it to feed smokey & her soon-to-be babies :)
@dontlookitsurface it requires patience and a lot of training. It helped that koolaid was hand-tamed. I also looked up stuff on the internet & got to know bird behavior. you move slow around them, get them to trust your hand by giving treats etc.
@zarynkristel thank u, ur teeco is very cute, he is a chatter box as well haha. i always wanted a blue parrotlet but ended up getting the white instead :)
how did you "help him" to talk? I have been repeating to mine "cute" but he doesn't care. I have 2 males, one is wild and one is my baby! But I have been looking for a girlfriend for the wilder one, but I live in Colo, and there are hardly any parrotlets here, the few that are here are sooo expensive.
@rjpthomas it helps if you repeat words clear & say them with a rhythm...instead of monotone...u could say a normal 'bye' to someone but if you say "buuuuh byyyyyeee" they're more likley to want to say it too :)
did u search on the internet to see if breeders will ship across the states?
@jxh0703 That makes sense. I think I might have been a little monotone. lol. I got the mean one shipped from california... the guy lied about the whole thing. The bird was way older than promised, and definitely NOT handfed and tame as promised. I did all the research I could, but in the end, I learned a valuable lesson! I wish I could just find an adult female around here. :(
@rjpthomas Lol 'the mean one'. I used to call Koolaid 'the mean one' too...but they are reformable...hard work tho. mine just went to 'birdy camp' (friend's place) for a couple months. he's more tame now.
yeah it's tricky getting so-called tame birds when u don't get to pick. hope u find one soon...
@xxLabrat407xx I know! i thought it was just a dance too until i asked his breeder...and then finally saw him feeding smokey...i think it's in one of my other vids.
ahhh I always wondered when mine does that what he was doing. MIne also stretches out his neck and opens his mouth like a yawn, but several times in a row....
@jxh0703 Oh wonderful - I'm hoping my p'let talks (he's 2 months old) but if not that's ok too. I'm training him to do a few tricks (he's doing great) but mostly I'm entertained by just himself - preening, eating, playing and his company.
koolaide rocks lol i have a blue male about a yr old and he is a big fan of koolaide he now repeats what koolaide says this vid is his fav!!! its so cute when he says excuse me lol
Thank you for posting all your Koolaid videos. My parrotlet especially likes this one. He is four months old and says "over here", "what are you doing", "peek-a-boo", "how are you", "pretty bird" and "tickle, tickle". Thanks for the help getting him started Koolaid (you're so adorable)!
@mrazwordplay wow thank u! yes birds are so amazing when they learn to talk...some things they say aren't just a coincidence! It makes me happy that people (and birds) get enjoyment out of these videos!
hope your parrotlet is doing well...sometimes the vocal ones are not quiet when u want them to be!
Its not too late to teach a bird new tricks if its 2-3 years right? I bought an albino parrotlet just recently and would like for him to learn many sayings! :(
@fujishima13 I don't think it's too late! Maybe try talking to him lots? I speak kinda loud & clear sometimes, like i'm talking to a 1 or 2 yr old...cuz that's kinda how they act :p...repeated phrases in context help. i also find they like to talk if they are vocal type of birds. They talk when they're happy too. Try simple words "kiss kiss"...peekaboo!!
@jxh0703 He is a very silent one and only sings and screams when i play other parrotlet videos on here~ He has been quite a biter too (roughly had him for a week) so i hope he soon learns to love me and be kind when i approach him... I'll try talking to him more clearly in hopes that he'll learn, I've been seeing vids like yours (and others who feed them apple wedges) so i'm going to attempt to treat him with those kind of things to see if he'll bite me less!
@arully123 Depends on the bird. Koolaid started talking at 2 months -he said 'kiss kiss'. my Ringneck (larger yellow one) took about 8 months. I hear it takes longer for bigger birds.
@TheFirebird23 I find that they won't eat stuff if it's right in front of them. since birds like to forage, if you 'hide' it, or you have something they want, they're more likely to want it and try to get it. or you can try mixing the different food with something they like (ie. millet).
How did you get him to talk like that? I keep on repeating words to my parrotlet hoping he will start copying them, but he doesn't. He just starts getting annoyed at me!
he's just a vocal bird - sometimes 'yells' too. the other parrotlet i have learned to talk from koolaid but it's watered down version. i had koolaid as the only bird for a whole year & spent alot of time w/ him. he started with saying "beep beep beep" :p
how old is the cute little guy? how long did it take for him to start talking? i have a little guy thats 5 months old and i got him when he was 3 months. i play this vidio hoping he will learn to talk : )
yes, apparently it's them regurgitating for food when they wiggle their neck! so i guess he's extra excited in this video cuz there's no bird to feed!
OMG...that is too adorable!

How do you get your bird to try out different foods? Mine only likes veg and fruit if I'm eating it! He doesn't touch it when I place it in his cage.

@TheFirebird23 I find that they won't eat stuff if it's right in front of them. since birds like to forage, if you 'hide' it, or you have something they want, they're more likely to want it and try to get it. or you can try mixing the different food with something they like (ie. millet).

He is a cutie pie. My little parrotlet learned some words from me, but most of his vocabulary came from the Senegal that shares his room.

yeah birds learn from each other too! i swear my ringeck started talking cuz of my parrotlet!

How did you get him to talk like that? I keep on repeating words to my parrotlet hoping he will start copying them, but he doesn't. He just starts getting annoyed at me!

he's just a vocal bird - sometimes 'yells' too. the other parrotlet i have learned to talk from koolaid but it's watered down version. i had koolaid as the only bird for a whole year & spent alot of time w/ him. he started with saying "beep beep beep" :p

kooalaid is soo cute!
is it normal for it to move its head like that when it wants food?? lol
xxbechasyxx 2 years ago
yes, apparently it's them regurgitating for food when they wiggle their neck! so i guess he's extra excited in this video cuz there's no bird to feed!
