The fucking ball hit the ground , if it hits the ground that means its a LOW pitch, blue made a bad call, and maybe needs to get his eyes checked , these aint to major leagues its little league.
@xxxbeautifulpeoplexx just cause the ball hits the gorund after passing the plate does not make the ball a ball. it is a stirke where it corsses the plate. no where it lands learn before you speak.
@xxxbeautifulpeoplexx the ball was not on the ground till it pass him period so don't sit there and lie i am not blind nor stupid. therefore you still wrong.
The strike is called where the ball crosses the plate, not where it crosses the batter. So that, by deffinition, was a strike. Moral of the story is, on 2 strikes, protect the zone.
who knows how the game was going? it could of been a bad game and the kids sucked, so the ump was stealing pitches and helping the game move, By the looks of the kids it doesnt look like a high level game. Like dude said just shut up and go back to thye dugout, u might see him again, I love how players act like jerks when an ump makes a mistake, Have u ever seen an ump get upset when the player boots a sure dp or drops a can of corn? no because the umpires usually act professional.

sure it's a bad call...but you embarass yourself, your team, all the fans in the crowd, and baseball fans alike when you take of your helmet, make a blowjob face and walk away from the batters box.
No i paused it and took a peice of paper and measured strait from the ball at the front of the plate and it hit the lower half of the knee and the strike zone is bottom of the knees to the chest so technically its a strike but as close as it gets to a ball
fucking deal with it, it happens to all of us just dont argue with the umpire you have to deal with him the whole game and u may see him at another game
@mtrotb i can understand a low fastball but a pitch in the dirt like that... i would've gone ape shit. Plus he should've ran on a dropped third strike
at this level, they throw so slow that the ball dives. the strike zone is the very front of the plate, and the bottom of the strike zone is defined by any part of the ball that is even with the bottom of the knees. i still believe it was a ball, but not by much
Look, whether or not the pitch was a strike isn't debatable. That ball was out of the strike zone. If you are going to argue that it wasn't then you're an idiot. End of discussion.
Your an idiot chuckfan1. That ball broke way too early and was below his knees before it crossed the plate. Don't be a douche. Aslo, there's no way a reasonable hit could be put into play with that crappy pitch.
The pitch was low, but it wasn't nearly as bad as commenters here are making out. The strike zone goes to the *bottom* of the knee, as most people posting here are clearly unaware. The ball was on a downward arc; the fact that it later hit the dirt is irrelevant.
Jake deserves a warning for whipping off his helmet and acting that way. He needs to learn what's acceptable. In high school that would be an automatic ejection.
Even at this level, little kids, thats a ball. It hit the dirt. Yes, the bottom of the knee is correct, maybe even a couple inches lower at this level. But if the ball comes in at shoe top level, and the bounces, that is not a hittable, pitch, which is what the strike zone in theory , is. Wasnt on a downward arc, it never arced. It bounced, got to be a ball. The batters actions afterward arnt good, but thats a separate issue.
Never said it wasn't a ball, just said it "wasn't nearly as bad as commenters here are making out."
If we're going to be subjected to videos of every pitch that was a few inches low yet called a strike we're going to overload even YouTube's vast server space.
And chuckfan, while I am generally on your side, how can you say the ball wasn't on a downward trajectory. The pitcher is on a mound, and the ball is (usually) released from shoulder level or above, and crosses the plate below the batter's knees. That's just basic physics.
If the smallest part of the ball touches the smallest part of the strike zone, it is a strike. In this video (and I've replayed it a gazillion times, frame by frame and continuous) The ball hits the zone at the front of the plate. The batter's front foot is at the rear point of the plate and he is leaning back a bit, so his knee is even father back. The catcher is a half mile behind the plate. At the front of the plate, the ball is knee high- a strike. Happens when you're deep in the box.
As others have said, the dirt doesn't matter. A lot of pitches that cross the lower part of the strike zone will end up in the dirt when the catcher is that far back.
As for the batter's reaction, he should have been taught by now that what he did was wrong: whipping off his helmet and spreading his arms could have earned him an ejection. Turning back on his way to the dugout to face the umpire and complain should have sealed the deal. His coach should also have been on him for such antics.
I agree. And even if it was a ball, it was definitely close enough that he should be protecting with two strikes.
I see this a lot with kids, looking for a walk and going crazy when the umpire makes a bad call. Umpires are going to make bad calls... trust your swing in this situation and protect the plate... don't strike out looking.
Actually, most catchers at the JV level do a good job blocking the ball and protecting the umpire. Bad pitches and foul balls usually fly around me. Not at me. But everyone who plays the game will get hit. It's just the way it goes. The trick is to trust your protective gear and not flinch when that high inside fast ball is fouled off the bat and hits your face mask.
@ebliebe that you get use to in time. your first reaction is to back away and flinch its just normal reaction. I know a coch in the ll game who had no issues with me as an umpire and when i was talking to him when he was tranning some of his team he throw a ball at the fence and i wouldn't flinch so i think he was testing me.
At this level (little itty bitty guys) you have to or it would be a walk-fest, to be honest. You've got to have a pretty liberal zone in this age division.
The level of play is 15-16yr olds (LL Seniors, JV-HS). They are hardly little and are very familiar with the LL zone of top of the knees to arm pits. The video was made for the benefit of the plate umpire. Someone had to show him what he was calling and help him correct his plate mechanics.
that wasn't a strike. end of story. even the catcher started to throw the ball back to the pitcher and once the ump called him out he threw it around the horn so stop with the by his kness bullshit. give the fat kid a break.
ok apparently you dont play baseball because that is not a strike its a ball thats a horrible call and yes an umpire can change it because if he made a call that bad he shouldnt too bad about it
I'm a collegiate and high school umpire. Once you call a pitch a strike, that's it, end of story. There's no changing your mind on a pitch. How about you learn a bit about umpiring before you go off on me.
This asshole in the video would have been so tossed if I was back there.
umpires are allowed to change calls. and if i was the batter and you were the ump i would go off on you because apparently you dont know where the dame strike zone. knee to chest learn a lil bitch
Only on certain plays are they allowed to change their calls (appeal plays) in which they must confer with their partner first. Pitches are not appealable calls, therefore right, wrong, or indifferent the initial call must stand. Changing your call on a pitch shows lack of confidence.
If I didn't know where the strike zone was, I wouldn't be a collegiate umpire would I? You go off on me, I'd throw your sorry ass out and be happy to rub it in your face. I've been umpiring for a long time now...
...and I'm damn good at it too. Would I have called that pitch in the video a strike? Absolutely not. But I do miss them every once in awhile, and I know I do. It's a judgment call. Until you get back there and try to umpire a game, you have no right to complain. We're human beings and we miss calls every now and then, and one strike isn't going to change the game anyway. Get over it.
the strike zone includes the bottom of is knee when and or if the batter was to swing, he being in the back of the box forces the pitcher to bring the pitch up other wise it will fall below his knee but being back in the box like that allows the pitch to have that much more space to move. from the angle we have if he was to take a low and long front leg kick it could have been a strike, we dont see him swing there for we can not comment on the call, but the kids fat so im going with the ump
Wow - I know we have wide zones in anything below varsity level ball, but dang, that was in the dirt. This umpire is jeapordizing his integrity calling that a strike!
same thing happend to me and i had the same face!!!! iu wanted to punch the ump in the face very hard because he was some shitty prep umpire who only cares about getting paid! hes a faggot
[as an umpire for about a decade] I've done a few leagues where the league officials explicitly tell the umpires that the strike zone is X to Y, where that has literally gone "Ankles to Chin", even at this level. I'm guessing this was 11-12 yr olds, because of the slowness of the pitch, and I've had those instructions at this level before, so I would believe the outrage, but also understand the call.
...then again, I could just be justifying something that shouldn't be.
Sorry for the late response. The level of play is 15-16yr olds (LL Seniors). The video was made for the benefit of the plate umpire and not the batter. Someone had to show him what he was calling. What do you don't see is how Jake's face turns into a big smile as he enters the dugout.
The fucking ball hit the ground , if it hits the ground that means its a LOW pitch, blue made a bad call, and maybe needs to get his eyes checked , these aint to major leagues its little league.
