grande means large in italian as well as spanish, so you could argue that with the addition of 'baristas' they're being fairly consistent with their italian theme. venti which means twenty is used to denote the 20 fluid ounces that the cup contains. tall is generally considered less than large which is fairly logical as tall implies height without width.
