Tony killed Chris because he couldn't trust him to be the #2 man he gave orders through like he always planned. He knew Chris held a grudge over Adrianna and the accident showed him that he couldn't trust him with his life since he was still getting high. Tony talked about the importance of family a lot but he only saw Chris as something useful. When he stopped being useful and became a liability instead he killed him like he did with everyone else in his way.
