@b3boneman Its probably because England is where the Industrial Revolution began and fortunately we still have some world class companies such as Rolls-Royce who are geniuses when it comes to turbine blades. This type of technology is extremely difficult to perfect and you can't just model it in play-doh. Look on the bright side, with all those extra megawatts for free it should soon pay for itself. Pity that Victoria Falls is still running to waste but its a long way off. Hydro needs no fuel!
Her inability to make the " i " sound in the word "turbine" is because she uses up all her energy in over stating her " o " sounds ( like the way she says Mexico ). LOL.
Wood Group - Turbine aren't good maschine....thats rabbbbbbish !!!! Poor technologie . This design was stolen by Alstom who made at the ABB time the same ( but 10 years ago.)
is this really a steam turbine generator? Becuase the design of this thing seems pretty danm identical to a gas turbine which uses the combustion of fuel to the turn the turbine directly....wonder if they just made up the steam turbine part sothe general public who watched this could try and understand how this thing worked. hahaha
@SaGalv It's a steam turbine. You could take apart a gas turbine and it would look much like what’s shown. From what I've been told, a turbine is a turbine. Thanks for your comment. :)
@pc2drth a turbine is a turbine, but a steam turbine is not a gas turbine. Both use a similar concept, but they both operate alot differently, for one a steam turbine uses external combustion and a gas turbine uses internal combustion
@pc2drth i agree with you, but you said a turbine is a turbine, with is true in the basic function...but on a gas turbine the turbine itself is subjected to much higher temps and extreme condtions (in comparision) with a regular steam turbine. Also the first half of a gas turbine engine, though the appearance is identical to a turbine is really a compressor...
@SaGalv Yes, it is definitey a steam turbine. Similar to most gas turbines, except that most gas turbines for generation do burn to the turbine directly, but also produce steam to turn different parts of the turbine (combined cycle). However, very different than a gas turbine in say a helicopter, which uses a two shaft two stage design. This video is very typical of any coal fired steam turbine.
@hamiltonrrw For some reason its not popular anymore for countries to design and manufacture their own infrastructure and facilities. Here in the UK we seem to outsource everything from other countries. The further away the better. Apparently. Hardly anything here has Made In Great Britain stamped on it anymore. Sad.
Now I'm curious, does this plant have a turbine set like this: HP-IP-Generator & LP1-LP2-Generator? Basically you have what's called "Crossovers" for the steam to travel from the HP & IP Turbines over to the Low Pressure Turbine side.
That's a really nice fan set though! 12 MW goes a LOOOONG way!!!!
To answer your first question: Laramie River has this set-up - HP/IP, then LP1, LP2, then generator.
Second comment: Basically, youre right. However, once the steam leaves the HP section it travels back to the boiler for reheat before returning to the IP and LP sections of the turbine.
Okay, that makes plenty of sense then! Congratulations on that gorgeous new Turbine and the added Megawatts!!! Anytime you can so that with very little overall work, that's GREAT!!

It always amuses me they way Americans insist on pronouncing the word terbine as terban. A terban is a form of head dress.

@SaGalv The turbine shown in the video is the HP/LP section of steam turbine (high pressure/low pressure) from a coal-based power plant.

T. Boone Pickens paid $3M for each of his GE 1.5 MW wind turbines($2M per MW.) $8M for a 12 MW increase sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

12 megawatts is enough electricity to power another 9,600 homes. That's pretty good, especially since the plant isn't using more fuel.

wow extra 12 megawatts.
