  • SNK FTW i think they should have him in a fighting game

  • This is one of my favorite games ever (the NES version, mind you, the GBC version was balls). This is the first game that ever hit me emotionally- when I found the

    **SPOILER**

refugee's village had been massacred I was simultaneously sad and enraged. I killed Mado really hard for that.

  • @tofraser I was waiting for you to use the fruit of lime to unpetrify yourself. Lol classic game. Apparently they used you for the game cover too, with one of those plastic shields with a dragon on it. I had one of those as a kid. The game had a great plot and other advanced features like items to recharge magic and health without expending limitations, once obtained anyway.

  • What the hell! No gameplay? That seems important for these commercials.

  • You have to take into consideration when this was made. Yes, it's a little cheesy, but so were most things in the 80's. Nevertheless, I loved playing this game as a kid, even more than Zelda. It had a certain uniqueness to it and made me afraid of 1997 - The "END DAY." I remember that year fondly. lol

  • Haha it was funny the way commercials were made back then. I think the only game they actually showed was Mario.

  • I thought this commercial was pretty cool. I didn't know Crystalis had a commercial..

  • i never saw this commercial, but the games rules ahead of its time~

  • One of the best games for NES.

  • Terribly cheap-ass 80's commercial that doesn't even show the game.

  • Cool! The Syfy movie of the week :) HAHAHAHA

  • stupid

  • this game mosta be no popular i have never play this one

  • Amazing.. never knew they made a commercial. I miss the 80s

  • Holy shit, they actually made a commercial on this game!? I never knew o.o

  • Looks like a Dio music video.

  • 0:17 The End Day came for this guy way too soon!

  • Game was so saweet. Needs to be remade.. i'd buy a wii then

  • @phubans No lies. I am guessing I was 15 because I don't think I had my driver's license yet. I remember having to be taken to the martial arts studio to get sword training, and I got my license when I was 16... anyway, you don't have to believe that's me. I'm sure neither of us will lose sleep over it.

  • @tofraser What other acting work have you done?

  • Comment removed

  • @CaptainJeanLPicard don't act anymore. When I was younger I was in a number of TV commercials and industrial videos (in Silicon Valley). I moved behind the camera and started doing video editing, digital media, etc.

  • I wonder if they still have the props.

And the ending is a WARNING!! There's a point in the game where you can't go ANYWHERE because the stuff ahead of you is overleveled.

  • lmao the end is a FAIL

  • LOL THAT WAS SICK!! omg crystalis was sooo ahead of its time,

  • Wow. Awesome.

  • Always thought it was funny how the guy looked like Rafael Nadal.

  • LOL.

  • What the hell where's the gameplay?

  • @smaery That IS the gameplay. Goblins shoot green goo at you and you die. Nuff said. . .

  • Good thing I never saw that commercial before I got the game because I probably would've assumed it was a piece of shit.

  • seriously, lol. but this game was amazing anyway.

  • A budget, something this commercial clearly didn't have lol

  • Shouldn't they have shown the guy killing the beast instead, or give an assumeable outcome?

  • game over, deal with it

  • You know, in the game, if you get stoned while using your sword, it stays in your hand, outstretched. It will damage enemies even still: fun to use against the snake monsters in the waterfall cave. :)

  • lmfao. they should do this for more recent games.

  • lmao i love the old nes commericals

  • Uh... show the game? Maybe a little bit? It's a good game. It's not like they had to hide it.

  • ...*looks at computer screen, looks at NES*

    ....lol wut

well thakfully i didnt ever see that commercial nor base my decision to buy this aweseome game off of.....that....

    .....wut

  • would've been a much more effective commercial if they showed REAL GAMEPLAY instead of this crap lol

  • Classic Game, Cheesy Commercial.

  • That makes it look like you get a game over no matter what. LOL.

    Love the game though.

  • The point is, are YOU up to the challenge? This guy failed, but maybe you can succeed... :D

  • HAHAHAHAHHA Truuuuuueeeeee hahahaha Good point lol

  • What? No gameplay? :S

  • The game was awesome but this commercial doesn't make it look very good to be honest.

  • Awesome game! Watching this commercial now, it looks like a couple of kids filmed it in their backyard! lol

  • One of the worst video game commercials ever, but Crystalis is one of the top 5 games on the NES! Completely crushes the original LOZ (although I love that too), and was years ahead of its time.

  • one of those first two monsters sounded like Godzilla

  • Funny how that commercial had nothing to do with the storyline.

  • Wow, it's cool to see this out there. I'm the guy in the commercia ... the one with the sword. It was a fun production. I actually receivefew weekends of martial arts sword training! Anyway, slam it all you want. I had fun making it, got paid and I got a free game system and Crystalis (which I loved!).

  • That's awesome! How old were you when you made the commercial?

  • Probably 15 yo.

  • That's pretty cool! But how did they unfreeze you from being made of stone?

  • In truth, I would manifest anew every time someone pressed the Power button or pressed Reset. Even now, I am nothing more than bits and bytes appearing for your amusement. Just don't tell my wife that.

  • Is that a wig you had to wear, or were you just rocking the Peter Pan look back in the 80s?

  • @tofraser being money to get stoned must have been worth it though. what blade were you using :p

  • @tofraser Hmm, either you're lying about being the actor in this commercial or you're lying about you're age in your profile. If you're 35 now then you would have only been 15 when this commercial was made, and this guy looks a bit older than 15.

  • @tofraser too cool. I gotta get this game.

  • @tofraser You are a living legend..... Not really, but yeah, that's very awesome

  • @tofraser Why didn't they give you purple hair and clothes?

  • @tofraser your full of shit

  • @lod1993 really? who are your sources? In any case, that's not a nice thing to say.

  • @tofraser Crystalis is awesome, but this commercial SUCKS. Even so, if you really are the actor in the commercial, that's pretty awesome. Did you get to keep any of the props from the commercial? Crap or not this commercial is a classic part of NES history and to be apart of it is pretty impressive.

  • @Palmerifics I'm not sure what happened to the props. I would have to ask my Dad (the director) what happened to the creatures, but I didn't get to keep anything from the shoot. It's really interesting to see all the comments about how bad (or good) this commercial is. It's being see out of its time, so it's hard to compare it ... but I believe it was an award-winning commercial back in the day.

  • @tofraser Whoa your dad was the director? Now I feel like a total jerk for saying the commercial sucked, but I guess I just feel like it didn't have a whole lot to do with Crystalis. It actually reminds me of the "HyperReality" Dragon Strike VHS (do a youtube search for "Board James: DragonStrike - Cinemassacre " if you want to see a review on it) and it was pretty unique for its time too, so it is pretty neat in a way. If you do find any of the props, you should upload some pics online :D

  • @Palmerifics HAHA, I remember the Dragon Strike VHS game... I bought it -_-

  • LOL I saw the same shield at Halloween stores.

  • ok the game looks nothing like that

  • This was surely my favorite NES game. Period.

  • I hate PARALYSIS

  • ...scary stuff happens when you fill a room with nothing but 40+year old engineers, trying to advertise their latest game!

    :-D

  • This commercial.... XD

I never realized how cheesy old commercials were until almost the year 2010 XD

  • They are cheezy, but this was back when power rangers were cool, so cheezy graphics and commercial were ok. (but really... power rangers need to upgrade some their effects...)

  • Wow, this game has good graphics.

  • The OG of the NES system.

  • good game, gehy commercial

  • Dang, I loved this game. *sigh*

  • ...owned...

( Looking back on it,I can't believe comercials like that actually helped sell games lol)

  • es el mejor juego del mundo, pero el comercial es una porqueria jajaja

  • At least they were being honest in the commercial: You're GONNA get petrified, and you're GONNA die. It's a fact! ^_^

  • I laghed so much for this cause of all the good comments. :D haha

  • lol that guy got pwned

  • I'm going to sum up this commercial - crappy commercial; great game. That's all I got to say, since there was really nothing good to say about this commercial. Nintendo really did a poor job in advertising this game. Why else would Crystalis be unknown to so many? Reply, so I can find out what you all think about my comment?

  • You're statement about the advertising is very true but, also remember that the rpg following was nothing like it is today. Those of us lucky enough to have played this game as most likely children had a nice road paved for some great rpg classics to follow.

  • Secret of Mana is like the buffed up crystalis for super nintendo, you should check it out.

  • i wouldnt say buffed up. it is similar in control. but crystalis was way better. woot magic.

  • Agreed on all points. The only thing remotely redeemable about this add was the attempt at humor at the end, It was just a little understated. And what was with the announcers voice?!! Loved the game I played through it so many times I found the teleport glitch (with the help of my little sis) by accident.

  • Much love to SNK.

  • omg so old.

  • So, what's the moral of the commercial, eh? Face the dragon, become petrified? Like THAT would sell games...

  • I'd buy it.

  • "Are you upto the challenge" its challenging you to try and not get petrified which would probably attract customers

  • Dude! I never saw this commercial back in 1990, but loved this game. Market appeal in this commercial was lacking though. Glad the game's popularity made up for it.

  • Best freakin game ever!...in my humble opinion XD

  • Heh, what a corny comercial - what were the marketers smoking?

  • I always prounced it

    Chris-tall-iss

I believe it's supposed to be prounced

    Crist-a-liss

Anyway, this is my favorite game of all time.

  • The commercials for the old fantasy games all seem to be amusing.

  • I always pronounce it "cry-stah-lis"

  • me too :3

  • The character should have been wearing purple clothes like in the game.

  • Yea. I never understood why they made his shirt red on the box...

  • The game was much, much cooler than that commercial made it look.

Crystalis was one of the best NES games ever made.

  • A completely unappreciated nes classic. One of my favorites.

  • I used to pronounce it "cry-stal-is"

  • "Wow... I just found out I've been completely mispronouncing the name of this game... and it's one of my favorite games ever, too. >.<"

Me too. I thought it was "Chris-tuh-liss".

  • You've been mispronouncing it "chris-tuh-liss"?

How do you get a "tuh" sound out of "tal"?

  • Boy, this sure makes me want to play the game. This is the best commercial ever.

  • hahahaha this is awesome! :D

  • Wow... I just found out I've been completely mispronouncing the name of this game... and it's one of my favorite games ever, too. >.<

  • I spent soooo many hours on this game, lol. It's one of my favorites.
