This is showing John Adams constant conflict between religion and politics should he do what he thinks is right but what everyone thinks is wrong or should he follow everyone else thinking it's gods choice that is why he was an awful president because he could never take action because of his religion influencing his thoughts but he was the best lawyer and a phrnominal political philosopher
@hobbyguy14 John Adams set-up everything that Thomas Jefferson "achieved" in his Presidency. He also saved our country from bankruptcy. He was NOT an "awful" President. Some historians count him in the top ten most important.
@melarry yes i completely agree that he set up everything for T.J. John was the brain behind the Decleration and Tom just made it sound good and he was not as good a president as a philosopher because he violated the first amendment by saying that people could not outspokingly be against the government and he was not good at persuading people to agree on his views just like J.Q.A. thought Jays Treaty was signed as a highlight of his presidency and he was the first huge supporter of the navy
@melarry but yes he may be one of the most important people in our counrtys history but hes years in his presidency were not his best his presedincy cant rank in terms of Lincolns, F.D.R. Reagen Eisenhower and Truman and he could be considered the father of the Constitution for his book THoughts of Governement showed many similarities in our nations government and James Madison did read it so yes John Adams is very important and i am a big fan of him im not in any way trying to deminish him
If you look closely William Daniels, you will notice him making weird mouth movements.
When they were filming this scene, it was a chilly Philadelphia evening, as opposed to the hot and muggy one history recorded that specific night being.
Daniels sucked on ice cubes throughout this whole number to avoid shivering and ruining the illusion.
Have to admire the man for his dedication, that's all I have to say.
I LOVE this version compared to the one I saw on video. I had to watch this film in 8th grade history and then watched it again not too long ago (our teacher skipped the "boring" parts, a.k.a. John and Abigail's conversations.) The whole line about Congress being there just to "drive John Adams mad" was HILARIOUS. I wish they had kept that in the original video.
@MildlyAnnoyed There was a laserdisc release in the 80s (I think?). They had almost all the footage, but they couldn't find "How'd you like to borrow a dollar off one o' them?"
Very well done. I prefer this version than the shorten version that the DVD and the VHS version played. I love listening to John Adams's remarks. They always make me laugh because of his irration with congress. He certainly had a way with words. :) But our country needed him at the time. Glad he was one of our founding fathers... along with Franklin, Jefferson, Livingstone, Sherman, etc., We needed these strong fine men to speak for the American people.
You got that right, my friend ;) He may have been annoying and disliked. But he did help get a Declaration of Independence drafted. Which is what the objective was. I must admit. I am pretty partial to Jefferson. Since he went to the College of William & Mary. Our hometown college here in Williamsburg, Virginia ;) I feel a kinship with Thomas Jefferson. I also do like John Adams too. All our Founding Fathers were great men. We all should be very proud of them & respect them.
That is a myth (unfortunately perpetuated by this otherwise wonderful movie). It was John's personal perception that he was "obnoxious and suspected" but he wasn't. He definitely was bipolar and had mood swings but then these men were all human beings with problems and flaws. As it happens, Adams came away with more lifelong friends from the original Congress than anyone else.
Very well done. I prefer to see the long version of the peice then just a small segment. It says more about our history and what John Adams had to endure with congress. Thanks for sharing this peice with others :)
ya know guys it's sad, over 200 years and congress STILL hasn't gotten any better ;)

I need a soundboard with John Adams quotes from this movie.
including:
"for god sake listen to me"
"Never, Never"
"one foot in front of the other"
"oh, shut up!"
"Good God" AND
"that was the most revolting display i have ever witnessed"

Wow, I have never seen the full version of this song. NICE VIDEO. Either this or the Lees of Old Virginia is my favorite.

One of the best songs in the movie... I really wish it was in the original version.

'As if I'm the one to do it, they'll run their quill pens through it.'
I love it when he says that, infact that song is probably one of the best in this movie

I just ordered the Director's Cut (DVD), which hasn't been delivered yet. So the director's cut does not have this full song?
gracenote999 3 years ago
No, Piddle Twiddle is cut as it is in the theatrical version for the Director's Cut DVD.

@BullMooseFilms This is the version in the theatrical score, just with the added spoken text (which they do a lot in this film)...

But John Adams was the funniest. XD He really was "annoying and disliked".

@WhiteIguana I feel a kinship with John for the same reason the place where he was born is only an hour and fifteen minutes away from my own....
