I see a LOT of demo reels, and this one's presentation is different enough that it is memorable, and that basically is what gets you hired for a gig out of a stack of other reels. It does show what he can do, and that's all it's meant to do.

It's not really the content of the demo reel that matters, it's the capacity to get certain jobs done. The reel shows that he could do most of what you might toss across a 2d motion graphics artist's desk. I wouldn't hire him as the lead designer unless I was looking for that particular aesthetic.
