Isn't the effect of electricity instantaneous? Like if you had a line of bricks, all touching, and you pushed at one end, the one at the other would move instantaneously? I'm just quoting GCSE Physics here. Apparently the actual movement of the electrons happens about 1-2m/s.
Nothing can be transmitted instantaneously, as far as anybody knows. Instantaneous transmission would have to occur at a rate faster than the speed of light. Instantaneous transmission would have to occur at a rate where no time at all could pass between events-quite the paradox!
In quantum mechanics, there are theories about instant transmission between entangled particles. If correct, these theories would topple our very notions of time and space. i.e time and space are mere illusions.
:P I get you. But even still, the kinetic energy applied to these hypothetical bricks travels almost instantly - yes, there will be some longitudinal compression of the bricks and minute gaps between them will take time to be filled but other than that the energy travels much faster than the actual rate you're pushing them at, which was the basic idea behind my analogy. :)
I understand your analogy. I thought your original question had to do with the speed of electricity. In everyday encounters with electricity (i.e. light bulbs, televisions, etc.) some people call it instantaneous because for all practical applications, it is. But if you're talking about pure Physics, then it is not accurate to say it is instantaneous. Sensitive measuring devices can prove this quite easily.
well according to special relativity, nothing travels faster than the speed of light. In the case of pushing a line of bricks, the other end does not really move instantaneously, the moment of "push" travels across the line of bricks as longitudinal waves inside the brick, where the speed of wave is limited by the material and tension of the bricks itself.
It is widely accepted that special relativity puts a max speed limit on how fast particles can travel, but scientists in Quantum Physics have suggested otherwise. They claim that we have misinterpreted the theory, and the only stipulation about light speed is this: all freely observing viewers must perceive the speed of light at the same rate. This is how they justify the seemingly instantaneous transmission of info. between remote, entangled elementary particles. It's very controversial.
Imagine if you could set up a string between the Earth and Mars, if you pull the string at one end, the other end won't move at the same time, the particles within the string pulls each other one by one by bonding forces like covalent forces.

Electricity don't travel at 186000 miles per second, it's the electric field that travels that fast.

Not being argumentative here, just wondering. (:

So it's much slower than the speed of light! ;)
