controlled demolitions do not have to bring the building straight down from the bottom as we usually see! weakening the central support columns from the basement with high explosives would be the best way to bring a building of that size down, taking out the columns at bedrock would use the weight of the building to make it collapse,then charges all the way up the internal core and floor trusses would give you the desired effect of a collapse like we see!
Controlled demolitions at just the base coloumns would not bring the building down in the time we saw. Both structures fell very close to free fall speed therefore there was not time for the weight of the above floors to crush the floors below, that would have slowed the collapse.

The Naudet brother documentary also states by multiple witnesses the foyer totally destoyed in one of the buildings, and people burning alive in the ground flor area..
