The Atari Jaguar CD was a graphic and sound monster, the only thing was that it doesn't have good games aside from Dragon's Lair and Primal Rage. The Sega CD won just by having lots of fun good games like Sonic CD, Final Fight CD, Dragon's Lair, Ecco the Dolphin, Earthworm Jim CD, Shining Force CD, Samurai Shodown, Snatcher, Fatal Fury Special, Mortal Kombat CD, Lunar 1 & 2, Popful Mail, Vay, Heart of the Alien and many others.
@jowrab jaguar CD...because sega cd + genesis 16bits for graphics +16bits for music, while jaguar has 4 16 bits processor running quite at same speed of sega cd.
Everyone thought the Sega CD was better, and I was just about to side with everyone else... until I saw the ship's missile explosion... THE JAGUAR WON ME OVER!!! :O
@jowrab even with the combined power of the genesis and the 32x behind it, the Jaguar was a more powerful system. it had more on screen colors and a higher resolution, as well.
Interesting video. I remember reading in magazines at the time that a 32XCD version of Soulstar was being developed, any ideas if it would have been the same as the JagCD one?
i understand the faluires of the jag the multi chip mess, the choice of catridge, i understand the saturn was difficuilt to programme cause it dual cpu assembly.
im aware that every machines carry bug in its hardware. the c64 turned them to its advantage.
i understand how the 3do, amiga cd32, and jaguar got squashed in the transition between 16bit gaming programs and 3d 32bit.
they were all a bit to early into the market to get enough 3rd party software that supported their machine
ok the first part we can ignore, the rest off it is a grown up argument.
my whole point was not on doom in it self. got side tracked, ok.
i recognised i got the motorola chip model wrong, and i posted that.
my point was a title that is a beta unreleased game should not be compared with a released title.
an unfair comparision, you should take a title released for both machines, like doom for the saturn and doom for the jaguar, rayman for the ps and jag.
@cant1rac I apologize for being an ass, it's a personality flaw of mine that I have a hard time coming to terms with.
The Sega Saturn is hard to program because of the way the SH2s are setup. They share a narrow bus with several other devices, which leads to bus saturation. Without precise timing from skilled programming, using both CPUs at the same time is nearly impossible. Most games usually just ran off one SH2 and disabled the other.
@cant1rac Where are you getting this blasphemous misinformation? Doom was released in Dec. of 1993, the jaguar in "late" 1994 and the PS in Nov. 1995. I don't think anyone was anticipating a game that had been released a year or two prior, and how would two consoles war that didn't exist at the same time?
The Jaguar was a disaster for Atari, its overcomplexity made it a burden to program, combined with weak 3rd party support and heavy competition. it was basically dead when it hit the market.
@cant1rac You also don't seem to understand that not all game manufacturers care about quality games, especially back in the dark ages then. Like the Jaguar, the SegaCD and Saturn were inherently complex to program. Instead of developers taking their time to port and optimize, they took massive shortcuts, like only utilizing half of the console's processing power, thereby reducing the performance of the game. The less money they spent and the quicker they got the product out the door, the better
@cant1rac I only call people idiots that genuinely deserve it. All you've been posting is poorly typed crap information touting you know everything about all consoles, when you clearly know nothing.
THERE IS NO SIMILAR HARDWARE BETWEEN THE MEGADRIVE AND SATURN. The 68EC000 is NOT a 68000, they are vastly different on how they perform.
its a motorola chips in both the jag and the saturn and the difficulty in programming their custom multiple proccesor, 6800 in jaguar used as a manager and the 68ce00 used in saturn, used for sound along with the yamaha chip ment they could run megadrive developed programms with little adaption, many software developer since the megadrive and snes were still big sellers, just ported the mega cd version.
sol feace is a good example of this..since its obvious its origin on the jaguar
@cant1rac Again, you have no idea what you're talking about. The 68EC000 is not a full 68000, and the Saturn VDP and memory mapping are vastly different than the Megadrive. The Saturn doesn't even have a Z80, and the Yamaha sound chip is completely different. You aren't going to "adapt" a Megadrive game to run on a Saturn, it's impossible. The only way a Megadrive game would run on a Saturn is if you emulated it, and that would be piss slow.
Sega saturn does have a motorola chip 68ec00 its was used for sound, but could use code with a little adaption easily programmed for the sega megadrive and the yamaha fh1 proccesor used for sound.. hence why despite the saturns large capasity.. alot of platform and space shooter titles, that were little more than enhanced mega cd games disgraced the platform, the atari jag had a motorola chip used as a manager, and suffered the same fate off too many inferiour 16 bit titles (i own both machines)
i have a mega cd, well a few, and saturns and now picked up a jaguar cd, i now will get some games and have fun comparing them, i will also compare my 3d0 and cdi at the same time, will have to have my mates over that day
The music alone would make me want to buy this game. Oh Man! What a Score!!. Good thing I saw this video. It's just a 3D space invaders. What a snooze
one of my favorite games on Sega CD. A better comparison would have been some latter stages though. The stages in space are kinda bland visual-wise. I think any fan of space shooters in general who hasn't given this game a spin is missing out.
my friend had jaguar and i never knew there was a cd version of it. ive had sega cd however and loved to play sonic cd... man look at games today they have way better gfx and stuff but you can never give up a classic console if you still have one. i however don't know what happened to my segacd or snes... but i will remember the fun i had playing those games and even arcade. if i could id go back in time to play em all over again!
@rfutty No need for time travel - Sega CD and SNES units are readily available on Ebay and various online gaming shops. If you're lucky to have a local gaming specialty shop near you, the owner can probably get them for you, too.
@mikeshredder233 to be honest, although as a technicality the jag is 64 bit, it's not true 64 bit , the jaguar was more of a mash up of 5 processors and VDU's , meaning that the overall speed of the machine would be as slow as the slowest part seeing as everything will scale down as such Meaning that it really only had about 26.5 MHZ on it
I personally think sega should have waited to release the sega cd until 1992 and make it system 32 or model 1 based. that way they could have ignored the 32x and may still be making consoles to this day.
Apparently you can't read yowg's post to see that you're wrong. Dvevlopers just didn't take advantage of the Jag's hardware, I guess it was really hard to make games for it if you used more than just the 68000 processor.
Both were good ideas back in their time.Imo The Jaguar was most defintley not 64-bit i would consider it an Nes with a 32-bit processor. If I remember correctly the Sega CD was basically 16 bit with an Arcade processor similar to that of the Saturn. The 32X was just the same thing with an added processor to make more polygons. i can name alot of great games for both systems
You have no idea what you're talking about. The NES had a customized 8 bit 6502 derived processor made by Ricoh. The Sega CD has a 12.5 MHz 68000, which is technically a 32 bit CPU with 16/24 bit data/address buses.
The 32x has dual Hitachi SH2s at 23.5 MHz with a custom 15 bit VDP. The VDP on the MD is incapable of rendering polygons and the SCD doesn't have a VDP, just a CPU and some sound processors.
Your funny..I wasnt being exact with my information Im just saying in my experience what its capabilities technically are.Didn't I say the Sega CD was pretty much the same processor as the Sega Saturn which was 32-bit? I dont need all the technical information about stuff I know or can look up easily...
No, the Sega CD doesn't have the same processor as the Sega Saturn. The Sega CD has a Motorola 68000 @ 12.5 MHz, the Sega Saturn has 2 x Hitachi SH2 @ 28.7 MHz.
They couldn't be more different. You weren't being "exact", you were being grossly "wrong".
Your the dumb one. Your just looking for comments to reply to no matter how long they're.I spelled it wrong cause I typed fast and didn't realize I put the e before the r. You must have nothing better to do if your complaining about spelling on the internet.tool
Aww, is didums mad because someone corrected him? Internet is no excuse for poor grammar. That first "Your" is supposed to be "You're".
And another correction, I wasn't "comment hunting", I stumbled upon this video while looking for something. I didn't know there was a rule where I wasn't allowed to correct false information.
Go on any video and count how many people use correct grammar/punctuation in their comments. Only tools like you expect someone to care about punctuation when people try to type as fast as they can to comment..You think many people care about punctuation when they are texting? Idiot
Last time I checked I never Said Youtube was a texting service I was simply stating that people dont care about grammar when texting..You need to have your eyes checked.Your the one cranking out comments. you dont see me replying to week old comments like im bored.
Hardware-wise, was the Sega Cd a piece of shit? I don't think it handled some types of games well, like FMV or 3D type games. Rail shooters suck.
But there were wonderful platformers, strategy games, rpg's and, scrolling shooters on it. I am sick of hearing that it was garbage, it's games were garbage, etc. Yes there was a lot of garbage on it, but not enough to dismiss it like you and other smarmy types.
The SCD was as good in terms of what you paid for it when it was new. It could have been a much better addon with more RAM and a faster CD reader, but that would have driven up costs and made it sell less units.
I think SEGA would have been better off if they released an all-in-one console (with the 32x and SCD built in with the genesis) instead of trying to support dozens of different addons to an existing console.
@GGigabiteM The Saturn design, with two CPUs and 6 other processors, made it extremely difficult to get the absoulute maximum performance out of the console. The parallel design was too complex for many game developers.
The design wasn't that it was too complex, it was that it was flawed like the 32x was. The Saturn puts both SH2s on a narrow crippled bus that's already clogged with traffic from the VDPs and sound processor, which meant that you had to do some precision timing with the code in order to use both SH2s without killing performance.
Most games lacked skilled programmers for such tasks and just disabled one SH2.
@GGigabiteM If they would have worked with it, over time games would have looked a lot better but also if you see what PS1 had, games looked like ass on it. I seen this game running on a TV at a game stop before PS2 or deamcast were even talked about. The game looked at the time, the best looking game I had ever seen.. It was running of the Saturn. It was the only game running the system at it's full power and it looked 128 mb. I have no idea what that game was.
Most 3D games on both the Saturn an the PS1 used affine texture mapping, which is the reason they looked like crap with distorted level geometry and models. WYSIWYG basically applies to both consoles in terms of 3D capability because applying perspective correction to the entire scene being rendered takes almost 16 times more processing power, which both consoles just didn't have.
I don't know what you mean by '128 mb', data has nothing to do with detail.
@GGigabiteM Just a game I seen running on saturn years ago. Before 128bit systems. It looked 128 bit. It was a fighting game.. I can not remember the name..
K... I'll try this. Sega gen was 16bit, SNES was 16bit. Saturn was 32, PS1 was 32, N64. was 64... PS2, Dreamcast, and PS2 were 128 bit. Now we we are at 256 and 512.
Haha, I'm sorry, but you're an idiot and have no idea what you're talking about. First of all, there are no general purpose, mainstream CPUs that have a address or data bus over 64 bits. You clearly know nothing about hardware.
Skipping the old consoles; The N64 and Dreamcast were both 32 bit consoles. N64 has a R4300i which is 32 bits, and the Dreamcast has a 32 bit SH4, the PS2 has a 64 bit Emotion Engine.
@GGigabiteM I'm talking about the ram in the systems... I also work with UDK3 for video.. What you are telling me is that. None of the systems use video chips and use the CPU for every thing... The video chip in the 360 will use up 480 mb for gaming. The other part of the is used for other things. Just like the PS3 but the PS3 has 256 mb of ram for it's NV chip but can also use 128 more if needed and it needs it. I also can tell you that Yes you can find CPU's that are 128 bit... Ass. Look it up
Now you're just trolling. I've shown every single one of your comments to be completely and utterly wrong and you then do a 180 and go on a completely different topic to try and save face.
You also seem to not be able to read or comprehend sentence structure or you would have seen "general purpose mainstream" in front of CPU. There are no mainstream 128 bit CPUs, they're all for high-end scientific research and have a price tag as far as the moon from the earth.
@GGigabiteM Hey jack ass. From the start I was talking about video card or chip ram. Nothing about the CPU. You posted about the CPU. And Like I told you, yes they have 128 bit CPU's AMD is getting read to have one out soon and Intel. Yes they have 128 bit CPU's but not for home use.. Both 360 and PS3 used a 64 bit CPU's and I'm looking at the hardware specs now... They are not the Same CPU but still 64bit.. What the fuck is wrong with you?
You post vague and ignorant comments and then call someone an ass because they called you out for being wrong. Then you turn around and grab a select word or phrase out of a lengthy article and use it out-of-context to try and try to apply it to your already ignorant posts to attempt to make them look right.
I'm sorry, but your stupidity is beyond belief. Take what little dignity you have left and stop posting nonsensical blather that your ass flaps clearly typed.
Don't try and pin this on me son. You said a game was '128 bit', I say you're wrong and you call me an ass for it and expect me to be nice about it? You fail at life.
@GGigabiteM No.. "Just a game I seen running on saturn years ago. Before 128bit systems. It looked 128 bit. It was a fighting game.. I can not remember the name"
It looked like it was running off of PS2 or dreamcast... By the way. I'm to old to be your son... I'm 32. Key word "looked" not it was. Go back and read it. Also I have done more thing in my life than you will ever do with 2. From wrestling, music and all over the world, I have done more good things than you could ever think of
@GGigabiteM I have it.. You lack something... Reading.. Like I posted I seen something that looked ahead of it's times years ago. You took it to some other place.. And you wanna talk about "brain and the smarts" What started off as a nice comment ended up turned into you trying to look smart.. Nice job ass.
I'm not the one desperately searching wikipedia articles for the phrase "128 bit" to use it grotesquely out of context in calling an entire CPU architecture 128 bit in order to save face from looking like an idiot.
I'm also not the one calling the xbox 360 and ps3 256 and 512 bit consoles.
You're clearly ignorant and an idiot, you're just too proud to admit it.
@GGigabiteM Well you tell us. Because I just got 14 messages from people telling me you don't get and any one guy called you a jack ass. How much mem/ram do both the 360 and PS3 have? How much ram do they to render? We all know the CPU's do not render and they both use ATi or Nvidia chips.. So you tell us.
Well it looks like you have 14 simple-minded sympathizers if they think that sex has anything to do with you having absolutely no idea what your talking about. And since they obviously want to know (since they're probably between the ages of 9 and 16) I get plenty of it. The fact that they aren't bold enough to PM me directly basically proves the point and they don't want to get caught with their pants down.
If you MUST know, the PS3 has 512 Megabytes of RAM total (256 MB for the GPU and 256 MB for the CPU.) The Xbox 360 has a funky shared memory model with 512 Megabytes total which can be allocated differently in the programming of the specific game.
From what you've said so far, I think you think a Megabit == Megabyte, which is wrong.
@GGigabiteM The 360 will use up to 480 of it's mem for video or it's games to run I should say. The PS3 will use 128 for the CPU and other things running in the background. The PS3 will use up to 384 to run games. Well not to run games but that is the total mem is has for video. The 360 has the over head with mem but really, it is all about what the dev's do with it. Now the CPU for the PS3 can give up 128 and use it for the GPU. That is how you get 384. I got a friend who works for Bio.. :)
@GGigabiteM Well if you want to get down to the nitty gritty about memory, the 360 has around 522mb total ram (512mb of GDDR3 unified system memory used for gfx textures, sound, system functions and what have you but is fully allocatable and not locked to any one function, and 10MB embedded DRAM for the frame buffer used mainly for post processing ). the 10mb DRAM is located on the GPU itself so cant be used as system ram.
@GGigabiteM Let me try it like this.. (Xbox 360) Memory- * ATi GPU * 512 MB GDDR3 RAM * 700 MHz DDR * Unified memory architecture *SIMD: VMX128 with 2× (128×128 bit) register files for each core.
Well what do you know... The 360 and PS3 has 128 bit CPU's....
Congratulations, you figured out that the PowerPC has 128 bit AltiVEC registers. Just because a CPU has a few 128 bit registers does not make it a 128 bit CPU, you're an idiot. All you're doing now is trying to find the phrase "128 bit" and apply it to an entire architecture, which is completely ignorant.
The PS3 has a IBM CBE which is a hybrid 32/64 bit chip and the XBOX360 has a triple core PowerPC based on the CBE, also 32/64 bit.
And regardless, you can't measure an entire console on bits, all consoles have various buses of varying widths, with different co-processors again with different bus widths. Not taking into account the register widths and other things.
@cant1rac Hate to tell you, but you're an idiot. First of all, they're 68000s, not 6800s, they're two completely different CPUs. Second, its a 68EC000, not a '68ce00". Third, the 68EC000 is the microcontroller version of the 68000, not "enhanced". The 68EC000 is a stripped down 68000 to make it cheaper; They removed features from it to make it cheaper.
@cant1rac And you can't judge hardware by the software that runs on it. Doom is about the worst example you can use because nobody that ported it to consoles gave two shits about optimizing it, therefore it ran like crap.
is it fair to compare an unreleased (unfinsihed final product) with a released title?
this is not a like with like comparision
if rayman, doom or any other multi platform released game is compared to the jag.
im afraid the jag has the better version.
the only one that can come equal is doom on the playstation.
where the jag game play is slightly faster and more fluid but dosent have ultimate doom levels or doom 2 (cause they hadnt been released yet) ps version is more complete collection! draw
Sega CD was 24-bit. It's hardware is based off the System 24 arcade board which is basically a System 16 with added BIOS and new smooth textured sprites. The Jaguar really wasn't 64 bit. It was designed with 2 16-bit processors to allow 32-bit textures and one 8 bit processor for sound. Come to think of it, most Jaguar were no different from PSX. In fact the Saturn was 3X more powerful then the Jaguar since it had two 32 bit processors.
The Sega CD doesn't have any video processing chips, it uses either the Megadrive's VDP or the 32X VDP or both. It wasn't based of the system 24 or 16.
The 68000 CPU on the Sega CD is a 32 bit processor with a 16 bit data bus and 24 bit address bus.
Oh Dear you seem to have got yourself somewhat confused
The Jaguar is NOT based on 2 16bit processors + an 8bit for sound
The Jaguar is actually based on
64bit BUS
64bit Object Processor( basically a sprite proc)
64bit blitter (pixel drawing/copying proc)
32bit RISC GPU (general proc)
32bit RISC DSP (General Proc)
and a 68000 (32/16bit) processor intended for system management but at the time used for too much meaning that the console too often behaved as a 16bit system.
Oh and don't start talking for polygons and cinematics and crap! I want game exaples! For SEGA CD I have tons of good games to mention. For Jaguar only beta 32 bit era games... The actual 32 bit games came with SEGA Saturn and Playstation. If you compare these consoles with Jaguar you will start laughing!
There is no comparison guys! Don't be stupid fanboys! I own Jaguar and ok it has about 5-6 good games only. SEGA CD is a million light years better! Just see and count the games.. As the Jaguar commercial said DO THE MATH.. but this time the math so another winner!
i found a pirated copy of soul star on jag and a weird cd tht has 10 games.....it was only 20 bucks with the system,cd hookup,2 controllers and a total of 15 games...guess the person who sold it didnt like it....the AVP game was pretty good
and i got a sega cd with a 32x and a model 2 genesis with 5 games for each....only 30 bucks yea my old genesis broke
jaguar soul star was better bcuz of gameplay and the genesis was cool cuz of the 2 player mode so theyre tied both pretty good
I consider myself a Sega fanboy, but I have to admit, the Jaguar obviously had better graphics than the Genesis.
I also consider myself a graphics whore and I can instantly distinguish between which set looks better. The jaguar was actually pushing I'd say close to 100 polygons or more. The Genesis was pushing closer to 25.
Yeah, but the Sega CD isn't shaped like a toilet. It wins. I'm with the Angry Nintendo Nerd for taking a dump on the Jaguar CD -- it just asks for it every time you lift the lid to change games.
It's too bad, too -- if they had released this game, maybe Jag CD would have gotten ONE decent game on it, as opposed to the very few good games the Sega CD got.
Back in the day when I first had my Sega CD I owned a very small number of Sega CD games. Soul Star was one of them, and while it wasn't amazing, it was entertaining. One of the features I really liked was the two-player mode where, rather than cramming two ships on the screen, the game let you play together as pilot and gunner. My little brother was horrid at flying, but he made a great gunner. It was one of the few games he and I could play together for more than a half-hour without fighting.
Right... because I personally didn't like any other games, that AUTOMATICALLY means I've never played either system. Yeah. Good logic. No proof, all speculation... that's a great system, maybe doctors should start using that method of thinking.
Right so your telling me you never liked Mortal Kombat, Final fight, and the Lunar series? So you just got it for sonic right? Your calling me an idiot when you pay over 150 dollars for an add on to play one game? Sounds pretty stupid. Thats like me paying 150 dollars for modern warfare 2 when it only cost 80 for my limited edition....................dumbass
First of all, I never said I bought either system, did I? That's your first fail. Next, I never said I didn't PLAY any other games for it, did I? That's your second fail. And lastly, any of the other games I DID like for the system, were on other cheaper systems and were just as good (if not better), so that's your third fail.
Bonus fail: trying to call me a "dumb-ass" and completely spelling it wrong. If you're going to insult someone's intelligence, it helps not to be an idiot first ;) FAIL.
the sega cd was a 16bit system but it could be upgraded to a 32bit system, thanks the 32x, but only a few cd 32x games were released, wich require bough the 32x,the sega cd and the genesis itself to put the addons on it,so it was very inpracticle!!!!!!
lol they both suck but you are compareing a 16 bit sistem with a plus to a 64 bit sistem (horribly designed) with a plus... plus i bet sege version is more fun, sega owned...
You see that the Jaguar version definately has more colors, even in gameplay... that´s not difficult as the Sega CD has... 16... or was there an enhancement to the Genesis due to the CD? I guess not... But anyway they are similar as I bet that the Jaguar version simply is a motorola 68000 game as mots Jaguar games were and the Sega Genesis also had a 68000, but a slower one! Beside that a great game on both machines, unfortunately the Jaguar version isn´t finished :(
Sega CD has some great games, only problem was how they insisted in marketing stupidly boring and choppy FMV instead of great titles like Shining Force CD, Lunar 1 & 2, Eternal Champions CD, ETC. The Jaguar was a failure because it was totally rushed and had dual processors Tom & Jerry that were overly complicated to code for and buggy as hell. I grew up playing the 2600 and really wanted Atari to come back only to get the absolute disappointment the Jaguar ended up being.
This isnt a fair compairson, its a video cut scenes that were pre rendered differently (Poser and Bryce) I know there seems to be more graphics in the Jaguar, but cutscenes shouldnt count. Only till the end we can see the gameplay and it looks nearly the same..
go jaguar its a good system just people look at it in a weird way they have okay graphics a cool coontroller and good games iron siolder alien vs predator and tempist 2000 also the gameplay is swell and gamers love it then there comes the sega cd tthe graphics are good and the gameplay was sick unless if the games your plaing are the ninteractive movies but sonic cd was good. and the real gammers that actually played the systems know what there talking about and if you havent u dont. GO JAGUAR
The Jaguar was 64-bit. It had an odd configuration of processors that made it 64-bit. If you wanted to get technical you could say it was 32bit, but still more powerful than the Sega CD. It just had no software support and it's risk processors were buggy and hard to develop for. I personally love my Sega CD more than my Jaguar, but it's not my Jaguar's fault for sucking... It's like a genius child stuck in a small town full of retarded rednecks. He has potential, but will never develop.
it IS 32-Bits... Only a 64-Bit GPU rendered it a 64-Bit system. It is more powerful than the Sega CD, (it had the same CPU, but faster).
What lead to it's downfall was the sytem was problematic to develop for. That, and along with no software developers to back it up,
Tha Jaguar is a great console (to my mind), shame it was deemed a failure. What would have made it great if the system wasent buggy and faulty, (with decent games to back it up) this would have sold well.
Too true. See, now if developers put times into developing games for it, the Jaguar would have sold by the buckets.
Think about it though. A system which was the first of it's kind for a rather cheap $250 and it was probably the first console that offered full 3D capablities (side 3DO, but that was a piece of turd for it's large price tag... $700!? A Playstation 3 costs and a Playstation 2 combined!) and a price that appealed. I personally blame lazy developers for bringing this system down.
hi , I have just bought an unused still boxed etc Jaguar and only have cybermorph ,kasumi ninja, and DOOM , can you recomened any other titles to check out? I like driving & fps ,& side scrollin shooters (IE r-type style) btw where did you get your Unreleased Atari Jaguar CD version of Soul Star.? cheers & interesting vid,:-)

ok the first part we can ignore, the rest off it is a grown up argument.
my whole point was not on doom in it self. got side tracked, ok.
i recognised i got the motorola chip model wrong, and i posted that.
my point was a title that is a beta unreleased game should not be compared with a released title.
an unfair comparision, you should take a title released for both machines, like doom for the saturn and doom for the jaguar, rayman for the ps and jag.
im prepared to discuss without insults
cant1rac 1 year ago
@cant1rac I apologize for being an ass, it's a personality flaw of mine that I have a hard time coming to terms with.
The Sega Saturn is hard to program because of the way the SH2s are setup. They share a narrow bus with several other devices, which leads to bus saturation. Without precise timing from skilled programming, using both CPUs at the same time is nearly impossible. Most games usually just ran off one SH2 and disabled the other.

cant1rac 1 year ago
doom is the best comparision.
was the most anitisipated game of its time.
each consule strived to get the best version.
every consule, except the jaguar and playstation failed.
is every other consules version poor optimisation? (snes, 32x, 3do, sega saturn) or is it just an easy excuse ?
where jaguar failed was its homebrewed games like clubdrive, kasumi ninja, cybermorph and checkered flag
was only saying its fairer to compare same released titles and not against an unreleased beta
cant1rac 1 year ago
@cant1rac Where are you getting this blasphemous misinformation? Doom was released in Dec. of 1993, the jaguar in "late" 1994 and the PS in Nov. 1995. I don't think anyone was anticipating a game that had been released a year or two prior, and how would two consoles war that didn't exist at the same time?
The Jaguar was a disaster for Atari, its overcomplexity made it a burden to program, combined with weak 3rd party support and heavy competition. it was basically dead when it hit the market.
GGigabiteM 1 year ago
@GGigabiteM agree with u on why the jaguar died. but i bought doom mid 94 and my ps copy says 96.
again a beta unreleased copy of soulstar compared with a released copy, all i was saying is an unfair comparison.
a released game comparision on both platforms is fair, doom vs doom, rayman vs rayman
again, talk to me without name calling im willing, and willing to admit when ive posted mistakes like the motorola chip
cant1rac 1 year ago
@cant1rac You also don't seem to understand that not all game manufacturers care about quality games, especially back in the dark ages then. Like the Jaguar, the SegaCD and Saturn were inherently complex to program. Instead of developers taking their time to port and optimize, they took massive shortcuts, like only utilizing half of the console's processing power, thereby reducing the performance of the game. The less money they spent and the quicker they got the product out the door, the better
GGigabiteM 1 year ago
i admit when i have posted wrong info.
you are correct in the model number of the motorola chip, but your attitude stinks.
a civil attitude and i will correct any errors i make.
feel free to correct me.
but dont call people idiots and start flinging insults, its childish.
may i note that i was not talking about emulation, makes the job of porting a game easier if their is similar hardware to be utilised in a machine.
never said raw megadrive code was being used.
cant1rac 1 year ago
@cant1rac I only call people idiots that genuinely deserve it. All you've been posting is poorly typed crap information touting you know everything about all consoles, when you clearly know nothing.
THERE IS NO SIMILAR HARDWARE BETWEEN THE MEGADRIVE AND SATURN. The 68EC000 is NOT a 68000, they are vastly different on how they perform.

its a motorola chips in both the jag and the saturn and the difficulty in programming their custom multiple proccesor, 6800 in jaguar used as a manager and the 68ce00 used in saturn, used for sound along with the yamaha chip ment they could run megadrive developed programms with little adaption, many software developer since the megadrive and snes were still big sellers, just ported the mega cd version.
sol feace is a good example of this..since its obvious its origin on the jaguar
cant1rac 1 year ago
@cant1rac Again, you have no idea what you're talking about. The 68EC000 is not a full 68000, and the Saturn VDP and memory mapping are vastly different than the Megadrive. The Saturn doesn't even have a Z80, and the Yamaha sound chip is completely different. You aren't going to "adapt" a Megadrive game to run on a Saturn, it's impossible. The only way a Megadrive game would run on a Saturn is if you emulated it, and that would be piss slow.
GGigabiteM 1 year ago
Sega saturn does have a motorola chip 68ec00 its was used for sound, but could use code with a little adaption easily programmed for the sega megadrive and the yamaha fh1 proccesor used for sound.. hence why despite the saturns large capasity.. alot of platform and space shooter titles, that were little more than enhanced mega cd games disgraced the platform, the atari jag had a motorola chip used as a manager, and suffered the same fate off too many inferiour 16 bit titles (i own both machines)

@mikeshredder233 to be honest, although as a technicality the jag is 64 bit, it's not true 64 bit , the jaguar was more of a mash up of 5 processors and VDU's , meaning that the overall speed of the machine would be as slow as the slowest part seeing as everything will scale down as such Meaning that it really only had about 26.5 MHZ on it

sregor913 2 years ago
Both were good ideas back in their time.Imo The Jaguar was most defintley not 64-bit i would consider it an Nes with a 32-bit processor. If I remember correctly the Sega CD was basically 16 bit with an Arcade processor similar to that of the Saturn. The 32X was just the same thing with an added processor to make more polygons. i can name alot of great games for both systems
amari2001 2 years ago
You have no idea what you're talking about. The NES had a customized 8 bit 6502 derived processor made by Ricoh. The Sega CD has a 12.5 MHz 68000, which is technically a 32 bit CPU with 16/24 bit data/address buses.
The 32x has dual Hitachi SH2s at 23.5 MHz with a custom 15 bit VDP. The VDP on the MD is incapable of rendering polygons and the SCD doesn't have a VDP, just a CPU and some sound processors.
GGigabiteM 2 years ago 2
Your funny..I wasnt being exact with my information Im just saying in my experience what its capabilities technically are.Didn't I say the Sega CD was pretty much the same processor as the Sega Saturn which was 32-bit? I dont need all the technical information about stuff I know or can look up easily...
amari2001 2 years ago
No, the Sega CD doesn't have the same processor as the Sega Saturn. The Sega CD has a Motorola 68000 @ 12.5 MHz, the Sega Saturn has 2 x Hitachi SH2 @ 28.7 MHz.
They couldn't be more different. You weren't being "exact", you were being grossly "wrong".

Yes there was a lot of garbage on it, but not enough to dismiss it like you and other smarmy types.
cuttock 1 year ago
@cuttock
GGigabiteM 1 year ago
@GGigabiteM The Saturn design, with two CPUs and 6 other processors, made it extremely difficult to get the absoulute maximum performance out of the console. The parallel design was too complex for many game developers.
INNERVOICExx36 1 year ago
@INNERVOICExx36
GGigabiteM 1 year ago
@GGigabiteM If they would have worked with it, over time games would have looked a lot better but also if you see what PS1 had, games looked like ass on it. I seen this game running on a TV at a game stop before PS2 or deamcast were even talked about. The game looked at the time, the best looking game I had ever seen.. It was running of the Saturn. It was the only game running the system at it's full power and it looked 128 mb. I have no idea what that game was.
INNERVOICExx36 1 year ago
@INNERVOICExx36
GGigabiteM 1 year ago

Just like the PS3 but the PS3 has 256 mb of ram for it's NV chip but can also use 128 more if needed and it needs it. I also can tell you that Yes you can find CPU's that are 128 bit... Ass.
GGigabiteM 1 year ago
@GGigabiteM The 360 will use up to 480 of it's mem for video or it's games to run I should say. The PS3 will use 128 for the CPU and other things running in the background. The PS3 will use up to 384 to run games. Well not to run games but that is the total mem is has for video. The 360 has the over head with mem but really, it is all about what the dev's do with it. Now the CPU for the PS3 can give up 128 and use it for the GPU. That is how you get 384. I got a friend who works for Bio.. :)
INNERVOICExx36 1 year ago

GGigabiteM 1 year ago
@INNERVOICExx36
Not taking into account the register widths and other things.

hate to tell u but your completely wrong.
saturn has a motorola 68ce (an enhanced 6800) linked to its yamaha sound chip and 2 hitachi proccesors.
the jag has 2 64bit gpu's on a 64bit bus, with 2 32bit cpus and a motorola 6800 as a controller chip.

this is just a sega cd port for jaguar....using the motorola chip and not a reflection of the jaguar.
why not have used doom as a comparision?
i know the answer.
the jag version wins, where the saturn is slower and lags
cant1rac 1 year ago
@cant1rac Hate to tell you, but you're an idiot. First of all, they're 68000s, not 6800s, they're two completely different CPUs. Second, its a 68EC000, not a '68ce00". Third, the 68EC000 is the microcontroller version of the 68000, not "enhanced". The 68EC000 is a stripped down 68000 to make it cheaper; They removed features from it to make it cheaper.
GGigabiteM 1 year ago
@cant1rac And you can't judge hardware by the software that runs on it. Doom is about the worst example you can use because nobody that ported it to consoles gave two shits about optimizing it, therefore it ran like crap.

Sega CD was actually 24 bits.
Cruzito420 2 years ago 2
Sega CD was 24-bit. It's hardware is based off the System 24 arcade board which is basically a System 16 with added BIOS and new smooth textured sprites. The Jaguar really wasn't 64 bit. It was designed with 2 16-bit processors to allow 32-bit textures and one 8 bit processor for sound. Come to think of it, most Jaguar were no different from PSX. In fact the Saturn was 3X more powerful then the Jaguar since it had two 32 bit processors.
Tornado1994 2 years ago
The Sega CD doesn't have any video processing chips, it uses either the Megadrive's VDP or the 32X VDP or both. It wasn't based of the system 24 or 16.
The 68000 CPU on the Sega CD is a 32 bit processor with a 16 bit data bus and 24 bit address bus.
GGigabiteM 2 years ago

If you compare these consoles with Jaguar you will start laughing!
sybnios 2 years ago
There is no comparison guys! Don't be stupid fanboys! I own Jaguar and ok it has about 5-6 good games only. SEGA CD is a million light years better! Just see and count the games.. As the Jaguar commercial said DO THE MATH.. but this time the math so another winner!

i found a pirated copy of soul star on jag and a weird cd tht has 10 games.....it was only 20 bucks with the system,cd hookup,2 controllers and a total of 15 games...guess the person who sold it didnt like it....the AVP game was pretty good
and i got a sega cd with a 32x and a model 2 genesis with 5 games for each....only 30 bucks yea my old genesis broke
jaguar soul star was better bcuz of gameplay and the genesis was cool cuz of the 2 player mode so theyre tied both pretty good
darklight675 2 years ago
all these fanboy noobs cant even analyze anything honestly. The Jaguar version had better presentation and graphics. It wins.
To the morons saying the Jaguar CD didn't work - A. MINE did, and B. appearently the person who made this video - theirs did too.
CrudOMatic 2 years ago
I consider myself a Sega fanboy, but I have to admit, the Jaguar obviously had better graphics than the Genesis.
I also consider myself a graphics whore and I can instantly distinguish between which set looks better. The jaguar was actually pushing I'd say close to 100 polygons or more. The Genesis was pushing closer to 25.
Britishdude1 2 years ago 2
Yeah, but the Sega CD isn't shaped like a toilet. It wins. I'm with the Angry Nintendo Nerd for taking a dump on the Jaguar CD -- it just asks for it every time you lift the lid to change games.
It's too bad, too -- if they had released this game, maybe Jag CD would have gotten ONE decent game on it, as opposed to the very few good games the Sega CD got.
galathonredd 2 years ago
This comparison dies a death the minute you mention the game was unrelease on the Atari Jaguar CD...
mattyrb 2 years ago
Back in the day when I first had my Sega CD I owned a very small number of Sega CD games. Soul Star was one of them, and while it wasn't amazing, it was entertaining. One of the features I really liked was the two-player mode where, rather than cramming two ships on the screen, the game let you play together as pilot and gunner. My little brother was horrid at flying, but he made a great gunner. It was one of the few games he and I could play together for more than a half-hour without fighting.

Both systems were garbage, along with the 32X as well. HORRIBLE. Sonic CD was the only decent game.
bennymdavis 2 years ago 3
please you never really played a sega cd let alone owned one otherwise you would of known of other games. same with 32x.
32v2v 2 years ago 5
Right... because I personally didn't like any other games, that AUTOMATICALLY means I've never played either system. Yeah. Good logic. No proof, all speculation... that's a great system, maybe doctors should start using that method of thinking.
Idiot.
bennymdavis 2 years ago
Right so your telling me you never liked Mortal Kombat, Final fight, and the Lunar series? So you just got it for sonic right? Your calling me an idiot when you pay over 150 dollars for an add on to play one game? Sounds pretty stupid. Thats like me paying 150 dollars for modern warfare 2 when it only cost 80 for my limited edition....................dumbass
32v2v 2 years ago

Only till the end we can see the gameplay and it looks nearly the same..
knuxte465 2 years ago
go jaguar its a good system just people look at it in a weird way they have okay graphics a cool coontroller and good games iron siolder alien vs predator and tempist 2000 also the gameplay is swell and gamers love it then there comes the sega cd tthe graphics are good and the gameplay was sick unless if the games your plaing are the ninteractive movies but sonic cd was good. and the real gammers that actually played the systems know what there talking about and if you havent u dont. GO JAGUAR

sega CD CPU is much complex and the jaguars 16 bit
kombUl 2 years ago
The Jaguar was 64-bit. It had an odd configuration of processors that made it 64-bit. If you wanted to get technical you could say it was 32bit, but still more powerful than the Sega CD. It just had no software support and it's risk processors were buggy and hard to develop for. I personally love my Sega CD more than my Jaguar, but it's not my Jaguar's fault for sucking... It's like a genius child stuck in a small town full of retarded rednecks. He has potential, but will never develop.
RunandGunPictures 2 years ago 5
it IS 32-Bits...
RollinRolex 2 years ago
And don't forget the Playstation which came out 1995 with much more games and a better control pad.
Yea, the Jaguar was and still is a great console, the circumstances it was released under were the main reason for its failure.
I'd like to own a jag too, but sadly their price on ebay is often around 100 bucks...
Ap0ske 2 years ago

My friend, the Jaguar has two 32-bit processors. But, anyways, the Jaguar doesn't impress at all here.
