I am not a metal drummer, but have never been happy with my Samba on the bass drum. I either just "don't have it" that day, or tire out quickly and have to switch to a modified bass pattern. But using this "heal toe" tech is wonderful!
The downside is I fee like I need to relearn everything all over again! My instinct is to lead with the toe, but I need to relearn to lead with my HEEL in time...and it is HELL! I feel like a noob again! But once I get the coordination down it'll be sweet!
Lol my feet are to big for my shitty yamaha single pedal to do this. Cause my toes hit the upper side of the pedal "fixture" Should i perhaps lower the foot pedal? Im a total drum newb and know shit about how to play or set up your kit so all help is apriciated :)
@HastOsth Watch Jared Falk's explanation. You can do it with snowboards boots with your heel hitting the carpet (way behind the board). You can do it with size 20 if you want, size has nothing to do with heel toe. Spikey drummer's video about pedal set up can help.
@Poulmy LoooL... Best tip ever, got it down after a silly 5 minutes! Ty so much Poulmy and Jared Falk, this technique is super easy... I thought the motion vas coming from the heal but instead its more toe toe... Well for all you noobs out there (like me) check Jared Falks Vid he makes it so easy!
@HastOsth haha you're welcome :) And Jared Falk got a lot of vids about the heel toe (last one is 17 minutes long, it's where he tried it with different shoes). I still a heel toe noob too because I've been doing it for a long time with my right foot but my left foot is stupid haha (so obviously I can't do long double bass heel toe)... I'm typing this as I rest a little my left foot : practice ALL day ! :)
I'm an amateur lefty drummer, but I was just curious if that has anything to do with which foot I should NATURALLY be playing with? When I started, I got a hang of the bass drum kicking on my own with my right foot, but I seem to catch on with this trick more easily with my left. Should I just do whatever I find more comfortable?
@Gravelrally1 If you're right handed (and footed) it would obviously be normal to do with your right foot, but if you find it easier to do it with your left then go for it. Doesn't that mean you have to switch the whole kit around the lefty way though?
@SebbeSucksBawlz Problem is I had my drumkit switched around the lefty way but in the music club, I gotta leave their drums in righty position... kinda seems inefficient for me to learn my own style so I just taught myself to play with the setup for the righties :L
actually it took me alot of time to get the basic moving for the heel toe but after that its really suprising simple. im still working on bringing this into a constant double base pattern... left foot still sounds crappy
me and alot of my mates can do all these techniques. . . heal toe is not easy.
yes i can do it and most people probably can aswell. but heal up is by far the easyest way. or even the slide technique.
heal toe is the hardest to master because how ever long people have been playing using heal toe they still never get the beats sounding the same or even on time in most cases...
This is not the real heel toe technique! Only effective if you have very small feet (to hit with heel on pedal) and you can't accent the second stroke, which is meaning of this for jazz samba drums first!
See a lesson with photos on my website or Dave Weckl's video "Back to basics".
It is inefficient to hit far from the chain (close to rotation axis). Heel toe technique is not that! It is accenting the second stroke with heel up (tip and entire leg). It's a jazz samba technique! See Virgil Donati doing awesome double stroke roll with feet (speedy and powerful) with the technique that I describe (and all great drummers: Steve Gadd, Dennis Chambers, Thomas Lang, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Akira Jimbo, Bonham, Carmine Appice, Terrana ......). Let's be aware!
I don't give a shit about what anyone says about foot / footboard sizes, you have to be able to put your heels in front of the hinge to do this technique.
Hi ,nice video. So why is the heel toe technique required in the first place?Isnt a heel up technique good enough? I have just started and feel pretty good with heel up. Does heel-toe save energy or something? Thanks in advance.
cool guy. :D btw. you said, its possible on any drum pedal. but i noticed that on mine, i dont get the pedal to hit the drum with the heel. or at least i gotta come up with a lot of power, which takes time obviously, which is bad when it comes to speed obviously. am i just doin it wrong, orr is it not possible on any pedal?
FINALLY GOT IT AFTER ONE MONTH OF PRACTICE! Thanks Derrick. Drummers, he's right...once you get this you'll laugh at how easy it really is. Stick with it till you get it!
well, i can tell that drummers with big feet will have their problems playing it like derrick.. that´s the reason why some famous drummers´slip to the side when doing that technic. because the foodboard is to small! .
i have the iron cobras (maybe large enough for your small japanese drummers;-), the dw models and the axis longboard, but even with those it´s not possible to keep straight on the pedal for "big-foot-drummers" !
i have a tama iron cobra and i get like how to do it but i have a fricken size 13 and a half foot so its hard for big feet people joey jordison like a size 9
what your saying heel toe drumming is conflicts with what i've heard and seen. what your saying seems to relying on the pedal and the size of your foot way too much,
...and nothing will replace just being able to do doubles in the classic manner for the sake of linear fills. Going fast is cool, but learn the fundamentals, too.
With larger feet, it really does become a lot harder on regular footboards. I know from experience that this is ridiculously easy on the Axis Longboard, but on a normal-sized pedal, it's a lot more strenuous.
The problem becomes that your heel runs off the end of the footboard, so it doesn't do anything. Solutions may include moving the impact area up toward the middle of your foot or scooting your foot forward as much as possible and sliding backward as you hit.
@MetalOperations it's deffinitely not. i have DW9000's, their board is one of the shortest, if not THE shortest board i've played on, and i only have size 9 [usa 10] but i can take my whole foot off, and just keep my little toe on the size of the board and still do heel toe. it's not the size of the boat, it's the motion in the ocean ;D
@MetalOperations i'm from england. people swim from here to france ;D
kidding. but yeah i get you. but i can play BLEED by meshuggah with a tiny part of my foot on the board. /watch?v=20sZzniElkU that's a guy using DW's using heel toe and playing bleed with only half of his foot on the board.
@TehSeanRadcliffe You can actually do it with half the foot off the board as the heel isn't actually the first stroke. If you watch this video, as he speeds up, you will see the heel isn't making the stroke although, the motion is the same.
@woojyee i know you can. i have DW9000's[really short board] and i can do it with just my little toe on the side of the pedal, aslong as the motion is there.
-it's not about the size of the boat, it's the motion in the ocean. :]
@jakelikestodrum Actually It's more or less technique. I've got size 12 feet (So my toes are right up against the chains on my Eliminators just to get my heel on board). I've found a nice way around this is to take a lesson from Jared Falk -- in which your foot is halfway up the board, but instead of using your heel for the second stroke, you stomp your heel into the ground and flick your foot forward again. It actually works if you have big feet.
Heel toe is what I have done for 20 years. Never learned it. Just sort of happened. Easy way to simulate double bass sound. a double with the primary foot coupled with a single on the secondary foot is a great way to play triplets on bass drum.
I can sometimes do heel-toe, but overall I SUCK at it! Does the spring tension for the pedals have anything to do with it? And I might try the constant release thing. \m/(>.<)\m/
Thank you for putting this up. You showed me a new technique that all of my favorite punk drummers use, as opposed to using double bass. And you were right, it is really easy, was able to use it with only one day of practice. now all I have to do is work up the muscle to sustain playing heel-toe. But Thanks!
@punkska438 When I used to listen to punk in the 90s, most of the drummers I saw were doing it heel up, which is how I always did it... I dunno if they all use heel toe now though ;)
But one question. I've been playing rock style drums and I'm hoping to end up playing some sort of death metal drums, but I've always played heels down and it's served me well. Would I be better off playing heels up?
Wow, ever since my band teacher had a day in Jazz Band be a day where he plays the drums the entire class, I've wanted to know how to do this. This video was incredible, and I thought the snare stuff at the beginning was pretty good!
I've seen a lot of different opinions on whether or not you should keep the beater on the drum head. You do, but I heard that on acoustic drums it muffles the sound? What's correct?
It's wrong the way he teaches it... But he comes close though. The idea is to drop the whole foot on the footboard (both heel and toe) for the first stroke, and have the toes to make the second stroke. When you're up to speed enough you'll actually find the footboard kinda bouncing underneath you foot between the whole foot and the second stroke, just like in the vid at 7:32. You'll see that the board touches the toes, bounces down and then he does the toe stroke... Jared Falk's good at this too
@jwgx16 i agree, it was pretty dirty. just giving you a piece of advice, check out the meoller technique. i'm still improving on it and it will help you a lot!
@Necroparanoia dont try and get a first hit with your heel, you're not supposed to. the heel drop doesnt actually produce a sound. both hits are produced from the rocking motion forward.
Then this might not be the right technique for you man ! There is several techniques like :heel toe, heel up, heel down, swivel... You must the one you are most comfortable with and then practice a fucking lot ! :D
Thanks for great vid man! I've received this challenge, that I'll have to learn to play drums within the end of august, including the heel-toe-methode. You think I can do it? xD
Thank you, you have helped me a lot in heel toe techniques, i am comfortable with that technique, as it is the easiest. now its my left foot, i have to start from scratch.
i would learn all the basic rudiments and be able to play them with both feet and hands, but everything should be done in creativity. and your heel toe is very sloppy. it sounds uneven. it should sound smooth and consistent
I have iron cobras and i learnt heel toe on them, if you drop the foot board down as low as itl go without hitting the base plate or anything and turn your feet inward slightly it works fine.. unless you have huge feet, then your screwed =)
great vid man, really helpful, i been heal down since i started playing because there is like one drummer in a 5 billion mile radius of me and thats his style, so i am stuck with it and i have been struggling to change out my ways for a heal up technique. and of course heal toe. so this helps loads, thanks man, xx
Do i have to tight my Pedal much or not? Well, thats my biggest problem at hell-toe at the moment :(

When you're up to speed enough you'll actually find the footboard kinda bouncing underneath you foot between the whole foot and the second stroke, just like in the vid at 7:32. You'll see that the board touches the toes, bounces down and then he does the toe stroke... Jared Falk's good at this too

Necroparanoia 8 months ago 51
@Necroparanoia just keep on trying, it's easy once you get the hang of it
Modderriffic 7 months ago
@Necroparanoia dont try and get a first hit with your heel, you're not supposed to. the heel drop doesnt actually produce a sound. both hits are produced from the rocking motion forward.
SuperCoolDomino 7 months ago
@Necroparanoia then you suck at drumming i got it instantly

The way you're teaching it, heel-toe can't be done on any pedal with any shoe size, but the right way to do it you can.
astronomicat 8 months ago
I'm getting that pedal tomorrow :) (not because he does heel toe on it)
Therysinx 8 months ago
I didn't laugh but heel toe is pretty easy. Thanks for the help

Thank you, you have helped me a lot in heel toe techniques, i am comfortable with that technique, as it is the easiest. now its my left foot, i have to start from scratch.
keanxd96 10 months ago
umm thats not the most correct heel toe, can also do the technique with out your heel actually hitting the foot board.....look up jared falk heel-toe
imacoollikedat 10 months ago
@imacoollikedat
To be honest, you're right.
Jared Falk's is the actual heel-toe method you can do with every kind of footboard,
and every foot size. But this is a bit like the easy version, let's call it the "dummy"
version, and good to learn first if you haven't got shoe size 11 (;

THEentropyMaker 10 months ago
i would learn all the basic rudiments and be able to play them with both feet and hands, but everything should be done in creativity. and your heel toe is very sloppy. it sounds uneven. it should sound smooth and consistent
MrBKreeves 10 months ago
Man, this was awesome, I always concentrated on hand techniques but this video !! Awesome! Im gonna go practicing it now!

I have iron cobras and i learnt heel toe on them, if you drop the foot board down as low as itl go without hitting the base plate or anything and turn your feet inward slightly it works fine.. unless you have huge feet, then your screwed =)
StallionDuck24 10 months ago
Dude, just so you know... as far as I can tell, the heel toe method doesn't work on an Iron cobra pedal.
BladeDemon13 10 months ago
great vid man, really helpful, i been heal down since i started playing because there is like one drummer in a 5 billion mile radius of me and thats his style, so i am stuck with it and i have been struggling to change out my ways for a heal up technique. and of course heal toe. so this helps loads, thanks man, xx
mitchelsmart 10 months ago
Ahh bs, good drummers develop this naturally. The name is just bs
FlipstaGIB 11 months ago
It does work if your foot is twice as long as the pedal. Just keep doing it until you find that sweet spot
