I just wanna say to those arguing about the realism factor, I'm not going to Afghanistan and fight a war just to get that "real" feeling. I'm not gonna run around and shoot my neighbors. We do airsoft, but sometimes you can't. nerf, airsoft, and paintball are good but don't compare well enough and aren't as environmentally friendly. I can play this everywhere.
I play games A LOT. and paintball A LOT. I'm a skilled tactician too. I coordinate strategies in video games.
ARMA is the real deal. This isn't some kids' toy like Call of Duty, it's a realistic military simulation with huge, free roam terrain, true ballistics simulation, tons of actions and capabilities, all sorts of vehicles and weapons and much more. Plus you can make your own sophisticated missions and mod the hell out of it. It's tough to learn, but so are real combat tactics! If you want to run around an arena with guns blazing and see cheap explosions, stick to kids' games like CoD. ARMA FTW! :)

There are few in existence, and I only found out ARMA existed about a year and a half ago. Finding it was like a godsend. Now I'm exposing all my friends to it, and they love it too! FPS fans love realism! :)
Sure there are soldiers who don't like ARMA... and there are also soldiers who are vegetarians, or hate rock music. So not sure where that point was going...

@tastefulavenger That's not necessarily true at all... Zelda? Fantasy... A WWII shooter? Realism... It depends on the game. It's just like watching a movie. When you're watching Lord of the Rings, you want to see magic, mythical creatures, etc... But if Gandalf showed up in a war movie, I'm sure you'd more than raise an eyebrow at it. Gaming is intended to let one experience something... and that may be a fantasy world, or parallel to the real world.

A simulator is close to real-life as it can get but it still isnt reality close to a fantasy of what real life soliders go through but nothing is like a real life experience like being fired apon in a video game is no where near as heart racing as it is in real life. My view is its nice they try to capture the realism of a military personal but its still only a game.

As a first look it looks amasing!
I might be finding the movement keys a little un-intuitive - for example to go from standing, to crouch, to prone, it would be handy to just have two buttons - one for raise pose, one for lower the characters pose.
One day I'll design a proper gamepad for the left hand to control movement without running out of keys!
In the mean time, I think I'm going to REALLY like this game!!!

I like how some features from addons for arma were implemented in arma2.
but... in SLX mod you were able to drag injured or dead soldier.. but in arma2 thats rare to get injured like that you are dead most time. And you was able to bleed out when you are injured so you need some1 to help you and give a 1st aid. Playing like that in multiplayer was really great ( arma 1 + slx )
tho as i said.. in arma 2 you are just dead most time..
Great game. I love how people play games like Call of Duty and are like "Oh, this game is so realistic!" and then they try playing ArmA 2 and can't even get a kill. Then they whine, quit, and we all move on with our lives. Lol anyway, you guys did a great job with this game, and I look forward to seeing what you are going to do in the future.
I can only hope for a game with half of ArmA 2's ambition on consoles, until I get a better PC my PS3 is where I do my current generation gaming. At least I can still play ArmA: Armed Assault smoothly on my computer until then (: It's a shame Bohemia Interactive isn't a massive incredibly rich team, because I'd love to see them craft a game based on any number of historical conflicts, realism in military-themed games is unfortunately lacking in the industry.
@ThatDuderino Definitely. With games like Call of Duty and Halo taking priority for most gamers, the military simulators lose a lot of money. And then Call of Duty keeps making these outrageous jumps, and they keep taking away any bit of realism possible in the game.
1ST AND 3RD VIEW? PHENOMENAL!!! When is a developer like this going to go back and reverse engineer Socom 1 or Socom 2 for the PS3? The current development team keeps giving the game a complete overhaul. Watch my channel and look at all the desperate diehards that used to play the shit out of those old games. @pikkupaska81 Go to infantry controls in game options, and set the "Raise weapon" control to a button you like. I have mine as the 'Home' key. That let's you relax and lower your weapon.

I bought this game today on steam, but the controls are insane. I don't even know if I'll play the game at all at this rate. There is a button for Prone, and another button for Go Prone....WTF? There are just dozens of vague, poorly described, superfluous and seemingly redundant commands. There is a damned Salute command. What the hell is going on with this game?
@032125 Hello, Arma 2 is not a classic FPS game. It´s complex military simulator with various options and possibilities. It allows almost all actions/activities you need as a soldier. I've downloaded the demo for ArmA 2, to see if I like the game, but the controls are a little confusing, and I really don't know how to do anything other than the basic controls, or how to drive. Plus there isn't many missions or things to do in the ArmA 2 demo, I still feel unsure about whether I want this game. The tutorials in the demo don't teach to many things either. (I don't even know how to text chat, I need help!)
@novaleafy send me a pm I'll help you out, demo is really not a great indicator of whats in the game, thats why its a demo, the missions in the demo are limited to what you get in the demo, in the full game, you can download missions or make your own, the editor is where its at. You would be seriously missing out on a game that has a versatility and vast community that it has. I dont think there is any other games that allow you to do what you can do in Arma, and Arma 2, the editor is the best!

next time Arrowhead goes on sale or I get some money I might get this thing. Arma 2 is a prety solid game thusfar and it's super in depth, the only thing it lacks really is 'gloss'. Gloss meaning well, the edges being smoothed: i.e. UI Streamlining, a bit better art direction and such to help bring it in to the standards of AAA titles as far as looks go. Possibly tweaking things here and there. Of course BIS is kind of like a bigger indie studio so these things can be accepted in context.
@90lpzjose How the fuck would this game run on a little xbox? Really, think about it. This game has a map thats like 100000 square miles. Tons of AI, weapons, vehicles. The xbox would kill its self trying to run it. Most computer have a hard time running it anyways.

Because of the high hardware requirements, this game is not even playable on most pcs, and will not run on consoles.
Also there is the 225 square kilometers map filled with AIs, which all have military tactics inside of their minds to fall back to, and they all communicate with eachother, the AI doesn't cheat by looking through walls for example.
And then there are lots of buttons required for this military simulation (no cod). And the big online support with mods.
what i don't like is the control setup, like why does it need to be z,x,c to change stance, why not space to go up and climb obstacles, and control to go down.
It's all about allocating resources and energy. BIS made a big deal about improving the AI, when it's obvious to anyone who's ever played online that the FUTURE holds NO AI at all. At the moment these maps are just TOO BIG to fill with human players, but that should be the GOAL. Trust me, if you had a map like Chernarus filled with Thousands of HUMAN players, the AI would simply go straight into the trash. So why are they wasting their energy and funds on improving the AI??
You are so totally right, and I agree completely. The future is infact complete player-run soldiers, because not only does AI have perfect aim, but the thing about fighting other humans, is it's generally easier to kill other humans compared to AI. Sandbox environments filled with real people would be amazing
I would suspect server lag to be increased due to the processing of the AI having to interact with all players on the map as well, and killing an AI character is rarely ever fun for me, unless, maybe, if its a zombie, in which i am perfectly satisfied with having lots of AI zombies around
like the developer said the maps are over 255km Square. I can run the game with every cranked up 8950 with no issues. I have the Game on 1024x768 Resolution and 1600 View distance which all you need anyways. If your having performance issues then your computer is probably outdated or you need tweak you graphic options. Anyways thanks for making the game Bohemia and I can't wait for Arrowhead to come out. Please check the graphic options. The map is actually 15x15km so for example in case your view distance is like 6-10km than you are moving with almost whole game mape of 225km square.
I don't what is happening. I tried to reinstall drivers and other things like that but it still works bad:( The worst thing is that the animation itself is fluent, but game has some problems with memory. How can it have problems with memory if I have 4GB RAM and 1GB on my video card??O.o
This game rocks. As with every version (OPF, ARMA) takes a while to get use to controls & find the best video settings.
A 9500 is a mid range 9 series and 2 years old. I put 1 in a home theater PC b/c it's quite/low power. A friend has a similar setup and runs fine w/ settings set at medium & high draw distance at ~2km.
I have a machine similar to the 1 used to for this vid and run fine with all but shadows at very high and draw at 3.8km.
In my case it works fine only when I drop with details to LOW:( I play in resolution 1440x900 and it still looks cool, but ... I'm not satisfied with these LOW settings. Especially when - in exampe - FAR CRY 2 and FALLOUT 3 work perfectly with everything on MAX and in the same 1440x900 resolution. Strange..

I got WIndows I7 (newer than vista), HDMI screen, an Xbox controller (infantry/vehicles) and a saitek X45 Joystick with footpedals (aircraft). With a great machine, this is a very realistic game, not meant for thoes who dont enjoy realizm, or with computers that need upgrading.

Don't be missled, thsi game is horible , only graphics are good, even with very low settings it still uses pixel shader as much as possible ,making it impossible to play for people with not newest ps's. 5 in this game and i allready notice 5 bugs , soldier was runing in place, a man speaking didn't move besides his mouth, soldier keeps screeming the same phrase and so on
This game IS really hard, but that's part of why I love it. It's about damn time someone got away from the super-kiddy-arcadey crap that's been shoved down our throats for so long. I happen to like a challenge thank you very much.
I don't agree because it's complete nonsense. The smartest game developers are the ones who can make a game that sells really well, it's as simple as that.
While it's all wonderful the way they talk, reality is that the controls of the game are overly complex and as a result the game will not reach a broad market, this in my opnion is from a marketing perspective simply poor development, especially considering how much manpower they've put in this game.
Well I've never heard a developer address the third person point view in their games, and few games have that. While I agree the controls are very complex, the meaning behind their creation seems very logical.
I wasn't aware of the level of manpower they put into it, and I imagined if they did put a lot of manpower, it would be a complete game (it seems very incomplete), but I like what they have done with allowing a third person view for wider field of view, because a lot of devs don't do it
man this game will be dumbed down not a bit. It will be almost a different game completely for console. But then i think The original Ghost recon did well on consoles, that was a pc conversion. But again the console version of Ghost recon was dumbed down immensely, it was almost a different game on consoles compared to pc's. Another example Heroes of might and magic was really bad on consoles yet awesome on pc. But Ghost recon and Rainbow 6 vegas do well. But then they are only action games now
It DOES say that on the official website,but it doesn't say which console.
There is a slight possibility it will be ported to the consoles,most likely the 360 if it is at all,and that's a big if.
But,they'll have to fix the incredibly buggy campaign or at least the major bugs in the game before they can even think of a console port.Needless to say,IF it does release on the consoles,it will be dumbed a bit.
Any news when this game will hit shelves in NA? Apparently they haven't been able to find a publisher fast enough, seems the only way to get the game is steam, or import from Europe.

I bought this game today on steam, but the controls are insane. I don't even know if I'll play the game at all at this rate. There is a button for Prone, and another button for Go Prone....WTF? There are just dozens of vague, poorly described, superfluous and seemingly redundant commands. There is a damned Salute command. What the hell is going on with this game?

@032125 Hello, Arma 2 is not a classic FPS game. It´s complex military simulator with various options and possibilities. It allows almost all actions/activities you need as a soldier. However you can setup the keys according to your needs. Check out our other videos introducing the basic controls + scripting and how to guide to create your own missions.

I've downloaded the demo for ArmA 2, to see if I like the game, but the controls are a little confusing, and I really don't know how to do anything other than the basic controls, or how to drive. Plus there isn't many missions or things to do in the ArmA 2 demo, I still feel unsure about whether I want this game. The tutorials in the demo don't teach to many things either. (I don't even know how to text chat, I need help!)

@novaleafy send me a pm I'll help you out, demo is really not a great indicator of whats in the game, thats why its a demo, the missions in the demo are limited to what you get in the demo, in the full game, you can download missions or make your own, the editor is where its at. You would be seriously missing out on a game that has a versatility and vast community that it has. I dont think there is any other games that allow you to do what you can do in Arma, and Arma 2, the editor is the best!

next time Arrowhead goes on sale or I get some money I might get this thing. Arma 2 is a prety solid game thusfar and it's super in depth, the only thing it lacks really is 'gloss'. Gloss meaning well, the edges being smoothed: i.e. UI Streamlining, a bit better art direction and such to help bring it in to the standards of AAA titles as far as looks go. Possibly tweaking things here and there. Of course BIS is kind of like a bigger indie studio so these things can be accepted in context.

Because of the high hardware requirements, this game is not even playable on most pcs, and will not run on consoles.
Also there is the 225 square kilometers map filled with AIs, which all have military tactics inside of their minds to fall back to, and they all communicate with eachother, the AI doesn't cheat by looking through walls for example.
And then there are lots of buttons required for this military simulation (no cod). And the big online support with mods.
Not for consoles.

Yo! BIS! - Take a good look at yourselves.. NO ONE'S PLAYING YOUR "REALISTIC" GAME! -
Here's a few reasons why -
1. Those silly imaginary crosshairs just turn it into an arcade shooter. (And I'm not TURNING THEM OFF if everyone else on the server is using them!)
2. 99% of the games online are using suck-ass MHQ and endless Respawns. Dying and Teleporting right back into the action is FAR from realism.
3. No 1 WANTS to play against AI. Use your resources to increase the number of HUMAN slots.

3 problems I have with ArmA being "Realistic" (of course it's the most realistic game out there, but still...) -
1. Get rid of those stupid imaginary white crosshairs! (small quabble)
2. Most important - NO MHQ or forward respawn point of any sort should be allowed!!
+ would be nice if there was NO RESPAWN (or maybe very limited number of lives) at all.
3. Game companies should focus on increasing the amount of HUMAN players a server can hold, and forget about AI. We are still in the stone age

It's all about allocating resources and energy. BIS made a big deal about improving the AI, when it's obvious to anyone who's ever played online that the FUTURE holds NO AI at all. At the moment these maps are just TOO BIG to fill with human players, but that should be the GOAL. Trust me, if you had a map like Chernarus filled with Thousands of HUMAN players, the AI would simply go straight into the trash. So why are they wasting their energy and funds on improving the AI??

The future is infact complete player-run soldiers, because not only does AI have perfect aim, but the thing about fighting other humans, is it's generally easier to kill other humans compared to AI. Sandbox environments filled with real people would be amazing

I would suspect server lag to be increased due to the processing of the AI having to interact with all players on the map as well, and killing an AI character is rarely ever fun for me, unless, maybe, if its a zombie, in which i am perfectly satisfied with having lots of AI zombies around

like the developer said the maps are over 255km Square. I can run the game with every cranked up 8950 with no issues. I have the Game on 1024x768 Resolution and 1600 View distance which all you need anyways. If your having performance issues then your computer is probably outdated or you need tweak you graphic options. Anyways thanks for making the game Bohemia and I can't wait for Arrowhead to come out. Keep up the good work.

This game rocks. As with every version (OPF, ARMA) takes a while to get use to controls & find the best video settings.
A 9500 is a mid range 9 series and 2 years old. I put 1 in a home theater PC b/c it's quite/low power. A friend has a similar setup and runs fine w/ settings set at medium & high draw distance at ~2km.
I have a machine similar to the 1 used to for this vid and run fine with all but shadows at very high and draw at 3.8km.

In my case it works fine only when I drop with details to LOW:( I play in resolution 1440x900 and it still looks cool, but ... I'm not satisfied with these LOW settings. Especially when - in exampe - FAR CRY 2 and FALLOUT 3 work perfectly with everything on MAX and in the same 1440x900 resolution. Strange..

I got WIndows I7 (newer than vista), HDMI screen, an Xbox controller (infantry/vehicles) and a saitek X45 Joystick with footpedals (aircraft). With a great machine, this is a very realistic game, not meant for thoes who dont enjoy realizm, or with computers that need upgrading.

I don't agree because it's complete nonsense. The smartest game developers are the ones who can make a game that sells really well, it's as simple as that.
While it's all wonderful the way they talk, reality is that the controls of the game are overly complex and as a result the game will not reach a broad market, this in my opnion is from a marketing perspective simply poor development, especially considering how much manpower they've put in this game.

Well I've never heard a developer address the third person point view in their games, and few games have that. While I agree the controls are very complex, the meaning behind their creation seems very logical.
I wasn't aware of the level of manpower they put into it, and I imagined if they did put a lot of manpower, it would be a complete game (it seems very incomplete), but I like what they have done with allowing a third person view for wider field of view, because a lot of devs don't do it

man this game will be dumbed down not a bit. It will be almost a different game completely for console. But then i think The original Ghost recon did well on consoles, that was a pc conversion. But again the console version of Ghost recon was dumbed down immensely, it was almost a different game on consoles compared to pc's. Another example Heroes of might and magic was really bad on consoles yet awesome on pc. But Ghost recon and Rainbow 6 vegas do well. But then they are only action games now

It DOES say that on the official website,but it doesn't say which console.
There is a slight possibility it will be ported to the consoles,most likely the 360 if it is at all,and that's a big if.
But,they'll have to fix the incredibly buggy campaign or at least the major bugs in the game before they can even think of a console port.Needless to say,IF it does release on the consoles,it will be dumbed a bit.
