The backyard professor has BLOCKED me .. .Hebraic B of M Of course the book of mormon sounds hebrew it quotes extensively from the hebrew book. like 20 some chapters of Isaiah . NHM = Nahom It is suggested that the pronunciation of NHM is unknown and may not relate to Nahom at all is mormon wishful thinking. Where did JosephSmith get the name ? A. The King James version of the bible. Nahom as a variant of the Biblical names Naham (1 Chron. 4:19), Nehum (Ne. 7:7) and Nahum (Na. 1:1).
@Thebraversword remarkable similarities. Not only the story , but the concept of hebrew jews is not an original of Joseph Smith. JS plagiarised the bible complete with 17th century english he also plagiarised the book by Ethan Smith "Views of the Hebrews " in print in 1820
I love the illustrations they use in these segments - very nice. And also the music. I am a non-believer, but 1 Nephi has some strong stories in it once it really gets rolling.
Joseph Smith often used people/place names of things around him to name stuff in the Book of Mormon. In fact, one of the men who testifies against Joseph Smith's book being a rip-off of Solomon Spalding's work was named 'Nahum Howard.' So it is definitely not impossible for Joseph to have come up with that word and then have it happen to 'kind of' match with something real. The engraving says NHM, and it is an big assumption to say that the missing vowels are exactly what Joseph wrote.
The names found in the book of Mormon, have been verified, by other ancient found documents. Alma has been found as a male name in Hebrew texts elsewhere than the BoM.
lol aight, you keep thinking that and giving old men in utah 10% of your money to build a 3 billion dollar mall or multi-million dollar hotel. I'll be laughing when we die and you don't get your promised celestial kingdom. Yes, Alma and other names might have been found elsewhere, but Joseph had them close around him and easily could have used them. Period. I tend to take the more likely answer (random guy made this stuff up from his surroundings versus god told random guy this stuff).
Umm place names around where he lived. Are you even reading what I am saying? Look it up online to see the similarities. For example, Alma was already the name of a place south of Pennsylvania since before the time Joseph Smith was even born. The same goes for Lehigh (Lehi) County, which was located along the Delaware River. This is not rocket science we're talking about.
I sware, I am not just making this stuff up despite what you would like to think ;-)
You give yourself too much credit. The book of Mormon is exactly what it portrays. nothing more, nothing less. Your arguements have long been refuted and you're only beating a dead horse.
No no, I do not give myself any credit. I give the facts credit. The FACT that there were many places near and around Joseph that had names that needed to be changed only slightly to get what we see in the Book of Mormon is obvious. Alma wasn't even changed for that matter.
Joseph didn't even need to go anywhere to know the word Nahum - The Book of Nahum was already in the Bible that he claimed to be very well versed in. Why do you try so hard to believe the most unlikely cause of a result?
Nahum you mention isn't the same thing, the place of NHM is different as it sat on the old frankincense trail back in the day of Lehi 600BC as it was well known and used. The location spoken of in the book of Mormon there is no way Joseph could have known this place existed, because none of the maps avail to us even mention Nahum till the 19th century and the burial site wasn't found till 1966.
What I am saying is that he basically used the word from the bible and got lucky. He used hundreds of different names, and one of them kind of coming close (NHM doesnt necessarily mean Nahum) to something in real life is hardly proof for anything.
If that strengthens your faith, I will leave it at that. For me, it is just something that happened by chance like everything else in this life.
No, there really are connections that are pretty easy to be made, but neither of us is goin to convince the other. I am a recent return missionary (of your church), and I know how easy it is to make parallels between such stuff - I had people doing it for the past 2 years. People believe what they want.
Anyways, have a happy thanksgiving (assuming you are in the US, of course).
@7he7ruthHurts It's not just the place-name similarity (NHM) that makes this find remarkable support for the BoM, you are missing the point big time. Oh, and Joe got lucky? Did he also get 'lucky' about the use of the names Alma, Sariah, Zarahemla, Jershon, Mosiah, Aha, Pahoran, Paanki, Pacumeni and countless others in the BoM? Many of those names -formerly a source of scoff and scorn for critics- weren't validated through archeological research until many decades after the BoM was published.
Speaking of Zarahemla, has anyone found that great city yet, or any of the Lamanites who came from Jerusalem and were of Jewish descent? Didn't think so. How about steel swords, the coins from the complex monetary system, or horses? Again, didn't think so.
The rocks are out of the hat: The Book of Mormon is a man-made story about fictive deities and supernatural events just like the Bible, or any other *holy writ* for that matter. All religions try to appear true so they can take your money.
@7he7ruthHurts Well, the fact that you didn't know that you haven't noticed that there's no coins mentioned in The Book Of Mormon doesn't make that statement very reliable ;) (or maybe you did know it but don't wanted to use it anyways, who knows).
in an ever changing world and one with increasing wickedness and godlessness, one would think that a second witness of the divinity of Christ would be welcomed with open arms. Mark my words... if a man had to face life or death because an atheist were to say that he only had faith in a Jewish God, and with a gun to his head, would he remember about this book? Would he plead for his life saying that another BOOK acts as evidence?
@LDSapologist71 That's specious reasoning. Have you ever heard of the human imagination? Also, before the 20th Century oral tradition was still a part of most cultures, even in the U.S. Can't go into it in this space, but it's not at all unrealistic that Jo might've absorbed much that way, created his saga & also recited it. Do a google search on oral tradition.
In light of all the evidence that supports the book of Mormon, it plainly makes it impossible that Joseph Smith "made it up" fore there are way too many things found in meso america and in the old world for it to be coincidence. The book of Mormon is 100% true.
I've watched all these LDS vids - zero evidence presented. They even admit that there is no 'proof' at the end! If your faith makes you happy, enjoy it. But there's nothing but one's own faith on which to base the assumption of 100% truth in the BOM.
Revelations 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Sometimes a witness of the spirit is the first fruits to accepting this record. It was not written by a Jew. It was written by the tribe of Joseph and adds as a second witness of Jesus Christ. Why do folks dispute that we have more? A man can be acquitted of guilt with only ONE eye witness... how the more convincing would it be to have two?
There ought not to be anything wrong with finding something else... what if the tribe of Gad has a record? Should we deny it also?
There are many videos pointing out the location of Nahum. The reason it is indisputable evidence is there is absolutely no way that Joseph Smith could have known this. Nahum wasn't discovered by westerners until 1950's and the major archaeology wasn't done until 1996 and 2003 when the altar was located.

Yes, it has been refuted by Mormon apologists. Look more deeply into the matter, and best luck in your studies. Hopefully you dont take statements like Mr. Hollands or those on FAIR for face value and actually look for a 3rd party opinion. But then again to do so would be like finding out that Santa isnt real, and many people really want their presents!
Where is Zarahemla ?

Here are just a few examples of place names that Joseph likely ripped off (ones in parenthesis are how they were changed and then put in the BoM):
Alma (Alma)
Ephrem (Ephraim)
Kishkiminetas (Kishkumen)
Lehigh (Lehi)
Mantua (Manti)
There are seriously tons of these, but because of limited space here, you can go google others if you want more examples.
