Thank you for posting this. I have just finshed practicing this etude. I have not played the violin in a while and I wanted to get back in the swing of things and I thought these etudes would be a great chance for me to dust off my skills. And, they have worked so far. I find your tips to very good and I us them tomorrow when I pratice. Thank you!
Hello Prof V, Thank you so much for all the various videos/exercises and "tips" you provide. I fold you on UTube a yr ago and now feel comfortable to comment. I am studying the Wohlfhart Op45 series last fall w/my teacher Mildred Zitt of Toms River, NJ. You have provided me w/tremendous insights or confirmation of what she teaches me weekly. Thanks again. Hope to chat often.
I appreciate all of your videos. You explain everything so well. I love how you clarify things. Thank You for taking time to post videos such as these for us!
Hi, I have put some videos up to help people play the Wohlfahrt etudes in tune. If anyone thinks they are useful I will put the rest of them up, they really helped me with my intonation. Thanks
I just started playing the violin a few weeks ago and Im completly passionate about it. Next year will be time for college and I was hoping of enrolling in the music departement... the audition is in March 2010 and im required to do: Scales and Arpeggios : G and A major, B minor , 3 octaves, with various bowings, One etude and two pieces. I am willing to make all the effort necessary to get into that class but I was just wondering is it remotly possible??
Been working on this (for viola) for the past week. My instructor recommends bringing the elbow further under the instrument (away from the body) and pivoting on the third to keep the pinkie relaxed but bent. The combination of the low second and the fourth can be especially difficult on a viola!
I can't say "Wohlfahrt" without snickering. My study of counterpoint has been even more embarassing ever since I got "Gradus ad Parnassum" by Johannes Fux.
I just got this book yesterday! I haven't played for a year so I trying to get back in shape. I bought the book because I saw this video and I really love it. Do more from this book and if possible what other music study books do you recommend? You should do a short video on that.
Ahh Im doing variation 5 and so far its pretty good except sometimes I do 4 or 3 to a bow by mistake.. when you do the scales youu know.. up or down? Well This helped a bit :]
kreutzer is essential. if nothing else, work through the kreutzer etudes (not in numerical order). the master heifetz said it himself "it's the professional's handbook"
after that, rode/gavinies/dont have some good studies, but dont bore yourself playing them all. and paganini's 24 caprice are good for the ultimate test
kreutzer and paganini are the only two ive played completely... etudes tend to be boring :P (but useful).
First of all, congrats for the great work and clips you're putting online. I'm an adult violin learner and I went through some of your videos. They are of great inspiration and you explain with clarity and simplicity the technique or principle to achieve. The Wohlfahrt's series made me revisit these etudes to get a fresh look on their purpose. I believe the 4th finger and my old bad habits make it quiet difficult to fix the position of the pinky but your tips are certainly helping. Thank you!
I play by ear all the time and think it's a great skill that should be developed. The more you're on the instrument and the more you attempt to play by ear the easier it becomes. Suzuki violin students are often particularly good at this skill.
Folk fiddlers almost ALWAYS play by ear and even look down on players who use sheet music either to learn or perform.
thanks for your hard work ! I just managed to finished this piece during my final exam period. and I have to say I found those kind of Etude better than what is on suzuki. I felt that I benefit a lot from the Etude, and the melody is nice too.
Hey, how's life? Thanks for the comment. I really like the Wohlfahrt Etudes as well, but did not when I was a boy! I liked your Godfather Theme video - good work!
Joseph, No they are different. I believe it goes Op. 38, then Op 74 and finally Op. 45 (from easiest to hardest). Some of the Op. 45 is pretty tough (and hardly ever played, it seems - specifically the end of book two). Many of the first 30 are very accessible. Pick them up if you can!
I have the problem of a short finger, besides it's a little bend to the next finger so when I curved it, it points to my palm center...sorry, I'm not sure if I explain it correctly.
Yes, I understand. The curved end of your pinky probably forces you to reach further up the neck to get it in tune. Perhaps the lower thumb placement will help this! Good luck with it.
Oh, I forgot to mention earlier; can you organize your videos into playlists (or whatever they're called) so that it's easier to pick and choose which of your videos to watch? For instance, you could start a playlist on bow technique, another for the Wolfahrt etudes, etc. Just an idea that I thought could improve the utility and accessibility of your fine videos.
I know it's difficult to find things. I didn't plan to do so many videos when I started (actually, there was no planning at all on my part). Now I can't change the order from the way they were posted. If you look at the title, it should be by subject. If there are multiple videos on a subject, they are listed as "String Crossing part 1", etc. Sorry it's not more clear though!
Wow, I really really like your new idea here. Hopefully you'll get started on Kreutzer and Gavinies soon for your more advanced e-students! Thanks, and please keep up the great work!
the 4th finger won't be a problem if you don't move your whole hand like you say to. Just move the second finger back

i could not play sonatas cause i do not understand notes on the scale

i can play those types of pieces cause they have lyrics which can easily be matched to the violin's tune

on the first 7 notes is it the same string?
chucku516 4 years ago
Yes, if you play the E with a 4th finger - which I recommend here since you are not crossing strings.
