I'd love to see an other modern big budget animatronic horror movie with a decent storyline... CGI looks nice and all, but it still hasn't come up to the point it can fully replicate the look and feel of actual physical props, not to mention that it often shows that the actors aren't fully able to place themselfs in everything that's happening around them with CGI.

If you factor in that the Aliens found a way into the secure areas in which Ripley & company were located you'd understand that they were given their just do as "intelligent".

As a simple example Hudson remarks "how can they kill the power -they're just animals" -this basically tells the audience that these creatures are obviously intelligent, in fact throughout the entire movie that theme was clear, plus Alien had all sorts of less professional effects then did the superior Aliens

I would say that they are animals, but animals with an intellect such that they can do problem solving. It is entirely possible that 'cutting the power' was merely them breaking through a bulkhead to get above the ceiling which in turn disabled power to that section of the base. They showed intelligence by finding a way in, but the idea of deliberately severing the power is ambiguous and kept off screen so we can't really draw any conclusion to that level of intelligence.

@MrCaine Go back and watch Alien, then Aliens. I think you'll find that you're mistaken. It's illogical for this Alien creature to behave as a sadistic monster. The Alien immobilizes humans as hosts for the facehuggers. I think it's reasonable to assume in retrospect that the Alien on the Nostromo was causing severe injury, incapacitating the crew. But had more facehuggers been present, the entire crew of the Nostromo would have been cocooned as hosts for Alien embryos.

@marxmith Actually, I was taking what Ridley Scott had to say about his vision of the Alien creature. It's a monster movie; not an action movie. It's suppose to be scary, fear of the unknown. But my point was the 2nd movie takes that fact away from the series. However, from what we've seen, Aliens can be VERY offensive and very defensive. It was intentionally killing the crew, save for one which was used to be an egg. (Directors Cut). Then watch Alien3, it was killing to protect the future queen

In Aliens the creatures show complex problem solving skills, such as cutting the power, infiltrating the medlab, and other coordinated attacks such as ambushing the marines in the hive. In Alien the creature did little more than stalk the crew and attack them when they were separated from the group as any predatory animal would.

I just think the movie makers got lucky enough things went this way. Originally in the first movie the Alien was suppose to kill Ripely at the end and actually speak. They got axed by Fox and I think that was a good thing, the original idea for the ending was pretty lame. My opinion of course.

Those kinds of movies are coming back, as GC engines are use to control animatronic/robotic. What we're gonna see soon is "real" hardware puppets that move incredibly realistic thanks to computer. Best of both worlds.

I always liked the "puppet" face huggers and the "rubber suited" aliens of the first two movies the best. The CGI versions of the face huggers and aliens from movie 3, 4, and AVP just seemed totally lame and not scary at all. I think it's better for the actor to pretend to be afraid of something that's actually there than at a ball or tape line that marks where a CG creature will be after editing.

I've tried to give "Alien4" some respect, but I can't. Look at it: It goes against everything the series is. And don't give me the lame excuse that it was " redefining the series by being different". It wasn't trying to redefine anything. The director took his stab at it, and it was bad( "City of Lost Children" was fucking great, but the Aliens series is just not his style...his too goofy). Lets be honest: Alien4 was not the best one, it was the weakest, 2nd only to AvP.
