  • A few years ago, I was stationed in Okinawa.

I remember, sitting in my barracks room, window open, the chirping of cicadas and the oppressive heat rolling in with every swell of the evening breeze, as the sun disappeared into the forest on the horizon.

    I miss it so much...

  • so annoying! : (

  • I was watching "The girl, who leapt through time" and that annoying sound was in every other scene! At first I thought that there was something wrong with my sound card, but now I'm watching a different anime, and there it is again.

  • Does anyone know what species this is?

  • Does anyone know what species this is?

  • Reminds me of Serial Experiments: Lain

  • You know that there are cicadas all over the world right? Not just in Japan

  • @Stillwater900 but they aren't that loud and don't make the same "melody"

  • @GronkAkowA The ones in Arizona, where I live, sound IDENTICAL to that, and they're extremely loud

  • @Stillwater900 maybe they do, but that doesn't apply to "cicadas all over the world"

  • @GronkAkowA And just how do you know? Maybe they aren't EXACTLY the same, but so what? Its still a deafening, irritating buzz.

  • @Stillwater900 well, YOU said sth. about "all over the world" and cicadas in every country I've ever been to don't sound like that, plus where I live they don't do that either - thats how I know.

And when they are EXACTLY the same, then they aren't the same characteristic japanese noisy guys

  • Higurashi :P

  • In anime everything is used for something. Since cicadas only sing at 25 celcius, when you hear them it means is summer

  • I'm so lucky that I hear cicadas in my place during the summer even if I dont live in Japan

  • @Leonknight23 You say you're lucky to hear cicadas?? Jeez, I have to plug my ears when I ride past them on my bike, its very loud to me. My ears are super-sensitive though... I can hear dog whistles

  • @Leonknight23 Really? You like the sound of cicadas?? In Arizona, they are extremely loud, so loud that I have to plug my ears when I go passed a tree with one.

  • the best cicada noise ever... would rather hear this than crickets here in canada.

  • I wish cicadas cried like that in the U.S.!

  • @melonsoda24 Cicadas DO make buzz like that in the US. Here in Arizona, they buzz all through summertime. Trust me though, you're lucky you don't have them, that buzzing is extremely loud, I have to plug my ears when I go past a tree with one. You can't tell from this video, but it really is VERY loud

  • higurashi!

  • So nostalgic.

  • higurashi!

  • @MoshiLKano it's not higurashi

  • Why would anyone dislike this sound? Is it so mindblowingly annoying that you just HAD to click the dislike button instead of, you know, turning it off?

    I weep for humanity...

  • Oh yeah, it's that noise that plays whenever something bad is about happen in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

    Well, shit.

  • It's like I'm really reading Higurashi.

  • At least they sound much better than the Algarve Portuguese Cicadas, which makes a continuous and loud horrible sound. O.O

  • cicada's have many songs then i guess? the other sound they make from anime is here: /watch?v=0YJZEUSKJhs

  • Every time i hear this i think of Higurashi no naku koro ni the anime

  • video games?

  • yeah they sound the same in north Carolina too

  • Very good, thanks, reminds me of tenchu.

  • always wondered what this sound was. Just googled "noise in japanese animes" and this came up, love the internet

  • Over there.

    It's an Eva...

  • It's like being in 300 anime shows at the same time!

  • woooha!! the cicadas from higurashi no naku koro ni :D

  • Whats weird, Every few yrs, in kentucky, u hear cicaidas...

Mabe the climate's similar... But i used to imitate them when i was little, even BEFORE i watched anime

  • I heard these noises many times in Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. ^^

but i always thought it was wood or buildings making a creaking noise.

But i guess why its called Higurashi?

  • This is heard in every anime when it's summer time ~____~ love this noise. Makes me wanna have a summer in Japan.

  • Exactly, NGE! Love it! :D

  • actually, i live in colombia. you can hear them here as well doing that sounds

  • @acechris89 that show made me like this sound.

  • That sound can be heard in a lot of video games.

  • Those beasts are so noisy! First time I heard them I thought someone was using a chainsaw nearby. XD;;

  • reminds me of tenchu

  • I love this sound

    :)

  • Only in japan... Not sure... When lived with my grandma i used to hear it to... in Brazil - Fortaleza

  • lol true

  • lol! thats why i looked this up. They are so loud in that series.

  • I remembered when I was in Japan and heard these.

    Such a calm song [:

  • These guys are huge, was walking around and one came flying at me. They can be kind of annoying but its cool hearing them sometimes.

  • mii mii mii miiiiiiiii

  • so cool

  • anime

  • That sound is in pretty much every anime show where the setting is a Japanese high school!

    It's dead on!

  • The sound is often played in Japanese commercials too. Similar to in America, the sound of crickets is equivalent to summer nights, for Japanese this is very common. This sound means summer for them. [:

  • (Re: pinketto:

this is only heard in Japan and in some video games ;) )

Video games ya. Animal Crossing: City Folk ^^

  • YES!!! <33333

  • I love the sound. It's so strange! To think that a bug can make it, is insane!

  • At last!!! Does anyone know what these species are???? Exatly like wexilke, i've heard it in animes and games, i love the sound! Nothing like the noizy cicadas we've got here in greece.

  • They are called Minmin-zemi, or oncotympana maculaticollis

    :)

  • YEah man these fuckers are outside my apartment NEVER SHUT UUPPPPP

  • I heard these guys when i was in hawaii

  • Гы прям как в аниме гудят. В крыму не такие :)

  • I live in Ontario, Canada, and even I've heard this kind of cicada during the summer. Does anyone know what this species is called? I love this sound.

  • umm. i live in in South Carolina and we have them here. they are VERY loud in the summer. it's not only in Japan...

  • I live in Georgia, and I find 'em all the time! I even have caught 'em before c: Love the sound- and will be happy to hear more when I get to Japan

  • Oh man, I always heard this sound in anime series, and had no idead what it meant. By accident I found out about the cicada, now I can live in peace, haha.

  • sounds exactly same as ones in new zealand. If you live on the edge of a lot of bush it can be really loud.

  • I actually love this sound. I find it somehow soothing and calming.

  • They really sound so different from those we have in the US. I remember on my visit to japan how very odd it was to hear something so familiar sound so foreign!

  • i've only ever heard this in animal crossing and some anime :3

  • I see them all the time in the U.S. :/

    And hear them.

  • Are these higurashi cicadas?

  • nope :/ Higurashi cicadas are evening cicadas, also known to signal the end of summer and the approach of fall :)

  • nuuu not in Japan only...I always hear them here ^__^ and I live in Canada!

  • I love that noise!

  • Well... cicadas belong to tropical weather, thats why you guys hear them on Japan and Peru and Uruguay

  • you can hear this sound during the summer on Harvest Moon for Nintendo 64

  • lol, those were cicadas? i thought someone was sawing some wood. lmao.

  • finally someone else remembers harvest moon 64 and the cicada sound

  • I heard the same sound on the peruvian jungle

  • Not just Japan... I think it's in east asia all around. I heard these in Taiwan. I love the sound of cicadas... Makes me so nostalgic. XD
