  • cobain on drums

  • Not bad at all. Like others have said, cut down on the fills, and when you do use fills try to finish on the 1. Most of your fills carry over too far into the next bar. Bass drum sounds a hair too early on your one drop too. Like a 64th note off or something minute like that.

  • Not bad but you need to groove more and cut down on the fills. As this was 3 years ago I hope you've improved. There are many moods to ska, rocksteady and reggae try and absorb all you can and develop your own style.

  • Awesome cover, doesnt get better then this...

I am an Intermediate drummer, and i have the hardest time playing reggae music, i really enjoy playing it but its a pain, and i play some reggae for my jazz band in school and we are currently playing this and i couldnt get the groove right, but this helped alot thanks man! keep up the great work!

  • nice, kurt cobain!

  • @masputaqueopariu Exactly what I was thinking

  • Smooth dude! You should come to Hawaii! We could use a good drummer like you! =)

  • YOU ARE AMAZING! BEST REGGAE DRUM COVER IVE SEEN IN A LONG TIME MATE, KEEP THEM COMING! :)

  • What rudiments are you using in this? I know its kind of a dumb question, but I'm trying to learn how to play drums better.

  • @Yami2po Almost everything was done with single strokes.

  • @geekusadrummer Thanks man. You have a sick groove. You should put up some more reggae covers

  • @Yami2po thanks man! I am going to be putting up some new video's which are scheduled to be recorded in early May. I'm excited to share them!

  • @geekusadrummer i heard a few drummers say that it's bad to use doubles in reggae, do you think that holds any merit?

  • @Dubz229 Listen to the opening of Three Little Birds. This is a popular drum fill, and to make this 'ruff' rudiment work, you could either single stroke it, or use a double stroke. I think both would be acceptable. But I'm not a reggae guru, so it's just my observation thus far.

  • @geekusadrummer Thanks for your advice. Guru or not, you play very well and your advice is more than appreciated. All the best to ya! Glad you're posting vids again, by the way!

  • @Dubz229 You are the one that is playing... its up to you how you want to play your instrument!

  • @Yami2po im pretty sure he used a couple drags.

  • Awesome the hi hat is so perfect!!

  • what kind of skin do you have up on your snare drum, a remo.... ?

  • @Kingswa93 I think it's a single ply Remo.

  • my step daughters grand dad ( Carlton Barrett) was the original drummer for for Bob Marley. Im proud. You did a great job

  • @GOEvideo carlton is the man! i've some bob covers too, chek it out!

  • my step daughters grand dad ( Carlton Barrett) was the original drummer for for Bob Marley. Im proud. You did a great job

  • nice hihat work!

you are a great drummer :)

  • gr8!

  • By far the best cover of I Shot The Sheriff on YouTube!! In fact, the others don't compare!!

  • is it me or do your fills run a little long a few times?

  • really nice and perfect , huge expression

  • Great drumming not many people can drum to reggae keep it up!

  • AHHH THIS CHILL OUT ;D;D;D XDDDD

  • what happened at 2:09 ?

  • @egbt4

    I came =)

  • good work....I'd just say try and focus on your right foot....the key to gettin at carlton's style on this song is the variations he makes with his foot....take your hands out of the mix a little bit.....it might be fun, it might be impressive.....but all of that busy hand work destroys the groove

  • damn good cover

  • great job man!

  • Awesome! you got the groove alright!!!

  • Perfect!!!

  • what type of snare and set do you use??

  • @gatorben13 The whole kit is a Pacific LX all maple.

  • i hav the drum manuscript from just watching this and if u could please tell me about all the accents i worked them out but it is rlly hard to manage them at this type of awesomeness

If this isnt "tight" then i must really not know anything about reggae drumming

You and a lot of people.

The flam is off, its not 'Ital', its not roots, not true reggae... its 'white boy'.

If you know reggae you know what Im talking about.

I'll borrow a phrase to define it: "Gratuitous ethnic bullshit."

  • I hear what your talking about but it still good

  • If this isnt "tight" then i must really not know anything about reggae drumming and Ive been learning it for some time now.... This is really good probably the best I shot the sheriff cover on here. I like the hi hat its very true to the song and the fills are cool.

  • @ellmerrfudd Thanks! Looking at it critically though, if you listen carefully to the 'drop' i.e. where the kick and cross stick meet, you will hear that some of them are right on top of each other, and others are flamming a little bit, and other are flamming a lot. This kind of inconsistency will indeed destroy the groove! Or let's put it this way...it would feel much better if it was tight. Other than that I may have had a couple places where I rushed the time.

  • Wooow its awesome:D

  • good style ...good roots feels mixed in there.... much bless.

  • holy shit your drums sound perfect

  • Barrett never played all that over the bar shit, its not roots.

  • @generatrix999 yeah your right, he was a great drummer tho.

  • Nice job on that tune; I love the funky beat/sound. 5 stars. I'm workin on a Bob Marley song myself.

  • is this very very nise your cover men

  • kurt cobain lives ;)

  • Great, Perfect Cover, Thx ... SnOOpy

  • i bet this guy is bliiiiiiiiiiiiiiind ^_^ cheee!!!!!

  • How do you get that sound on the snare?

  • bro. that was tight

    God Bless

  • omg this is perfect! (I'm a Bob Marley connoisseur btw)

    let Jah be praised

  • youre really good! too bad your not in hawaii i would say play for our band we no more drummer thats why. ha! keep it up though its really good. like how you do your fills.

  • SWEET =)

  • Great!

  • oh.......my.............god im subscribeing

  • how do you tune your snare like that?....i been trying for a while

  • @CrazyQuadPlaya937 Tight on both heads. Use a single ply snare on top. Hit it off center for more overtones. Also hit it with the rim (rimshot).

  • that snare sounds like a timbale....weird

  • Nice Drum Cover Man!

  • NICE ONE ... I SUB

  • that kit sounds amazing its got a nice 'ring' to it if you know what i mean

  • UR AWESUMM !!

  • GREAT FILLS

    GREAT DRUMMER.

  • nice groove, nice sound mother F.

    Congratulations from Argentina.

  • FAVOURITE DRUMMER!!! It awesome coz you dont just chuck ten billion stroke rolls leading into a ridiculous solo's. You got sick groove. In my opinion a drummer with a strong expression beats a freak technical drummer any day

  • @shornosorhus totally agreed

  • Pretty damn good, buy a better camera and you're the shit!!!

  • Tremendo! muy bueno!

  • lovin it man...you put more solos in to it more than me...cool

  • What is that drum to the left of his snare?

    A djembe, conga or what?

  • Timbale. Snare without the bottom head on.

  • haha nice way to make a timbale, the way my dad does it

  • nice drumming there bro. lyk ur style as well...

  • nice chop...

  • U R So Tight Great chops

  • ii didnt think theyy allowed pornography on Youuchoooob ;)

  • very nice~! trowing some of ur own own flare!

  • thats pretty mad skills lol i like ya style!!!

  • some of the tightest drummin ive seen, some serious style

  • Comment removed

  • Great skills, no doubt. Your high-hat play was very nice and fit the reggae feel pretty well, and for most of the song you fit into the groove pretty great. However... the "solo" type thing at the end... I just wasn't feeling it. Reggae (especially old reggae - Bob Marley) is a VERY chill genre, and that solo/combination of fills all didn't seem to fit very well, as they were fairly energetic and all over the place. Great job though, that's just a tip.

  • Awesome vid man. Great skill too !

  • Nice, looking to broaden my play style instead of sticking to rock! this helped alot ty

  • you literally missed a lot of important shots

  • very nice man great drummer

  • I love the high-hat play. I think you have to play drums to truly appreciate this ;)

  • ou sont les temps mort ?

    t

  • ..Quoi?

  • killin it 10 outa 10

  • grrrreat feel dude how did you get that snare sound. great cover

  • Thanks! Both heads tunes decently tight. Lot's of studio compression as well.

  • well done!

  • very nice groove. nice sounds. two things, some times out of beat. And yo did´nt play the fills that came before the chords. those are nice ones play. io good solo. check on my rat race vid (also drum cover) sound sucks, but if you know the song you get to the point.

  • wow simply amazing dude!! great job on the fills bro!

  • Tasty !!!

  • nice ,very nice

  • Hey man what is that on the side a timbale or something?

  • It's a pseudo timbale. It's an old snare drum with the bottom taken off. Tightened the top head tightly and hit a lot of off center rim shots.

  • aah cool, thanks

  • Dude your groove is very nice. just a little tip from a bassist if you havent done it already, try some quarter triplets on the hihat. Marley's drummer uses it alot and in shuffle reagge grooves it sounds just magic !

  • Hey thanks! The quarter note triplet sounds like a great idea! Thanks!

  • hey man your drummin skills are really awesome plus some of your vids are inspirations for me to keep drummin.. ;-)

Sr but if you could show me somewhere the tabs for the song or the sheet music that would be more than awesome! =DD

  • Nice job on this! Reggae is fun but it is probably my least experienced level. I do a lot of swing and a fair bit of latin.

  • To many fills, reggae doesnt need fills the irregular unique beat should fill the song and keep the listener engaged ;]

  • how do get that sound from your toms man ?? and bdw great vidd m8

  • Thanks! Both heads are tuned a rather medium tight.

  • hey man, nice drummin. can you tell me how you recorded your drums? which mics and what kind of mixer did you use? because I'm just deciding on what to buy and would be nice to hear from others. thanxs, keep it up

  • Yeah man. Mics are Shure PG series Drum package, with an added SM57 for the snare. That runs into a Presonus Firepod. That runs into my MacBook Pro, which drops it into Cubase LE (which comes with the Firepod). I've gone through many difficulties with my Firepod, so as far as I'm concerned, it is a piece of shit. I recommend not taking your chances with it. Try a MOTU instead.

  • actually now that i think about it dude, try the "and" of 4 too that can sounds really hip sometimes

  • Very good feel, very laid back I love it but You end your fills on the same beat too often. Change it up more and add more syncopation between the bass and cross stick. Also sometimes in reggae less is more. Other than that wicked playing your getting the feel down great. BTW your drums sound amazing

  • Hey thanks man. When you say 'end the beat in the same place too often', you mean how I always end it on the 2? What are some other hip places appropriate in this style to end a phrase? Thanks!

  • yo man try ending some on the "and" of 1, i have a lot of fun doing that and it feels really good especially with a lot of world grooves

  • Yes dude exactly. Listen to more Reggae and check out what the drummers do. Some hip places to end the fill would be on the 4 on the 3 or on the and of 4 or on the 1 though not as common. I love what you do in the section leading up to the chorus. Your playing is so in the pocket, wicked feel and timing you have "it" man, you'll be great someday. I hope to see more from you!

  • man that was nice, if you know what did you tune your drums to? thats if you did tune them to something not just higher XD. anyway great drumming my cover i have up is shitt... illl be putting some mroe up hopefully over the next week ;)

  • Thanks! They aren't tuned to anything really. I just tune them a rather medium tightness, and try to avoid too much sympathetic buzz the best I can.

  • I didn't like it...

  • That was grat but at liek 56 u missed some stuff i think :S

  • exelente amigo...

  • hey man, just curious..... the drum way off to your left.... the whole reggae thing..... what's it called? i'm kinda dumb

  • i think that's a snare. a smaller one. a lot of drummers put an extra snare same as this one :)

  • Saul good man. It's supposed to be a Timbale. Though you can make one out of an old snare drum bu taking off the bottom of it, and cranking the top head fairly tight. Use a lot of rim when playing it to get that latin sound.

  • excelent raggae groove man...!

    grade job...!

    nice hugs...!

  • oh my GOD! your drums sound freakin awesome. way to go. this is one of my favourite songs of all time. perhaps i shall upload some drum covers as well. peace bro

  • thankz dude... whats new in your videos? is there any new drum cover or solos? iwant watch more from you....

  • Hey, I plan on recording a burnin big band tune, as well as maybe a 'chops fest' update next week since I'm on spring break. Thanks for the interest!

  • hmm.... pls give me some tips in choosing Dstick, bcoz i play jazz+rock, i want a Dstick thas is Superlight and Short in length, Thanks.

  • Check out Vic Firth American Jazz (AJ4). They are rather small, and light. I used them for a long time and I really liked them.

  • what size and class of drumstick do u use?

  • It's a Stanton Moore signature. I don't really know my stick classes, but they are close to a rock size. Though they are made of hickery, so they are a little bit lighter.

  • that was sick....really smooth.

  • hey great job man

    really good fills

  • what are you talking about? i was not discrediting his drumming i just simply stated its not easy i didn not say it was impossible , you need to shut up and the only one who is shamed in this scenario is you!

  • nice attempt bro, playing reggae isnt easy when its not your culture or natural vibe and you did well ! keep it up

  • black man was born with rhythm the white man just has to work a little harder for it its not impossible? so shame on you!

  • sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.....so smooth, good job man

  • love the riddim!!!

  • damn. i wanna be as good as you. btw, playing drums while high is the shit.
