@505SPEEDY the 4.6 modular with the aluminum blocks can't really be stroked reliably, unless you go for a livernois kit, it suffers from short cylinder walls just like the 289. the new gt smokes the new camaro in every aspect on the road course and the drag strip, and this svt had more power than the camaro ss.

back in the day i would consider this slow in 2003 just 390? but now with what you can do whats avaliable you can compliment the supercharger in so many ways. Port/Pulleys brings you too 550hp under 1,000$ like really thats bang for your buck

@pureadrenaline25 It was mostly issues with head and intake designs. Plus, back in the 90's when the 4.6 was introduced, most cars were making under 200hp. It was a strong motor for it's time. Ford played around with the number of valves during the 2000's, thankfully we have the new 5.0 pushing 412hp N/A now. Honda and acura wanted to make big power from tiny engines. Ford wanted to make just enough for the average person from a bigger engine.

In my ss i beat a o1 cobra. stock for stock. Even mach 1s .The topend of a ls1 keeps pulling harder up top than a cobra. remember 300rwhp+ on a ls1 and its lighter. Ls1 makes more rear horsepower. (Unless its a auto ls1because i use to pull on auto hard in my 6spd) ls1 are underated more like 345 at the crank than a cobra 318 at the crank and a heavier car. plus doesnt have a 6spd tranny. CAM Only and bolt ons i hit 400rwhp ls1 heads flow to good
Its not a old motor.Its a completely diffrent design than the conv. small block or lt1. Yes its a push rod motor just like a 5.0 dosnt mean thier the same. Any boost car has to be always tuned all the time or run saftley or they fuck up. A 600rwhp ls1 can hit 9s a cobra no it takes way more power. so horse power isnt everything. Thats why 391 stroker built for spray(no nitrous) 3spd 410s on slicks beat a 347 strocker with a big turbo ford 9" rear and slicks in a notch. 391 didnt even use spray.

@enamoev Yeah it's fast for it's time, LS1s HAVE run low 13s, but Cobras HAVE run 12.3s@114mph. It's all dependent on the track conditions and driver. I do agree the stock performance is nothing to celebrate about though. It's when you do a pulley, intake and exhaust and run mid-low 11s@120mph+ in a car that drives IDENTICAL to stock.
GM fan here. Can't hate on these cars. Much respect and when I had my M6 05 GTO I got beat by a nose by a stock 04 Cobra. Same guy goes out and gets a CB and air filter. We run again and I lost by 4 fuckin car lengths. FOUR. And I went 12.97@109.6 In my stock GTO LS2. These cars are sick and VERY mod friendly. Only thing I hated was the shifter. Guy let me sit in it and your hand hit the radio? And the stock GTO shifter was nothing to brag about but man the Cobra position sucked.
actually its got 450hp at crank.all dyno shops say they never have tested a svt cobra with less than 370hp to the wheels.FORD underrated the cobra's hp big time.2003 svt cobra=450hp.not 390hp.all mustang magazines prove the 450hp rating.
I dunno about 450 horses, but it was definitely underrated. I've seen the average rwhp to be in the 360 range, so I guess just splittin hairs, but also even if you take the 450hp and factor 15% loss, it's more than 370rwhp. Still, if you're objective you have to recognize that the 02 ss still posted a similar 1/4 mile with less hp (underrated too though), so a cobra is not the end all in am. muscle war stock for stock. Drove a stock 370rwhp cobra and not that impressed vs mildly modded mach1

they do have a new 5.0 Cammer 5.0 M-6007-R50 makes 400hp and 400lb*ft and there is none that make a ton of power with out a blower M-6007-521FT*609 hp@5750 630 lb* ft @4500

You can spin the motor high and ls1s have such good flowing heads thats why cam only they reach over 400+rwhp(on a stock block with no boost). They made their race car the ford gt 330ci s/c couldnt reach 200mph stock. More expensive to and chevy reach it with a car half the price z06 with a (n/a) engine. tvs blower ford gt puts 630 rwhp.. heads and cam z06 puts 640+rwhp all motor no boost. ss camaro ls3 is zr1 foundation

@cruerocker2008 True, while the mustang is S/C the camaro holds a 1.1L advantage in displacement. So really all ford did was even that up without retooling the front suspension to accept the 5.4L, which was the cheaper route.
If you think about it, if Ford wanted to do that they could have just dropped in a Navigator DOHC 5.4 with 300hp to compete with the LS1s 305-310hp. You have to remember Ford already made the N/A DOHC 4.6L with 320hp, all it was missing was the torque to beat the LS1.
@jclarkesbcglobal They needed a driver upgrade then, a stock 98-02 SS will run door to door with an 01 Cobra and bolt on for bolt on the LS1 responds better. So unless your highly modded I doubt you're "walking" LS1s.
Look at the Car and Driver comparison on here between the Cobra, Ram Air T/A, and SS.
Also, you obviously had a 5spd Cobra...they're only offered with a manual transmission. 5spd from 93-01 (except the 00 Cobra R) then went to the 6spd in 03.

If you watched the video you'd know it was a brand spanking new Mustang GT and a brand spanking new Camaro Z/28, which was rated at 305hp but really was putting out roughly 330hp...like I said the LS1 was an under rated motor in the Camaro. These cars were tested by car and driver...they don't mention what kind of dyno they're running in the video.
Never said 03 cobra cant make good hp numbers. i would sell my ss for a stock 03 cobra because they have good power and always like that body style But not because its faster. port the blower and he can get up to 500rwhp but its already supercharge. Its like the ls9(zr1) makes way more power at less boost than an 03 cobra or gt500. you add a intake and a tune and you have way more than 600rwhp just that alone. Buts its a ls3 with a supercharger. All your doing is boosting the supercharger.

Not really, GM tuners can't turn the boost up on ZR-1s without running into cooling problems...Plus a LS9 (23k engine) costs 2k-6k more than a whole used 03 Cobra....so you really can't compare an engine to a whole car.
i love ls1s because you can do so much with them. Boost them or do just cam and head swap and make good numbers for the street. It will always come down to being a personal preference on what car you rather have. My 408 ls1 is really fast and even beat a whipple cobra but ive seen other ls1s(408) lose to whipple cobra because of the combo they run.(not all ls1(408) are the same. I always wanted to race a twin turbo cobra from a roll me of course on spray. i think ill jump it hard but walk medown

I've also driven 3 cobras(97,98,03), a bunch of GTs and my ex g/f had a 97 T/A 6spd....So like I said I have respect for both Mustangs and F-bodies having been around them my whole life.

@dkill429 I'm sure Chevy could make just as much hp as the new Ford 5.0 if they went the DOHC route. GM has their camaro with a 300+hp DOHC 6 cylinder. They could do the same with a V8 if they wanted to. GM sticks to tradition and used an American Chevrolet pushrod V8. But remember though, to upgrade a DOHC V8 cams you are going to have to buy four cams plus more springs.

with a turbo you can get almost any hp out of any engine. I've got an Grand National that would smoke the shit out of any DOHC "with turbo or not" car with my turbo 6 cylinder, just saying GM is just as capable as any other car manufacturer The new V6 Camaro has 316hp could gain almost 30hp with long tube tuned headers, considering the Ford v6 will not gain as much Hp. @leadsailz you will not smoke a D.O.H.C. with a turbo with your pushrod with a turbo.boost for boost,lol,YOU will get smoked.its called physics.4 valves move WAY more air than 2 valves.more air=more HP.Bottom line is the D.O.H.C. engine can make the same amount of HP as a pushrod 2 valve turbo engine but with LOTS less boost.
@dkill429 Also the new mustang V6 probably runs high compression. If you didn't boost and high compression don't mix. I've ran up to 24psi on the stock bottom end with only forged pistons and a two bolt main. BTW the GNX ran 13's from the factory floor, the new V8 mustang runs 13's.

@dkill429 Not true about the headers, the reason be is that the exhaust manifolds on the camaro are really restricted and using headers will increase more flow, that is why you gain so much. The new mustang cannot be said for because WE do not know the complete engine specs yet. The 3.6 is being revised and will 316hp. My GN isn't stock 9.90's for a street drivin car isn't slow, point being you can do anything with boost ;).

@505SPEEDY the 4.6 modular with the aluminum blocks can't really be stroked reliably, unless you go for a livernois kit, it suffers from short cylinder walls just like the 289. the new gt smokes the new camaro in every aspect on the road course and the drag strip, and this svt had more power than the camaro ss.

@pureadrenaline25 It was mostly issues with head and intake designs. Plus, back in the 90's when the 4.6 was introduced, most cars were making under 200hp. It was a strong motor for it's time. Ford played around with the number of valves during the 2000's, thankfully we have the new 5.0 pushing 412hp N/A now. Honda and acura wanted to make big power from tiny engines. Ford wanted to make just enough for the average person from a bigger engine.

In my ss i beat a o1 cobra. stock for stock. Even mach 1s .The topend of a ls1 keeps pulling harder up top than a cobra. remember 300rwhp+ on a ls1 and its lighter. Ls1 makes more rear horsepower. (Unless its a auto ls1because i use to pull on auto hard in my 6spd) ls1 are underated more like 345 at the crank than a cobra 318 at the crank and a heavier car. plus doesnt have a 6spd tranny. CAM Only and bolt ons i hit 400rwhp ls1 heads flow to good

Its not a old motor.Its a completely diffrent design than the conv. small block or lt1. Yes its a push rod motor just like a 5.0 dosnt mean thier the same. Any boost car has to be always tuned all the time or run saftley or they fuck up. A 600rwhp ls1 can hit 9s a cobra no it takes way more power. so horse power isnt everything. Thats why 391 stroker built for spray(no nitrous) 3spd 410s on slicks beat a 347 strocker with a big turbo ford 9" rear and slicks in a notch. 391 didnt even use spray.

He is saying that in 2000, Ford came out with a limited edition Cobra 'R' model that had a 5.4l n/a motor making an under-rated 380 hp. Of course this was a special model and only a 100 or so were made, but Ford knows how to make horsepower, they just don't need almost 6 liters to do it.

I do agree the stock performance is nothing to celebrate about though. It's when you do a pulley, intake and exhaust and run mid-low 11s@120mph+ in a car that drives IDENTICAL to stock.

GM fan here. Can't hate on these cars. Much respect and when I had my M6 05 GTO I got beat by a nose by a stock 04 Cobra. Same guy goes out and gets a CB and air filter. We run again and I lost by 4 fuckin car lengths. FOUR. And I went 12.97@109.6 In my stock GTO LS2. These cars are sick and VERY mod friendly. Only thing I hated was the shifter. Guy let me sit in it and your hand hit the radio? And the stock GTO shifter was nothing to brag about but man the Cobra position sucked.

I dunno about 450 horses, but it was definitely underrated. I've seen the average rwhp to be in the 360 range, so I guess just splittin hairs, but also even if you take the 450hp and factor 15% loss, it's more than 370rwhp. Still, if you're objective you have to recognize that the 02 ss still posted a similar 1/4 mile with less hp (underrated too though), so a cobra is not the end all in am. muscle war stock for stock. Drove a stock 370rwhp cobra and not that impressed vs mildly modded mach1

Why would ford try to make a small engine to make those numbers and chevy has a 302 that puts out good numbers in thier 60s camaro. Chevy is on top right now and will always be until ford desides to make bigger motors and better cars. 540 hp kr runs a 12sec 1/4 505 n/a z06 runs a 11 sec 1/4 mile. evens ss camaro 427hp(na) runs a high 12. I like the whole supercharge thing with ford but when you build a ls1 or any ls motor with boost thiers no competition.

First off yes thats my point they need to make a bigger motor. 412@ the crank but ford overrates all their cars except the cobra. super snake dynoed in the low 600rwhp when adver. at 725. Gm is ok with the bail out (read about it) off the subject about a ls1 motor or about gm put out n/a high hp cars. ford s/c car are so sensitive must be tune for everything if not that forged motor will fuck up. but people dont see that. they just see hp numbers like thats all that maters.

just a cold air intake to a rouch mustang it must be tuned whatever you do to the car and ls1s are more reliable cars. that put out good numbers and even more with boost. 800rwhp cobra ran low 10s wow thats good but so does a 600rwhp ls1. texas speed has a ls1 with a stock block no bore 346 running a 9.80(h/c). Thats like saying a 03 cobra can run a 9.80 on a stock blower. NOT possible. it all comes down to what you prefer. So that new 5.0 coming out..nope ls1 cam only 400rwhp not crank hp(6spd)

Ford does not underate thier cars except the cobra.. more like overrated. Gt500 kr put down 477 at the wheels somtimes less so how is that overrated. The only car overrated is the 03 cobra. Chevy underates all thier cars ls1s to ls7s. The only reason no z28s because they are coming back with them like the old times when they were faster than the ss. ford makes ohc cause they are more reliable chevy is using anceint technology ohv and i guess u never seen a blow through turbo 5.0 makin 1000+hp that run sub 8s any car can be fast if u got the cash. heads and cams for a z06 is alot more then just a supercharger for the 5.4 motor or 4.6 and if u boost a ls1 u need low compression pistons, forged rods things that already come on the ford modular engines that can handle 900hp with the stock motor ls1s can only hold 600 safely

346ci vs 347 ford 302 bore. ls1 still puts better numbers on a stock block. You can spin the motor high and ls1s have such good flowing heads thats why cam only they reach over 400+rwhp(on a stock block with no boost). They made their race car the ford gt 330ci s/c couldnt reach 200mph stock. More expensive to and chevy reach it with a car half the price z06 with a (n/a) engine. tvs blower ford gt puts 630 rwhp.. heads and cam z06 puts 640+rwhp all motor no boost. ss camaro ls3 is zr1 foundation

@cruerocker2008 True, while the mustang is S/C the camaro holds a 1.1L advantage in displacement. So really all ford did was even that up without retooling the front suspension to accept the 5.4L, which was the cheaper route.
If you think about it, if Ford wanted to do that they could have just dropped in a Navigator DOHC 5.4 with 300hp to compete with the LS1s 305-310hp. You have to remember Ford already made the N/A DOHC 4.6L with 320hp, all it was missing was the torque to beat the LS1.

@jclarkesbcglobal They needed a driver upgrade then, a stock 98-02 SS will run door to door with an 01 Cobra and bolt on for bolt on the LS1 responds better. So unless your highly modded I doubt you're "walking" LS1s.
Look at the Car and Driver comparison on here between the Cobra, Ram Air T/A, and SS.
Also, you obviously had a 5spd Cobra...they're only offered with a manual transmission. 5spd from 93-01 (except the 00 Cobra R) then went to the 6spd in 03.

99/01 Cobras have 320 crank hp and C&D dyno tested a bone stock one to 271whp.
A 99/01 Cobra weighs less than a Camaro, the Cobra wasn't heavier than the F-body twins until 03.

NO it dosnt it puts 300rwhp+ im in a f-body club that hangs out with alot of people and did alot of research maybe a auto on a mustang dyno put 280.. why compare a non s/c cobra to a ls1 when you cant compare the two. cam only ls1 with suporting mods make 400rwhp do that with any new ford straight from the factory n/a just with a cam swap i promise you to make that cobra a 400rwhp would take alot of motor work.

If you watched the video you'd know it was a brand spanking new Mustang GT and a brand spanking new Camaro Z/28, which was rated at 305hp but really was putting out roughly 330hp...like I said the LS1 was an under rated motor in the Camaro. These cars were tested by car and driver...they don't mention what kind of dyno they're running in the video.

Never said 03 cobra cant make good hp numbers. i would sell my ss for a stock 03 cobra because they have good power and always like that body style But not because its faster. port the blower and he can get up to 500rwhp but its already supercharge. Its like the ls9(zr1) makes way more power at less boost than an 03 cobra or gt500. you add a intake and a tune and you have way more than 600rwhp just that alone. Buts its a ls3 with a supercharger. All your doing is boosting the supercharger.

Not really, GM tuners can't turn the boost up on ZR-1s without running into cooling problems...Plus a LS9 (23k engine) costs 2k-6k more than a whole used 03 Cobra....so you really can't compare an engine to a whole car.

i love ls1s because you can do so much with them. Boost them or do just cam and head swap and make good numbers for the street. It will always come down to being a personal preference on what car you rather have. My 408 ls1 is really fast and even beat a whipple cobra but ive seen other ls1s(408) lose to whipple cobra because of the combo they run.(not all ls1(408) are the same. I always wanted to race a twin turbo cobra from a roll me of course on spray. i think ill jump it hard but walk medown

I've also driven 3 cobras(97,98,03), a bunch of GTs and my ex g/f had a 97 T/A 6spd....So like I said I have respect for both Mustangs and F-bodies having been around them my whole life.

@dkill429 I'm sure Chevy could make just as much hp as the new Ford 5.0 if they went the DOHC route. GM has their camaro with a 300+hp DOHC 6 cylinder. They could do the same with a V8 if they wanted to. GM sticks to tradition and used an American Chevrolet pushrod V8. But remember though, to upgrade a DOHC V8 cams you are going to have to buy four cams plus more springs.

@leadsailz you might get close to or even get 300hp with some 4 and 6 bangers.but N/A(non boosted) 4 and 6 bangers have a REAL hard time makin the same amount of torque as they do in HP.lol,small block ford V8's make more torque than HP like 98% of the time.lol.thats something you almost never see with 4 and 6 bangers(non turbo).you can get 1000hp out of stock cams with a turbo on a 32v v8.turbo can close any HP gap.

with a turbo you can get almost any hp out of any engine. I've got an Grand National that would smoke the shit out of any DOHC "with turbo or not" car with my turbo 6 cylinder, just saying GM is just as capable as any other car manufacturer The new V6 Camaro has 316hp could gain almost 30hp with long tube tuned headers, considering the Ford v6 will not gain as much Hp. @leadsailz that grand national is a pushrod v6 engine.that means that the 3.7L D.O.H.C. ford engine moves lots more air than the old school pushrod engine.the grand national gnx only has 280-290hp stock.and thats with a turbo.lol.the new v6 stang has 305hp without a turbo.nuff said.on 7 lbs of boost,the v6 stang would have 455hp.lots more than a stock grand national.D.O.H.C. makes more hp on lots less boost.sorry

@dkill429 Also the new mustang V6 probably runs high compression. If you didn't boost and high compression don't mix. I've ran up to 24psi on the stock bottom end with only forged pistons and a two bolt main. BTW the GNX ran 13's from the factory floor, the new V8 mustang runs 13's.

@dkill429 That is in 2002 btw, LS2 is way better and can handle over 900 hp on the bottom end because of a six bolt main, the LS motors are the number one most purchased motors and the most favored motor to modify. The new 5.0 parts are going to be expensive to buy and to work on.

@dkill429 7psi IS NOT safe on them b/c they have 11:1 compression. thatll be their biggest downfall. LS1's are 10:5 to 1 but the stock heads can be ported to lower the compression all the way down to 9:8 to 1. and stock LS1's can hold up to 9, thats right, 9psi w/o a thing done to it which is good for 445rwhp in Fbodies. "leadsailz" was right about one thing, LS engines are FAR cheaper to modify b/c they have half the parts rotating. you dont see 6 second pro cars using DOHC do you? exactly.

@dkill429 Not true about the headers, the reason be is that the exhaust manifolds on the camaro are really restricted and using headers will increase more flow, that is why you gain so much. The new mustang cannot be said for because WE do not know the complete engine specs yet. The 3.6 is being revised and will 316hp. My GN isn't stock 9.90's for a street drivin car isn't slow, point being you can do anything with boost ;).
