Nice Video and nice images. Man there is a lot of criticism about you from people who most likely walk right past these people and would never even think to say hello. Good job!
I think they are very, very nice. Kind of a modern day Dorathea Lange (sp?). Great work. And... I believe the people enjoy the recognition. Forget the negative comments.
You piece of shit. You go to take photo's of these desperate people, overlay this garbage music as if you give a shit, and then preface their photo's with the text 'beautiful people'. Get the fuck out of there you moron. Man I can't stand photographers some times.
@NailimiMontesi Uhm .. fuck you, asshole? They are out there, talking to the people and making them comfortable. What the fuck have you ever done with the homeless? These people obviously enjoyed the time they spent with the photographer and his videographer, so seriously - fuck you.
@NailimiMontesi What the fuck is wrong with you? "You go to take photo's of these desperate people, overlay this garbage music as if you give a shit"? Seriously? How do you know they don't "give a shit"? Even the simple act of taking pictures and making a video show how bad some lives actually are is more contributing than you sitting in your chair and talking shit about others on the internet. Atleast they're doing something. What are you doing?
Usually the arm chair photographers that say negative things of others, usually have never taken a photo in their life. If you are such experts, then show us your work? Proof is in the pudding!
you have done a great job taking these photos of these people. Wonderful effects on each of them.
and I do not care if the video work was not as professional as some would like. It was very effective. Thank you for bringing these faces to us in such a great way
I think this is great. I see a lot of negative comments on this but if these were paintings there wouldn't be as many of those. I don't care if you painted a portrait or if you photoshopped with HDR or whatever it's still art & very good art at that. Thank you for the vid.
I appreciate the photo story, highlighting the unfortunate to show their beauty and character, but using HDR hides that with editing, if you say they are "beautiful people" then you shouldn't have to over edit them to make them look good, leave them the way they are
@photoallergic Yeah their HDR is definately unnatural. But don't hate on HDR automatically, it's very useful when done properly and it's basically what you're own natural eye uses.
@bergerlemur I don't hate all HDR, just visible HDR. HDR is nothing new. I do it in the darkroom with technology from the 60ies.
On the human eye: Yes and no. The human optical processing is capable of evening contrasts out quite well. But the human eye is capable of capturing contrasts of about 20 stops (globally) in the first place, while a digital camera only captures 10 stops (locally) at most, and a monitor displays even less. Just flattening contrast is therefore not the same mechanism.
@photoallergic oh, and: The whole HDR-hype stems from "not losing precious shadow/hightlight detail". Thing is: Our vision does not care about detail that much, especially in peripheral view. Contrast however is important for the human visual perception. So if you have to decide between a flat scene with rich detail or natural contrast with less detail, i recommend the latter.
If its a study on the effect. Bravo. You managed to use photoshop to make crap photos look even worse. If its a study on the subject mater. Well done. You have done nothing more than to lift the individual into a mere faint caricature of themselves and worse still, nothing of the real individual and his / her real plight (if any). You place something on the internet, its open to critique. Get over it.
When I was in photography school my instructor forbade us from photographing less fortunate people (aka homeless people). Unless you're a photojournalist doing a public awareness exhibit or story on the plight of homelessness you're really exploiting them. "Let's go see if we can find some less fortunate folks"? And after thet let's go to Starbucks and have a latte.
@BooBoo0818 Absolutely right, could not have put it any better. Taking photographs of poor people on the street is not "deep" or "art" or "photojournalism", it's just plain old social voyeurism. "Oooh, look how poor he is, really makes you think". Nope, just makes me sick. Especially when combined with hipster crap like HDR or lomos.
if you want to see great photojournalists who don't need to lie with photoshop filters, check out James Nachtway's work, or any human subject journalists for National Geographic. They would never pander with such exaggerated filters. They have been trained to see the world for what it is, without the MTV style glitz we can't seem to separate ourselves from. These are the witnesses who hold testament.
...all these comments about how "we can see into the souls of these people-" jeez...
@downthestreetteam actually, mozo901 is right. when you shoot enough in demanding light situations, you learn to hold your camera a certain way and it becomes habit, it's not like you think "hey, I'm in daylight where my shutter speed is so high i can't screw this up with hand shake, so I'm going to hold my camera the most unstable way possible." These are good pics by an amateur who's untested and will have to learn through failure, which is what we all do, but he IS holding his camera wrong
this touched me... look at the old man smiling, u can see most of his life sorrow, got used to be alone and makes a smile on his face a lil bit of attention. I wonder why some ppl deserved to be sad :( a single photo tells a whole story.
Maybe spend more time on the technicalities of actual photography rather than spending time on photoshop? They look over sharpened and have no sense of the humanity of the individual.
@gankomule I disagree, the effect gave what would have been ordinary photo a breath of life showing the details like being in real time. Was more touching in all.
@gankomule i totally agree. as a matter of fact, if you look at Dragan's work, NONE of it is vignetted and sharpened and tweeked as much as this stuff is. Most of Dragan's work doesn't even have this bullshit effect that filters were created for.
And don't you love how people who have no idea of what they're talking about feel compelled to tell you that YOU don't know what you're talking about?
love how you do photos and the look how do you change the coloring and look on photoshop? i been wanting to learn this and dunno what exactly to call it but love it
I find this very interesting as my art background has shown me that there is no new ideas but only connections with "the old" to " the new". Look further into the meaning of the word Dragan and the premise of this video becomes more apparent. " dear" . This is how they may feel towards each other ? The connection I made was that there was "over post processing" but was that not done for a reason? All the models today and the magazines do exactly the same but do we question it so quickly?
@chikenbone2 actually, Dragan's exaggerated style came out in his compositions involving his choices of lighting, lenses, colors, set design, and his subjects over-the-top expressions. Rarely did he go hog-wild with the contrast/sharpening tool. David Lynch was such a subdued persona that the sharpening and contrast are quickly noticeable.
Although some of the images were on the right track, it just seemed over-done.
Especially where some of the images were trying to convey a different message than: grungy homleess person - Ex. woman laughing, but the post processing is totally against that motif
@peopleofdetroit Theres nothing noble about being a complete DICK! with no compassion for human beings! and complete ass holes are hard to find but you my friend are one, congrats! how is life working out for you?

@jvrsexy A lot of it relies on the camera and lens. I would say lighting set up but these are clearly not "set up" photographs. So he does a GREAT job of post-processing work.
@Exupery1976 Of course its going to look fake, its an EFFECT! which involves the decrease of tone variation in the subject in order to create sharper images, causing it to look less photo-realistic. Also, if you knew about HDR, it does not look "realistic" on people, it creates a surrealistic kind of view. This is great for making a great impact photography, like he is doing. Also, anyone can hold the camera any way they can, how ever they feel most comfortable doing it. learn your b4 u hate.
Typical All American BS. Starve their asses until they look photogenic, then play condescending clap-trap background touchy-feely music to add a touch of good'ol USA pathos. Well, it works well in Iraq....
@castletriglav Thanks for making this such an excellent two-fer. I came here for the Dragan effect, and I get the Dunning-Kruger effect as a bonus. As you have so aptly demonstrated, stupidity is not entirely voluntary. (Nor, for that matter, is mental illness, and much of addiction is self-medication of chronic depression or a bipolar disorder.)
when u first learn this effect its hard not to max it out, but try backing off the fill light/ recovery down a little bit on some of these, keep it tastefull. :) otherwise great work!
@ribenawrath some are good but yeah hdr ...ish. the dragan ones are clean sharp and although they do look edited it still makes you wonder. regardless reallly nice photographs.
@spaccomatto Great video! I do something similar, but not as good, by using Photoshop and Topaz Adjust. I would like to if there is a tutorial by whoever took these great photos.
It's disrespectful and stupid. You don't care about those people. You use them for your willing subjects so you can stand their with your POS digital camera, get up in their faces like a dork, take their headshot, then overprocess the crap out of the photo until it looks like a bizarre cartoon. This guy probably thinks he's a photographic genius when someone has a little blood on their face, or a fly. You are really doing something of greatness....let me tell ya. Sad and stupid.
@RewardHonesty I couldn't agree more. Why ruin the pictures with that horrible "dragan effect" (wow you can drag the clarity slider in lightroom to 100%, or use highpass wrong in photoshop).
awesome video! but i'm irritated by some of the comments. i hope people can understand no one is obligated to provide free tutorials. this video owner is generous enough to share his photography journey already. usually, we can only see the resulted photos and would wonder how and where did they captured the photos. if you're eager to learn the post processing techniques, u can just put in a little effort by searching tutorials from other youtube videos or go take a photography lesson.
@TooHuman Looks like a pretty beast sized camer and L lens. Hardly a cheap setup. I'm not saying what was done here is a beautiful thing. He found willing subjects to capture some photographs. He doesn't owe them anything but a thank you and maybe a handshake. I think the photo's look very toony but at the same time they appeal to me for some reason. I'm not a huge HDR advocate by any means because as stated before HDR recoveres mediocre photos in a form that grab your attention only.
so much emotions in this video and photos... effect is overpowered anyway, but for me it doesnt matters, but the people, the music... wow... pure emotion
The one at 3:41 isn't bad but most of them are creepy.
magic12ernie 21 hours ago
Destroying a photo with HDR isn't an effect. It doesn't display skill or talent, only just that you know how to max out a couple of sliders.

gave them dignity and honor and VALUE!
A wonderful gift during Christmas that we all need to be reminded of that these
people in the streets are our brothers, sister, mothers, fathers, childen, and grandparents. Your work was very emotional...LOVED IT.

HDR is for assholes who resort to it to make their mediocre pictures look good. Nice exploitation of homeless people too.

when u first learn this effect its hard not to max it out, but try backing off the fill light/ recovery down a little bit on some of these, keep it tastefull. :) otherwise great work!

I hate to say it, but not the dragan effect. Just fake HDR. The dragan effect is a very good, but very extensive studio lighting setup.
ribenawrath 11 months ago
@ribenawrath some are good but yeah hdr ...ish. the dragan ones are clean sharp and although they do look edited it still makes you wonder. regardless reallly nice photographs.

@spaccomatto Great video! I do something similar, but not as good, by using Photoshop and Topaz Adjust. I would like to if there is a tutorial by whoever took these great photos.
Thanks for posting, was a real treat!

RewardHonesty 1 year ago

Great pics, but I find disrespectful the fact of putting a 500 bucks camera in front of someone like them. I dunno, mixed emotions in here...
TooHuman 1 year ago
@TooHuman Looks like a pretty beast sized camer and L lens. Hardly a cheap setup. I'm not saying what was done here is a beautiful thing. He found willing subjects to capture some photographs. He doesn't owe them anything but a thank you and maybe a handshake. I think the photo's look very toony but at the same time they appeal to me for some reason. I'm not a huge HDR advocate by any means because as stated before HDR recoveres mediocre photos in a form that grab your attention only.
