  • I'm doing fine now, without you Jacqui...

  • Sandra Dee Lawson.

  • Its hard to lisiten to this song but at the end you do feel better about yourself, the other one is the one that is lonley

  • @1themeko

Yes this song shows that there IS life after the end of a relationship! The lead singer sounds like a young Luther Vandross.

  • Its hard to lisiten to this song but at the end you do fee better about yourself, the other one is the one that is lonley

  • Doesn't get any better...just a shame that the group didn't have the foresight to stay with the Philly producers used here.

  • Separated by thousands of miles... She and I talked over the phone every day for four months and within a few weeks of our planned first meeting she gave herself to another man on new years eve night.. i was crushed when i learned about what happened but i am doing better now... thanks for this music video it has helped me to move on with my life.

  • great music !!!!!

  • The bass line is from the greatest bass player bernard edwards from the group chic( the best ever) nile rodgers the guitarist and bernard met each other in this band! They became friends and formed the band chic

  • @sharonebrecht Interesting lil factoid there...is that correct? wow

  • @sharonebrecht Hey, Motown had a pretty good bass player in James Jamerson.

  • this is a great song

    never will forget it

  • i was 3 when when i heard it

  • NYC hit #17 in Billboard, 6-23-73. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • 1973, the 11th grade. Wouldn't it be nice if you could actually take a vacation to the past?

  • I know somebody has a video of them singing one of my favorite songs..

  • First time I heard this group thought they sounded Like the Spinners.Been searching for this record more than 20 years.

  • This is philly sound record, when it came out I thought it was the spinners . it had that thom bell sound. I finaly found it it was by a group called new york city.... it was greatttt. this was a top philly grove hot!! I Belive it was about in 1972/73. gooood music .... This was 2 years before that dreaded disco music came on the sene in the united states.

  • @no14topfan .. Disco was not "Dreaded"... it started out beautiful. The Philly Sound WAS Disco in its infancy... unfortunately it was picked up, stripped down to a drum machine, commercialized and ruined... oh but between '72 and '77... AHHH Yeah!!!!

  • Motivation

  • i remember this song when i was in high school

  • i like to play this song for my X wife... becuz im doin fine withourt her now !!!!!!! ha! ha!

  • 1973

  • 15 years of age, back seat of the school bus, everyone blasting this one out as we went home, good days.

  • I remember this song from my high school graduation in 1973. I though I would never find this song thank you whoever you are for posting this song.

  • AWESOME song... bring back Disco !!!!!!

  • @slickcitynites This was not a disco song!

  • @takemeback2 Ditto!

  • Memories, memories......thx 4 sharing!

  • thank you!

  • this is a great song!! i remember this when I was little and dancing and singing to it!

  • remember when this came out. would love to be young again.xxx

  • Excellent song never get tiered of listening to!!! thanks for posting

  • @lottie6200 yes I agree!! Love the beat!

  • This was a hit in my high school days, oh such fun and oh my the boy toys

  • thank you for posting....wow

  • Produced by Thom Bell of Mighty Three Music:The other two being Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Listen closely and you'll see the similarity to the Spinners which Thom produced as well. Philly Soul in the House !!

  • @Ruffrob Never noticed that before, but you can certainly hear the influence of Bell, Gamble & Huff... This HAS to be one of the top one-hit wonders songs of all time.

  • @namvet12 Not just an influence -- Thom Bell himself produced and arranged this LP. Unless I'm mistaken, he also co-wrote this song.

  • This song should've come out in 1976. In 1975, NYC was on the brink of bankruptcy. I believe Abraham Beame, was mayor at the time(I was away at the time,in the military). We applied for Federal help (bailout money), but the Ford administration would have none of it, so through some Draconian cuts in services, hiring freezes etc, and a genius named Felix Rohatyn, we pulled through. The cast of Saturday Night Live, could've sang this as an answer to those who "walked away" from us in '75!

  • @Carvinter Very interesting insight here...How is it that you know so much about this song? Just wondering...Take Care

  • @mrob75 I've always been an amateur history buff of U.S. (particularly NYC). This was obviously before the internet, so my parents used to send the Daily News to wherever I was stationed, so I followed this and other stories avidly. Plus, the name of this group particularly caught my attention Still a catchy tune, eh?

Best to ya, and thank you

  • @teehonky ....and modest with it I see.

  • still me not break me never

  • This is a classic.

  • Comment removed

  • One of the best one hit wonders

  • We used to dance to this song at college when this song came out. Wore the album out.

  • Another great production by producer Thom Bell!

  • This is one of those songs that you love the very first time you hear it. Doesn't matter when that might be. It's timeless. It just "works", through and through.

  • if i recall New York City WASNT doing fine in 1973....the state was BANKRUPT....i was doing REAL good by the way, if i lost one girl, i had 6 replacements ...god i was GOOD!! DOODOODOO

  • @teehonky TOO funny!

  • @ladyjae65 but i was TOO SEXY

  • the b-side to this record is another classic ,say it ain't so.i wish they put that on youtube.

  • Lovley song , brings back plenty memories from the good old days !!!

  • but you never heard a word I said, you kept on stepping never turning your head. How many times has that happened to you?

  • oh man, the memories. the good old days. jeez....just living life the way it should be lived. simple , laid back, easy with not a care in the world with a lot of love. those days are gone, but the memories stay.....damn.

  • @goldenseal75 You have a good memory. IDFN was indeed climbing the pop chart in the May-June 1973 time frame. The song peaked at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending June 23, 1973. It most likely did even better on the R&B chart.

  • This is pure all time class. Its so good it would make a stone monument weep. Respect to you for posting, and also all the ex members of an amazing group.

  • I agree DawnHills you had to be there I sure was. Believe or not I have this 45 I'm doing fine now. Thanks for posting.

  • I remember this song May or June of 1973, end of 8th grade!!!

  • Not sure if this was mentioned before, but, when the group auditioned the tape of this song before the record company, they had them replay it over and over, just in pure enjoyment while they signed them.

  • @jmasalle

    Great post!

  • @Rigmeister9 thx!

  • A masterpiece. A shame that the group split from their Philly producers after this, obviously.

  • Thank you

  • this song was the bonb

  • this is the song i sent to my ex wife

  • @twixbits I got this played on my radio station to my ex fiance after we split perfect choice

  • Wow! I had forgotten about this wonderful song! Love it!!!!

  • top notch tune...when i bought this 7"i never stopped playing it ......it just WAS AND STILL IS MY FAVORITE TUNE !!!...many thx

  • A great classic Check out the version by the Pasadenas Nice and Soulful Too!!!!!

  • Love it Love it Love it! Classic with the greatest of memories!

    Thank you rocketbrain2 for posting!

  • great little timeless tune thank's for posting : )

  • My mom used to play this song alot and I always thought it was the spinners that made this song.....Learn something new everyday:)

  • this video is sick im only 12yr olds im a cardiff city fan welsh to i die and beyond the grave

  • mite be a 1 off but ahh the memories

  • Bring back so many memories..I love it!!!

  • 1 hit wonder in Billboard. Hit #17. God bless!

  • I remember when this song came out at the same time the Spinners released "Could it be I'm falling in love?" I bought the Spinners album because it was all the money I had. I was 12. And New York City never came out with anything after this, so I wonder what their album was like? Great song though.

  • i am sure the Detroit Spinners did this version

  • What a great song. Still sounds fresh after all these years a good song to dance to!!

  • Where are these guys now. I met them in The Bahamas in the mid 70's. Good guys they did a fantastic show.

  • classic thom bell track from 1973 !!

  • does anyone else agree that the pasadenas did a better job of this? suckerrz ya wrong!!! if its not broke dont fix it!!! top tune!! thanx for postin!!!

  • @dreadedlurgy I love both versions of this track, one has to remember that this version "New York City" is a budget cut vinyl. "The Pasedenas had a lot more money spent on video and sound.

  • @gotobedandtickler hi, just coz the pasadenas had more money to spend on their version doesnt mean its better! they are following in the steps of others! all they can do is add a nice video and presentation. they cant outdo the original vocals! well thats the way i see it anyway! we are all entitled to our own opinions. :D

  • lco-written by thom bell. like some of the spinners' cuts, the female backing vocalists are more prominent in the mix than the actual group. GREAT song...

  • Without any doubt whatsoever this is the best song in existence. No other song comes anywhere near it.

  • Love this song, I thought it was the Spinners.

  • @ladyjae65your not the only one thought the spinners done this song trust me!!

  • Anyone know if this is a young Luther Vandross on lead?

  • May 1973 i was a freshman in high school..wow this song rocked my world and is still one of my top 10...

  • FANTASTIC post! I'm loving it! Thanks to hrpman for sharing and to rocketbrain2 for posting it!

  • was this produced by the same producer who produced the spinners just curious

  • I was thinking the exact same thing. It kind of sounds like "Then came you" with Dionne Warwick.

  • @marqualius yes, this sound as was the case with the stylistics is vintage THOM BELL AND LINDA CREED. YOU HAVE A GREAT EAR!!!!!!

  • Brilliant.70s soul at its best.KTF

  • I heard this song in a Quizno' s in Schaumburg, IL today. OMG, I used to love this song! Hadn't heard it in years.

  • Excellent song thanks for posting it!!!!!

  • great , great , song thanks for posting

  • Brilliant song, such sad memories, but yeah, I'm doin fine now----no thanx to you bitch----

  • DISCO.!!!!!

Hay, Platform Shoes, Kipper Ties, Flairs, Long Pointy Collers, Weird Haircuts, Check Jackets. They were the days.!!! lol.

  • You forgot the the flares! and boy didn't we think we were cool!

  • No did,nt forget the flairs, but what I did forget was the Hi Karate and Brut. lol.

  • Sorry saw it afterwards, but do you remember 'Demin- for the man who doesn't have to try to hard' I bet it would smell revolting today!

  • Yep, demin, hey but they were the days, your 1st drink at a party WOODPECKER CIDER, and PARTY 7.!!! pmsl.

  • But don't forget to take your wet weather gear when opening the the party 7 - Watneys Pale ale or Harp Lager who would drink that shit today. One thing I remember doing (hope its not you) the one who thought he God's gift to women always shook his tin before he opened it!

Still a great friend of mine today one day i will tell him!

  • Hey I,m back in the 70s, this feels like a Life On Mars moment. Please let me go back there. ( Ya I too shook the party 7 cans, but they were never mine, whatever I found in the kitchen, I,ve been the cause of many kitchen re-decorations ) lol.

  • VERY VERY BEAUTIFUL

    Classic!

  • Goosebumps!!!!!!!!

  • One of my favourite records at the age of 15. The roots of Disco.

  • one of the sound tracks to my life. helped me to stand up nafter some body knocked me down. i survived and lived and loved again

  • Cool song! Glory to God forever!

  • The guy from this band was talking about michael jackson on bbc :'( x R.I.P MJ

  • I was 17, sitting handcuffed in a police car in Jersey and the cop was listening to this song on the way to the station, oh the memories

  • this is one of those tunes that keeps playing in your head long after it's over... and I don't care! Great song!

  • luther vandross sang with the new york city BAND...this is new york city...and yes!!! this song was produced by the legendary THOM BELL!!!!!!!!!

  • Did Luther sing lead on this track? If it was, it was his first body of work.

  • what great words to sing to a ex lol

  • sweet!!!

  • The could have been more than one-hit wonders, but chose to leave their Philadelphia producers, the ones on this cut. Huge mistake.

  • Although I enjoy the remake by the Pasedenas, this New York

City original is still the best. NYC should have been a lot more than a one hit wonder, in my opinion

  • Wow!Almost forgot about this oldie and goody!

New York City captured the 'sound of Philadelphia' perfectly!

  • This is one of my favorite songs by a one-hit wonder. What a forgotten gem! A Spinners sound-alike that just as smooth & silky as they were. Too bad this is rarely played on oldies stations.

  • i hear this song all the time on 92.1 FM in Vineland, NJ

  • i hear this song a lot on 104.7 KDES FM in Palm Springs

  • The reason this sounds so much like the Spinners is that this recording and the Spinners share the same producer;Philly great Thom Bell and MFSB ,the house band for Philadelphia International Records. Their name threw a lot of people off.

  • Do the Americans realise how big their souls groups, were in the 70s in the UK.Records like these were huge floor fillers, absolutely brilliant.

  • Doubt it.

Another superb track. More into Northern myself, but this is the roots sound of soul.

  • Thank you America for all the great music you have produced over the years. I love it!

  • very very good song!

  • Spring 1973 in Jr. High School ( some schools are called Middle School) anyway I thought this was the Spinners, but it is the group "New York City"

Beautiful Song. To my knowledge they only made 2 albums, so much competition back in the day, they did not do much later. Tthe era of the 1970's up to the early 80's was the greatest sound.

  • Okay so we've all heard the original version posted here by New York City, and some of is have heard the great cover version(but this one's still better!) by the Pasedenas. Does anyone know if there are other versions by other performers out there? As most of us know, VERY few songs exist in only one or two recordings. So, if anyone knows, please reply. Thanks.

  • since my wife left i like this even more.

  • and so is she!!! lol!!!

  • A happy song indeed! It just shows that there IS life after the end of a relationship! Plus,

I reallyDIG the Philly Soul genre!

  • First it was Chicago.......Now it's New York City! These groups after American cities! Great song by these guys!

  • The best revenge is to live well!

  • there's nothing better than the ORIGINAL of anything, and here's one of them! some of the best harmonies ever heard and sung!

  • One of the best soul tracks ever made, but relatively forgotten and unknown. Unfortunately, the group did not continue the collaboration with Philly combo Gamble and Huff, thus this was the only song they made that was special.

  • Oh yeah!! Remember this song real well. Came out as I was breaking up with my girlfriend at Norview High School in Norfolk Va. That "heffer" broke my heart.

  • started looking back to 1971 to 1974 records some greats here.remember buying this one, probably in the attic

  • I'm a 70's chic and I remember what a big hit this was on the east coast on WABC, DJ's Harry Harrison and Ron Lundy.

  • WOW :)

  • The 70s, how great were they? You HAD to be there, I was, it was fabulous. This song is so very there too, I danced around my handbag many a time to this.

  • @DAWNHILL "it was fabulous"

couldn't agree with you more <3

  • This is the best rendition of the song although the cover version by the Pasadena's was pretty good in it's own right.

  • grew up with my dad blasting this sunny afternoons speakers out the window wish i was there again boss track !!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm a Who fan, but there's something about this song that I absolutely love.

  • Oh how I remember this one! This song would always put in a good mood. For the longest time I use to think it was The Spinners. Man, how I miss this kind of music. Thank you so much for posting this song, it made my day.

  • I first heard this fantastic song way back in 1973 and it's remained my all time favourite for the last 35 years, no other song comes close.

  • Song iz great!!!

  • just love this song, great memories, great times

  • 1 of my all time faves. thanx 4 postin.

  • GREAT1

  • Anyone have them singing this song LIVE? I would love to see that ! GREAT SONG! Blast from the past! love it!

  • my inspirational song. gets me through any bs.

  • I'm 50 now but still want to dance every time I hear this. Fantastic!

  • Happy Birthday! I just turned 50 myself! PHEW!! I made it! :)

  • Congratulations! Many happy returns. "Keep on rocking".

  • Man it's hard to realize this song is over 35 years old!!!!!! Talk about one hit wonders, but a great record..thanks for posting..

  • Takes me back to my youth.

    Fantastic song!

  • What year did this song came out?

  • 1973. A remake by The Pasadenas came out almost 20 years later in 1992.

  • Thank You for your information

  • You're welcome. The cover version by The Pasedena sounds a lot like this one, but with an added dance beat. The Vocals are almost identical. Not much difference. Agree?

  • Talk about your really obscure groups. I never heard of this group until recently.

  • I heard somewhere that the group New York City was actually from Philadelphia and not New York.

  • I do not know, but this is the Philly sound of the '70's at it's best.

  • great just great ; haven't heard this in at least twenty years ; did i say GREAT???
