@KurtRileyOfficial We all know that Elvis recorded a bunch of crap during his short life but these Sun recordings are the best rock n roll songs of all time IMHO. Hard to believe that there are only 2 guitars and bass on some of them - e.g. Mystery Train - which is arguably the best of all - and that this exquisite sound was invented by these guys fooling around trying to find something new in Sam's studio. Over half a century later they sound as fresh as ever.
@zthetha The Sun era was great but hardly Elvis at his best. Indeed from 1956 through to 1977 there was little interest in Elvis' sun recordings. People were more interested in his latest releases. He sang few sun songs in concert and when are you lonsome tonight, its now or never and the wonder of you were topping the charts all over the world it was those recordings the public were lapping up, not good rocking tonight.
@zthetha I'm not suggesting it is, but how important would the sun sessions be regarded without what followed? They are important because they paved the way for what followed. Also, to suggest Elvis' first five singles are better than his entire body of work from "heartbreak hotel" onward is a hard pill to swallow when you consider all the great songs he made fromk '56 onwards, from "all shook up" to "hound dog" to "I got stung" and even the big ballad numbers. Thats the Elvis that changed music
@FabFM In the early 50's there were a number of young musicians feeling their way towards what became rock n roll. Hank Williams had given c&w an edgy, harder feel - Little Richard did the same thing for r&b.- and black musicians like Fats Domino were bringing a New Orleans jazz feel to the mix. What was truly remarkable about Sam Phillips' studio was that it became a crucible where Elvis blended these quite distinct, racial styles under Sam's creative influence literally 'inventing' r&r.
@zthetha Yes-all true, but also irrelevant in the debate about elvis first five singles apparently being better than his entire output from 1956 to 1977.
@zthetha I think Sam got too much credit. It was his receptionist who remembered Elvis and talked him into giving him a shot. Also, if you look at a lot of the great recordings of rockabilly from this era, you will find a largely ABSENT Sam... the Engineer Jack Clement, however, was always around and working with the artists, getting their sound. Jack Clement also discovered and first recorded Jerry Lee. Jerry lee's first 5 records for SUN had no bass guitar, a little trivia, all left hand!
@buddimack He needed the money to keep sun records going, he would have never been able to make elvis the global star RCA did. $35,000 in '56 was the same as a quater of a million dollars now. Maybe he should have asked for more, but he needed the cash at the time.
What a cute song ! This is an early one for Elvis. The guitar is great..Our Billy Fury (The English Elvis) recorded this and it was his 1st or 2nd demo the quality is a bit rough but it's still an amazing version. RIP ELVIS RIP BILLY. You are missed.
Has anyone on here read Keith Richards' autobiography? He describes a portion of this song as the only sound he's never been able to recreate on guitar. Being musically illiterate, I have no idea what section he's talking about. Do any of you know where it occurs (a desription in minutes and seconds would be very helpful)?
Scotty Moore's guitar break - wow. Keith Richards of Rolling Stones used to insist they played this very early in their career to the horror of the trad' blues crowd. In late '62 - their 1st gig at The Marquee a drunk top of bill Cyril Davies told them to f*** off to the delight of club owner Harold Pendleton who hated them. Keith swung his guitar at him & they didn't play there again for serveral years.
jackiej61too - for being illerate..well you heard that. The pictures, melody and harmony, are in sync, precious, though, opposition to the lyrics. Boohoo! ing crying. I mean, can't you see the precious mutual exchange between Elvis and these savvy ladies; feelings, and playfulnes for Elvis. For suspended mystery, we suppse; Jewish producers look for "composed" "cute" "flirty," "not sexy" women for E.P. to be photographed. Opposite sex "intimate photos" were not introduced at this time. O.k.
Charisma personified. A true original. We didn't know what we had until he was gone. I heard all these oldies but besties when they first came out. I gasped each time a new one appeared. And I'm a bloke!
Great tune, Guitar players of 2009 and on, listen to scotty moore and if you can play it this way, you've got a great future ahead. But be honest to yourself. fantastic timing
Written by Stanley Kesler and Bill Taylor. Elvis recorded it December 18, 1954 at Sun Records. The Sun release didnt chart, nor did the RCA reissue in 1956. It was the B-side to Baby, Lets Play House. It is available on The Sun Sessions, For LP Fans Only, and The King of Rock n Roll-The Complete 50s Masters.
I've always admired this song so very much. All of Elvis' music and performances from the Sun Era equals pure gold. I'm still waiting for the FTD label to release their highly anticipated Book/3 CD set of The Sun Era. The three discs will include all of Elvis' Sun Era recordings. I'm so very glad that Kevan Budd will do the audio restoration and mastering for this FTD release. In my opinion, he's the most talented mastering engineer that works on Elvis CD releases. 10 Stars as always Jackie.
the beast at his best.

@FabFM The popularity of chart topping pop songs is hardly a barometer of musical excellence. I was speaking as a musician not a 'fan'.
