Why was Springsteen chosen to induct Dylan into the Hall of Fame? There is no comparison as far as songwriting. Bob Dylan is the greatest singer/songwriter that ever lived. Springsteen doesn't even rank in the top 20. Joni Mitchell would have been a better choice. Or Neil Young. Dylan admires Neil Young more than just about anybody.
Springsteen is at the forefront in these Hall of Fame events because Jann Wenner & Dave Marsh run them, and both want to suck Springsteen's dick.
@ApocalypsePlough i strongly disagree in so many areas, ranks are for know nothings, this is about the traditions of american music, and about heart and emotion, just let it be, dont be a hater and love, love.
Beatles "I'm a looser" was influenced by Dylan but Sergeant pepper was psychedelic rock has nothing to do with Dylan. Beatles were the only ones who combined perfectly rock sound with lyrics.
@MrPernell27 no, it was released in 66, NW was in the beatles rubber soul album from 1965 so it-s the other way around, besides dylan changed to electric guitars due to the beatles
@boliboy2299 actually Dylan talked about playing it in his hotel room in New York for paul mcartney and john lennon early in 65, before rubber soul was relased.
Uh, guys...Dylan was one of the pioneers of folk-rock (he & the Byrds invented this one), country-rock (John Wesley Harding)& Americana (the Basement Tapes) so saying that he's not influential as a musician is stupid & ill informed. And he was just as influential as a vocalist. Without him no Springsteen, Cohen, Waits, Young etc etc.
Dat be some kinda praise. I found myself in a crowd of like 80 thousand humans at a football stadium in '84 or so in downtown L.A. - Bruce was onstage - Clarence, Nils, the drummer from Conan, all the E-Street gang, not my cup of tea and I suffocate in crowds that aren't trees, so I hung in there for a little while, and everybody was booing Bruce and the band. I left and found out afterwords that the humans were chanting, "Bruuuuuuuuuce Bruuuuuuce"...
I'm from the Uk and springsteen has no rep over here whatsoever. Theres a few idiots that buy his Cd's and go to his concerts but their in the minority and culturaly, i dont really see how bruce can appeal outside of the US. Bob was a revolutionary, a huge part of Western popular music history, Bruce aint.
Oh and to the person that only talks to people over 50, please get offa youtube if you cant lend an ear cos the times they are a-changing ;) lol.
@Lily2U1515 I am over 50, and not from Jersey. Debate? DEBATE?? Debate a subject as subjective as music?? Who is better... Dylan or Bruce? Google subjective. Perhaps you might understand why few would want to "debate" taste with you, regardless of your old age. One would have to be, well, SENILE, to want to debate a point which cannot be won, one way of the other... since right or wrong is a matter of taste and not fact. But... don't let looking stupid stop you from challenging all comers.
@MongoTheLloyd the difference of opinion was not about "who is better" so perhaps you should read all comments in a discussion before you jump in with your "opinion" nothing you said was either constructive or intelligent.............but you are good at bashing someone, doesn't that qualify you as a mythical creature who lives under a bridge?
@Lily2U1515 It was close enough to it, you old hag. Anyone over 50 who wants to "debate" you... well, they deserve what they get. Wasted time dealing with an old cretin. But, I pretty much outlined that in my original response. I see no need to be redundant... even though you insist on it because you didn't get it the first time through. I see nothing constructive about insulting any who disagree with your rather dullard worldview, and then challenging all to debate. Now, FOAD, hag.
Anyway, with a final comment; this is amazing. It is fascinating to see the admiration that one legend has for another. Bruce beautifully sums up what Bob Dylan means. If you love music, you owe Dylan everything...
@infeted14 Dylan is a huge international legend, and no i wasn't being sarcastic. Springsteen is a U.S. "legend" for sure, I'm not downing him. Just my opinion that someone more international or a contemporary of Dylan might have been a better choice in my opinion, sorry y'all disagree. ( No comment on Americans thinking any American musician is larger than life based on record sales)
@Lily2U1515 I am from the UK...but Springsteen is an international legend too. Sells out every concert worldwide as Dylan does. I would say both are at very similar levels of recognition too.
@infeted14 now its my turn to say "are you being sarcastic?" Springsteen is as much a legend as Dylan? that is evidently a very subjective opinion, lets take a poll. Who is the more renowned musician?
@Lily2U1515 As to 'who is the more renowned musician', I think most experts would actually point to Springsteen...Dylan was an explorer, the first to break through and create songs that were 'out of the box'. It doesn't mean he was necessarily the best musician of all time. In fact I think he was more than a musician; he was a poet and a political commentator, which others like Springsteen have tried to follow. That's what made Bob Dylan the legend that he is, not necessarily his musician skill.
@TimmishTV he didn't write the poetry or make the political commentary separate from the music he wrote, Therefore regarding those as separate from his musicianship is a false premise. Added to that, he was not the first writing songs "out of the box." I think you might need to read up on American music before and after Dylan and his influences to clearly see that. You are way off base. My opinion. Springsteen more renowned, that actually gave me a chuckle thanks.
@TimmishTV dylan's accoustic guitar strumming is a good as anything springsteen's done musically, but I agree, Dylan was an artist and poet, more than a musician. Sprinsgteen is great - and more accessible - but Dylan is just a different league in terms of the influence he's had on changing music. Springsteen hasn't done that.
@Lily2U1515 "I like Springsteen and all but couldn't they have gotten someone bigger to induct Dylan?"
ShipwreckTownBand: "You're being ironic yes? If not, who did you have in mind? Gandhi? Jesus?
Well said! Dylan (in my opinion) is the father of good contemporary music, and Springsteen is his deciple. Over a career spanning 40 years Springsteen is yet to produce an album that isn't groundbreaking and emotionally charged. I don't think there could have been anybody MORE suited to the job...
@THthefirst I don't know why you're getting worked up here. I'm a massive Springsteen fan. To me, there has been no greater musician. But I can accept, as you also stated yourself, that Bob Dylan has had a greater influence and legacy on the music industry. And I think we should all be grateful for that. There should be no argument here at all...I don't understand. These are both legends of music and they have immense respect for one another. Why do we need to fight over who is better?
No other could have done it better--anywhere--ever. Thank you rockhall for sharing this with us. <3 <3 <3 Absofreakinlutely... This brought tears to my eyes and the best part of it---his genuine humility and devotion to the who he's paying tribute to; the king of lyrics himself, Bob Dylan.
trust Bruce Springsteen to be one of the few out there who can truly sum up and capture the true essence of Bob Dylan
