I think you are referring to the Emancipation Proclamation which only legally freed slaves in states that were still in rebellion as of Jan. 1, 1863. I think one of the reasons was that the war was dragging on for too long. It was felt by some (like Frederick Douglass) that the best way to beat the South was to hurt them economically. About 500,000 slaves walked off the plantations.

I think you are referring to the Emancipation Proclamation which only legally freed slaves in states that were still in rebellion as of Jan. 1, 1863. I think one of the reasons was that the war was dragging on for too long. It was felt by some (like Frederick Douglass) that the best way to beat the South was to hurt them economically. About 500,000 slaves walked off the plantations.

@NotMyBirthday What? Oh my goodness. No no no no. I was saying it's a typical tactic of the left to play the race card when disagreeing with a conservative. Of course slavery/discrimination, etc were HORRIBLE. No sane person would say slavery is good or didn't happen. It's a straw man argument to say a conservative wants to bring back slavery. Just like it's a straw man argument to say conservatives want polluted air and water. But our shining-star-of a president implied that.sigh

@Kaniela6759 Personally, I'm independent. I don't like politics at all because well no one will ever agree on anything. I just don't like this song. His so called forefathers were happy with people my color (I'm black) having no rights at all.
