Final random thought, I remember when the Cubs were thinking of moving Dunston from shortstop into the outfield just to make better use of his absurd arm strength. That guy used to look at the ball for a 5 seconds upon fielding it just to make the play at 1st interesting.
He had a great one, E.V. Dwight Evans was wonderful. Dave Parker had a cannon. For speed in getting the ball, quick release, making the right throw, accuracy, and the frozen rope it really is very, very hard to fade Ichiro.
I played at East LA College in the early 1980's and we had a coach, the brother of ex-USC football star Lynn Cain named Roger Cain and he could throw a ball on a line over 300 feet; no arc. Stronger arm than Vlad, Parker, Valentine, you name it. BTW, I played with Stanley Burrell on that team (he was a bench warmer). The world knows him better as MC Hammer.
Valentine could throw a ball through the moon! In 1975, the Expos manager Dick Williams immediately touted his rocket launcher as the best in league, comparing it to the legendary Roberto Clemente's. Montreal never forgot you Ellis. You are a part of are sport history.
@123459ization Only seen highlights but they suggest he had more than just the arm itself...great fielder over the course of a career. Guys like Canseco, erm...maybe not, but he was awful fun to watch.
Obviously, you commenters didn't watch a certain right fielder by the name of Dwight Evans growing up. As a fielding right fielder (He wasn't all that bad a hitter too.), "Dewey" parolled right field like none other. He also had the canon to prove it. Just look at his catch and throw in a video for game six of the 1975 World Series. And that's just for starters. The only one who comes even close to him would be Ichiro. And, like I said, that's close, not better!
Nice vid! I once saw E.V. make a sick throw from right to 3rd at Olympic Stadium. It was the first major league game I went went to. I was in the left field bleachers, so I got the cross-angle on the throw. It really looked like it rose on the way to 3rd. He had a canon for an arm.
i got the chance to see Barfield unload the cannon a couple times. One time Ricky Henderson was tagging a third and short fly to Right field. Henderson took 3 steps and went back to third. Bob Brenly was catching for the Jays. the throw couldn't have been more perfect if it was a strike thrown from the mound....Barfield has my vote as the best arm, although Evans, Valentine, Jose Guillen, have honorable mention....
Ichiro is a bad, bad man... But most of Ichiro's great throws that I have seen are him charging in full speed at a base hit. His famous throw from right to third was indeed a laser, but he was in shallow RF after charging a grounder when he threw. In this video, Valentine is playing at regular depth, unable to charge the ball at all, and throws a rope basically flat footed... I wouldn't doubt Ichiro has done something similar... but this throw from Valentine should not be underrated.
@JJaNt0122 He's right, Jose Guillen when he was with the pirates hosed out a runner tagging from 3rd base to home and the next guy who was at third who was gonna go tested his arm again. And again the guy hit what was suppose to be a sac fly and the runner only went a quarter of the way and then went back cause guillen threw a rope from the outfield warning track to home; no bounce! Guillen throws missiles but I also like Ichiro, Ankiel, Vladdy, and Bautista.
@JJaNt0122 Trenidad Hubbard is the current Rockies outfield co-ordinator, rates the Aussie arm as equal best he has seen in 10 years - the kid threw runner out from third going home from CF - said "he threw a strike from centerfield". Still a rookie but watch him in 3/4 years or so when he breaks into the bigs. Kandilas the name
Just remembered the agent is Fred Ferreira who signed Vladi to the Expos. He also signed Bernie Williams, Jose Vidro and heaps of others with other organisations..
There is a 20 year old Australian born outfielder in the Rockies minor leagues who throws 400 feet and close to 95 mph ffrom the outfield. The Rox outfield co-ordinator Trenidad Hubbard told me himself. The kid's agent signed Vlad as a teenager and rates the Aussie arm better at the same age. True. David Kandilas
Clemente and Dwight Evans were off the charts, Ichiro is easily as good, but the best I ever saw was Furillo and I´m surprised nobody mentioned him. Must be the age factor, and I´d love to hear from a few more card-carrying dinosaurs. Come on, guys, you´re out there, I know you´re out there.
@wilzusuki: No. Vladi was a chance to learn from an old Expos farm prospect (Expos farm was one of the best with Dodgers farm) but he was better in his head to accept this. Roberto Clemente was, is and will be a wonderfull player and a exemple to all gentleman in this world. It's not a Ellis Valentine tribute but just a moment to see one of the best talent ever seen in MLB.
It be good if you could show this at regular speed so we could get better feel for how hard he was throwing. Today I think Francour has the best arm. I think Jesse Barfield has the best arm all-time though. Mark Whiten, Bo Jackson and Larry Walker deserve some recognition also.
its true that being able to throw the far takes arm strength but the ability to throw the ball on a line at a low height is real arm strength because in order to do that you have got a lot of velocity on the ball..... no doubt a long arching toss takes strength but those tracer beams are the real mark for scouts
The MOST amazing sight in sports is a rightfielder throwing an absolute rope to third base or home plate ... on the fly! I'm SO fascinated, I'm going to write a book ranking the strongest rightfield arms of all-time.
I wish I could find a DVD that showcases throws like this.
i remember going to an allstar game and Ellis Valentine, Dave Winfield, Dave parker, dwight Evans and Reggie Smith had a throwing contest. it was great and most ay it was Dave Parker and Ellis Valentine who won the contest with the longest most accurate throws.
Eliis Valentine and Dwight Evans had the best arms from right field that I have ever seen (excluding my own, of course). Everone talks about Clemente, but his long throws don't look like frozen ropes. Parker, Dawson, and Winfield had very strong arms, but nothing like Valentine and Evans.
@joeyeff You're forgetting Jesse Barfield. Best arm I ever saw, and I remember all the guys you're talking about. Never saw Furillo, but his rep was fierce.
@joeyeff There is so little footage left of Clemente. Most likely you only see the famous throw from rightfield to thirdbase in the 71 Series. I saw Mays, Johnny Callison, Al Kaline and Roger Maris, Dwight, Ellis, Vlad, Awesome Dawson, etc They all had lighting bolt arms and are all fantastic, but talk to 100 baseball veterans and experts and the majority will always state Clemente. You had to see him to believe him. Dwight was close, so too Kaline and Callison.

Ok this is an amazing throw, but come on...The throw that Ichiro made is never been done before and never will.
Ichiro throws from RF straight, and i mean straight at chest level to third base like a fuckin RPG!
