the problem i have with gilbert is that he feels he has to play super fast shreds in all of his songs. Take a song of his like Radiator, my favourite Gilbert song, It starts off great, with a cool melody, then halfway through he starts speed shredding out of the blue and it kills the vibe of the song. I wish he kept it slow and complexed instead.
listen to a song like Tender surrender by steve vai, very slow whilst retaining complexities. Bear in mind that generally prefer Gilbert to Vai.
@Mrthouroug Well, that's a personal thought. When I listen to Paul Gilbert, I know what to expect. If I want something a little slower with more focus on vibrato and bending, I usually switch to Marty Friedman.
An artist can't always be everything you want him/her to be, but he has an image he needs to keep, or else people, like myself, would start to complain and say that he was better before. I like Paul Gilbert for his work. He doesn't always satisfy me but a lot of his work is pure quality
@BrUSomania i dont necessarily agree, paul doesnt have to play all of his songs the same way. why not just mix slow songs with the fast songs, problem solved.
@turnbacktime I'm not saying he has to play each song fast, which he doesn't do either, but if he'd stop doing it for an entire album, he would sort of lose his identity, in my opinion.
What I like about Paul is that he has the ability to mix slow with fast. There are many songs in which he plays slow riffs and rythms but ends up playing fast in the solo. "Waste of Time", "Marine Layer" and "I Am Satan" are some good examples of slower songs that are good (in my opinion)
@turnbacktime I am afraid you are wrong. You certainly haven't heard all of his songs if you say they all contain fast licks. However, fast doesn't mean bad. If it's just a bunch of scales played up and down all the time, ala Malmsteen, it's different.
@turnbacktime I already did, actually. "I am Satan", "Marine Layer", "To Be with You" (Mr Big), "Boku no Atama" and a lot of other songs from his more pop-like albums
Paul doesn't know Kiko's name? Kiko has been nominated for some of the same thing as Paul so I'm slightly surprised. Either way, they are both awesome.
He's so right about most people taking the simpler stuff in easier. Most people who don't play an intrument don't dig enough into the art which is music and instead end up with more "simple" music.
Green Day is a really "simple" band, and see how many fans they got.
Metallica plays simpler than Paul for sure and we can see how much popularity they've gained...
while Paul, a deeper musican, gets less attention for his extreme musical work because it's so complicated for them
@BrUSomania not really, look at Andy McKee's videos, and look how many views he gets. It has nothing to do with the complexities of the music, if it sounds good people will love it. playing superfast shreds with zero melodies wont get you anywhere (and i'm not saying paul does this because i love his music)
@turnbacktime By "simpler" I don't mean 'playing fast as fuck". Those who use their musical talent and want to make beautiful music instead of focusing too much on fame and money, are those that should get more attention. That's what I meant
@BrUSomania beautiful music will automatically give you fame and money, and those are the people who get the attention. just because so one is talented on the guitar that doesnt mean he'll produce good music. look at yngwie malmsteem, good guitarist but his music sucked unlike eddie van halen at the time, who wasnt as good but created far better music.
@turnbacktime "beautiful music will automatically give you fame and money". If you look at the mainstream music getting the attention nowadays, that's not true at all. People that are talented, ala Paul Gilbert, have both the gift of making passionate and originally creative music that sounds good and is deep at the same time. But the simpler music brodcast on TV and radio gets more attention.
I hope you aren't telling me that the whiny punk rock bands out there deserve all the fame they get.
@turnbacktime 30 seconds to mars and Simple plan, for instance, are bands that achieved their goal - to become famous - mostly because of the fact that teenage girls like how they look. Those kind of bands are the ones I'm referring to. Sure, they fit their genre, but relatively they are not that talented.
I feel some people are losing the grip on what music is all about. Many go for looks and effects instead of someone's pure talent to create something that feels good
@BrUSomania i just looked up one of those bands and i just saw that the lead singer is Jared Leto, LOL... thats the only explanation why that particular band is famous. (if you didnt know Jared Leto is a famous movie star)
@BrUSomania i just doubt i believe that a band like "A Simple Plan" sell more tracks than Paul Gilbert. I live in europe and i can honestly tell you that that band isnt well known anywhere in Europe/UK.
look at someone like Kurt Cobain, he wasnt as good a guitarist as van Halen/yngwie malmsteem, not even close. but he made better music with his guitar. it has very little to do with the complexities of music.
If Kurt Cobain had Gilbert's guitar skills he would've been a better musician though.
@Mrthouroug@Mrthouroug It's a subjective matter. I'd rather listen to Van Halen than Nirvana, if you asked me, but that's just how it is. Personally, I usually like music that is both passionate and has a nice contrast between slow and fast playing to give out a good feel.
It doesn't HAVE to be fast or very complex, but in many cases it gives a song a better identity and more details, when you combine the best of both the 'slow' and 'fast' worlds.
"complicated things have a hard time reaching everyone." So true it hurts. So many people don't know what they are missing with some of Mr. Gilbert's and others' work.
Hello! My friend, you are right ... you can not imagine what the music is bad here in Brazil .... rsrsrs. Good songs with Paul Gilbert only know of that has good taste.
