1. the cinema depicted is in Argentina not in Italy. As the author stated many argentinians understand italian well cause of their heritage.
2. The italian of the the "basterds" of course is terrible and also Landa has a very laughable accent.
2. people start to laugh around 0:30 cause of the gestures, totally out of context. In particular DeCocco's gesture in italian means something i could translate in "WTF?".
A lot of people in Argentina are of Italian origin, but I have a good friend who's from Argentina, and his Great-Grandfather was from Italy--his grandfather and father didn't speak one word of Italian. I think the generation that spoke Italian is long gone by now.
diane introduced brad as enzo "gorlomi" but he keeps saying "golaa-ame" same happens with eli she intruduced him as antinio "margheriti" and he keeps saying "margarete"
@nrdshbyntr Same here! Makes it so much fine hearign the audience reaction. I especially love the reaction when Dominic De Coco does his italian hand sign in the 1st minute :)
when I saw this scene I was thinking the entire time... wtf is up with brad pitts face?! its so subtle its obvious XD he has an awesome italian accent as well XD
Yeah I guess some people will say so or you can call it bad karma.
I think Tarantino did a good job to show a little how humane are everyone including Nazi. They are not 100% evil monsters like in some movies. They have a life, have parents and want to live a normal life. Yet you have these Basterds who are supposed to be good guys killing every Nazi they met, regardless of whose children they will end up behind. Well that's the horror of war. They will always be lots of losers.
@TKVip3r Yeah dude, maybe he just memorized the lines, but his accent is very good. And even if he doesn't speak a full italian I make you sure that an italian who listen Christop Waltz speaking basically notes that he's a stranger, but would understand anything he says.
supergirl yes, in the italian version brad pitt and the second italian speaks sicilian dialect (like godfather), instead the third speaks the dialect of Naples city. I prefer the original version too ;)
@Fonzie182 he doesn't, actualy. he said on a enterview that though he speaks italian in the movie he's not fluent. he just memorized it for the movie. he is fluent though in german, french and english!
TKVip3r - That doesn't mean Waltz didn't do well. You didn't get what Fonzie182 meant, I'll explain it to you: Waltz mimic/pronunciation of the Italian language was pretty good.
You are welcome.
------
Nice clip, Pitt's Italian is the funniest (so bad it's good lol). Love the irrepressible Italian hand gestures, always so random! lol
i myself though he spoke italian when i first saw it. when fonzie 182 said that he speaks italian pretty well i tought that he tough he was fluent hence my explanation
@mike007plun No, it's his own voice. Waltz doesnt speak Italian in real life though. He said the most important thing about this scene was to make the impression of being totally fluent even though he had no idea what he was saying.
Christoph Waltz in charge in this. But? Look at Brad Pitt's face -- his eyebrows -- his chin! He looks like he is smelling the worst STINK on earth in this scene. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!
i saw the italian version and the person who spoke the brad pitt voice he said bacio a mane means kiss my hand as the sicilian style from the godfather XD but i like the orginale version
Two: The accenting and language fail is on purpose. It's Quentin Tarantino making fun of the fact that people in most countries are at least bilingual and Americans tend to think English is all that matters.
The funniest part 4 me is, when the commander says he wants to hear the music in the worlds... LOL And the third guy, who is actually the third best in italian , is the only one who pronnunces his name well, and the commander says :bravo!!
Lmao im italian too but i havent seen the movie in italian yet...this is the best part of the whole movie!!! C'è mica il video in italiano di questi pezzo @nomerandom ?

Some cultural understading for non-latin viewers:

Is the audience really Italian? Because this film has Spanish subtitles.......
wilb6657 1 year ago
Cool to see how the Italian audience especially loved Tarantino's depiction of how Americans think Italians speak and act.
I wonder if German audiences gasped at the three whiskeys scene, realizing his mistaken gesture.
