  • you are horribly off beat

but for age you are good

  • nice play

  • JUMP!:)

    GO LITTLE MAN!

  • I'm really glad this is back up! - Corky

  • Thanks! Hopefully the fact we went through this, is yet one more piece of evidence that will eventually lead to the common understanding that those who cover songs in order to perform their own interpretation of their particular instruments part, constitutes fair-use.

  • I agree wholeheartedly, both as a fellow musician, a music teacher, and just a music lover in general. Besides, why punish a youngster for having talent? Even if the intent was to go after the parents, it's ultimately the kid who suffers. Neil has undeniable talent, and at his age, there's no need for him to learn of corporate greed by having uncaring "suits" pull his attempts at creativity. If he goes into the music business, he'll learn soon enough.

  • Amen! lol:)! also being a musician means hard work and hours of practice. this guy obviously practiced so much, and you retards insult his work. i as a musician, know what it is like to be made fun of. i played over 8 instruments when i was only 11.

  • Exactly! In my day, there was no YouTube to get feedback from the world! This is an invaluable resource for any kid trying to improve on his playing ability. There will always be those who just want to drag someone down, mostly out of jealousy or insecurity. I applaud any youngster or parent who posts a video in an effort to improve their abilities! Not being a drummer, all I can do is offer encouragement. As a musician and teacher, my hat is off to Neil and his dad! Rock on!! -- Corky

  • omg 4 his age hes good!

  • Wow, for 10 years old, hes pretty good :)

    Good vid

  • If you play in a small room with no head set you can seriously damage your ears. And the kid is ok at drumming.

  • i play drums and have never understood why they wear head phones

  • so he doesnt damage his ears??

  • "so he doesnt damage his ears??"

    That'd be the reason :-)

Actually, if you are in a large room, headphones aren't necessary, but in a small room (like the one in which this is recorded) headphones are important (perhaps litewright has only played in large rooms).

  • yeh i have the same problem in my room.. also if i wanna play along to track and just have ipod headphones or whatever i cant hear a thing.. so vic firth headphones ftw

  • do hot for teacher double bass! lol awesome kid!

  • get this kid some tama drums

  • Please... Buy that young boy a drum set of his own... From an experianced drummer.... He is awesome!

  • rough start but good job for your age

  • well done!!!

  • I remeber playing to this song alot.

  • Yaaaaaaaaaaaaa Van Halen "I said hey you! Who said that? Were have you been?"

  • I love seeing kids rock out to old school tunes. JUMP!

  • Awesome my friend zane is incredible he is a drummer. hes only 13 3 year and you could be crazy like him but you are great. Try Poundcake or Hot for teacher. Awesome job on jump though. Keep on drummin

  • wow kid... unreal! Keep it up man.

I am a singer/songrwriter and have played with the best. You will be one day! Keep practicing.

  • Great job!! Keep it up, looking forward to more..... rock on.

  • Hey guys, Sorry about the negative comment. My little brother was being stupid using my account name. Like I said, Sorry bout that. I think the 10 year old is really good, he will be in a major rock band someday.

  • I am a huge Van Halen fan and you are awesome on this video! With that said I thought and this is totally not a knock but you see more like a Phil Collins style drummer. Nothing at all wrong with that by the way, I love Phil. I just thought hey I should comment and tell him to do a version of "In The Air Tonight". Keep up the good work! And don't be affraid to try more Van Halen songs, Alex is one of the best no doubt!

  • Yo little man that was pretty cool!! Nice choice of song. Keep it up!!!

  • I bet you live at home with you mom, Dragon Warlord1, what a gay name. Go play your world of warcraft loser.

  • I bet he is the child of an incest or something.

What type of prerson would in his right mind say that to a very talenter ten year old kid?!?

Please seek healp, you have a problem. Do it for mankind

  • so now your rating how cute boys are?your gay.

  • gay you suck

    go to play warcarft nerd!!!

  • u are a big L Dragonwarlord, what a stupid name. Go play with your imaginary friends.

  • hey kid! u got a great future in music. i wish i had been your age when i learned how to play the drums. i was 18 then, now i am 33. keep it up boy!! congrats.

  • Great tune and great effort son. Keep it up!

  • hes kind of off a little. but still very good.

  • He did a good job with playing this, I really like how he's playing classics instead of hip hop and rap stuff.

If you dont mind, I'd have a couple suggestions. I listened to Neil play Fire also, and he used some of the same fills, and I thought how he could possibly broaden his use of the drums, and I thought of what my instructor had me do. Try just using the 12" 13" and 16" toms, snare, and bass, that will limit what he can do, but focus on creativity and what he can do with less.

  • "If you dont mind, I'd have a couple suggestions."

Don't mind at all, in fact grateful you took the time to comment. I agree completely with you comments. Neil does play a smaller kit at Church.

He is indeed coming up with more creative fills now (this was over a year ago) check his rendition of "Won't get fooled again", there are a lot of completely different fill patterns in that (although he does do the sweep fill at one point - he likes them :-)

    Thanks again!

  • Nice

But is this all you do :S

Make YouTube videos of you playing drums...

    Well its pritty sad ;/

Why dont you do other stuff than do this joina band

Well by the looks of things ypur god enough

i would use u any for a band

    it was good

    though

  • "Why dont you do other stuff than do this joina band"

Neil, is a member of his Church praise band (has been for 3 years) and is also a member of his school band (he plays quads).

  • well thts good

But he didnt answer my question why does he make videos

  • It's not "pretty sad" at all. He's just a great drummer with talent and he wants to show people :)

  • sometimes having too many drums can take away from growth. Other than that, he did a good job with playing. Keep it up and don't get sucked into the rap and hip hop stuff, keep it all rock.

  • Kids got some good rhythm

  • errr that's can't go wrong.. lol

  • as long as he's being original to where his heart takes him, he can go wrong. My son has been playing since he was a baby as well, and I hope I can see him doing this well @ ten.

  • this is great to see, not only a great young drummer, but playing something that makes you stick to what drumming is all about, not speed or crazy fills, but feel and time. Great job Neil, let it all hang out!!

also good to see your wearing your ear protection!!

  • Thanks for a great comment!

Yeah, not to denigrate the value of technique at all, but playing musically *is* what being a musician is all about. Neil will be delighted to hear that you find this arrangement to be musically pleasing (it's actually quite different than the original).

  • dude i agree to that. 80s music is so much better than current music.

  • couldnt agree with you more

  • shut the fuck up the kid is 10

and man u did a grate job i love it keep up the druming dont stop

  • "and man u did a grate job i love it keep up the druming dont stop"

    Thanks!

  • eddie was a drummer and look what hapend to him

  • I've already warned Neil not to marry a sitcom actress :-)

    No flames! I am joking...

Wedding Valerie was probably the smartest thing Eddie did (other than deciding that the drums were best left to Alex ;-)

  • I am simply amazed at how good this kid is! I love his appreciation of great 80's rock and roll. With the skills he has at his young age, I can only assume what he will be able to do as an adult!

  • Thanks for the kind words

  • hes good for 10 im 12 and ive been playing been playing since i was 2 and hes really good for his age

  • Since you were 2? wow!

Drummers often start early. Kids are cosmically in tune with the idea of hitting things with sticks (if they happen to be big shiny things that's just gravy :-)

I guess technically Neil first "played" at 9 months (I have a video tape of this that I should convert and post just for laughs), but he didn't start trying to play songs until he was 4, didn't start lessons until 5; and to date he still hasn't started practicing his rudiments (grrr...).

    Thanks for commenting!

  • dont worry it will come natural lol i still dont play rudements ive been playin for 3 years and i do them only if i feel like playin at night so i just get a pair of sticks and play on carpet lol

he will be a good drummer look to see ya around in 6 years

  • dumb question coming up...what are rudiments?

  • Rudiments are the fundamental patterns from which a drum piece is constructed. They need to be practiced a lot, since they will build the muscles in the forearms, wrists and fingers that will be necessary to play whatever pattern you dream up.

I heard somewhere the Neil Peart practiced rudiments for 6 hours a day for his first three years of drumming. If you see the video of him playing "Fly by Night", he is (I believe) 19 and that would imply that he had been playing only 5 years.

  • ahhh great cover maatey - i started the drums when i was 10 anywayz yeh ur such a good drummer for a 10 yr old :) c ya lata bi

  • I really want to learn this song. Where did you find the drum music for Jump?

  • This is not the original arrangement by Van Halen, and it hasn't been transcribed (it is difficult to transcribe faithfully, due to the Keith Moon style of playing ahead-of and behind the beat).

There is drum tab on the net for the original version; just google "drum tab van halen jump". Not sure how good it is though...

  • DUDE!, im your newest, biggest fan ever!!!, and if anyone wants to disclaim, they are gunna have to go through me first.

  • tyr megadeth.. thier probly too hard for you though

  • IT WAS PRETTY GOOD

    DONT B HATEN

  • Neil has done quite a few Rush tunes. Also, check out "Won't get fooled again", which he just did today...

  • STFU. hes 10 u dumshit. im a drummer and i have trouble with this song go suk a dick.

  • Apparently you also have problems with basic spelling. Good luck in the 2nd grade.

  • hey shithead why dont you go suck a dick, cause thats all you have to do all day. *sticks out tounge with eyes wide*

  • WOW,..this kid has some skillz.. dont listen to these other idiots, i cant believe jump, and go for a soda... like those are some serious rips.... good job buddy, rock on

  • Man, he tanks like a rockstar!!!! ive never seen anyone as good as him and its comming from my heart.ROCK ON DUDE!!!

  • I don't post many comments but I've been watching this kid's videos and he's got some talent. I bet mom and dad had to go through a lot of beating and banging to get to this point but now that Jump, Fly By Night and She's a Beauty are coming out of his room it's not so bad huh? Keep it up, I hope to pay money to see you in concert some day.

  • Great job kid! You put a smile on my face. When you meet people like danalynn5150 in your life, keep playing..fck em'.

  • Please take your second-rate Simon Cowell act somewhere else.

Great job, Neil. You definitely have the talent.

  • hes 10 years old shut the fuck up hoebag

  • shut the fuck up bout my mom shes dead asshole

  • the kid is ten hes better then u r. buddy rich is good but hes older. this kid may be the next buddy rich.

  • Hey danalynn, why dont you, huh? plus hes better than you ever will be.

  • are you 46?? you kiddin me? fuckin retard!! get a life and move out of your moms basement, get a wife, drink beer, stop eating cheeseburgers you fat cunt and act like your 46. i figured it would be teenagers rippin on people on youtube

  • I have removed danalynn5150's reply to this comment, and blocked him from any further postings (I think everyone is clear on danalynn5150's opinion).

I am definitely anti-censorship, but I draw the line at baseless accusations that another commenter is a pedophile.

  • He did a damn better job than you ever will, so then why do you hate on other people? your telling him not to do drugs when you do because all you do is come on here and post nasty comments, that is all you will ever be and all you do so, buzz off!

  • everything on here that is mean i give to Danalynn.

  • hey neil if you can read this.......NICE JOB!YOU GOT A TALENT!A NEW DRUMMER IS BORN!YOU HAVE A GIFT!

  • lol i mean MORE amazing (:

  • wow your amazing keep playing and you will be amazing hope you dont end up being like Ringo XD lol

  • looks like a trained dog. thats the 800th time hes played that song in the past 10 days. but it was good. KEEP IT UP!

  • At the time this video was recorded, Neil hadn't played this song in a couple of months, and this was the only take (he's never played it since either). Pretty much all the videos are one take, the only exception being "The Spirit of Radio".

Make a request, if he likes the song, and it's a similar difficulty to jump (i.e. no Dennis Chambers/Buddy Rich/Carl Palmer/Gene Krupa drum solo's :-) then he'll post it the following day (just provide a youtube link to the song).

  • As I travel through this journey called life.....I sometimes see certain people who have the power of Van Halen coursing in their veins....they have it in their DNA....this kid is one of them.....he has "The Gift".

  • now all he needs is the Alex VH trademark neck brace and he's all set!

  • geez, that's awesome... I wish I could play like that. =3
