I think that folks who complain about hound training are sometimes people who don't understand the mind of the hound. I don't claim to be any sort of expert myself, I can only give my own observations. Our Blue is happiest when he is running and digging in the woods. He comes home exhausted, filthy, hungry, and covered in cactus thorns - but he's about as happy as a dog can be and ready to do it all again. These dogs LOVE to hunt.
I should point out here that there was not anything in the tree, in spite of all of the barking. We have hunted him, but not regularly, because he ends up on the same tree every time. His most recent activity is swimming out to bay a willow tree in the tank (new videos up). He does have just over thirty acres that he can roam, and has become very protective of our herd of goats.
Oh ok, he was probably somebody's coon dog that had gotten away from them. You should look into taking him coon hunting. That is what he is doing on that tree, is treeing coon.
Yep, we spent quite some time trying to figure out where he came from. That was about four years ago, and nobody that we knew in three counties with hounds or hog dogs had any idea. We did hear that he had been seen ten miles from where we picked him up, but he wasn't much more than hide and bone when we did find him.
Oh my goodness! No, we couldn't sell Blue. We've had him since we found him half-starved on the side of the highway at about one year old. I'd consider breeding him though, we are in South Texas.
I would bet that he is treeing on a coon. maybe that tree in particular is a nest.
