@RHODESIA111 What a question! Really enjoyed listening to this song again! Reminded me of Eskimo Hut, Haddon & Sly, Meikles etc! Take care and God bless.
@rhodie007 - you must have lived in Salisbury then? Our family lived in Umtali - moved to the U.K.Dec 78. On leaving, we stopped half way up Christmas Pass to take a final look back - only time I ever recall seeing my late mother cry. Having been back in this cesspit of a country since- I consider it my good fortune on an almost daily basis to have lived there. Hoping to retire to Spain - lovely little town called Jalon (Alicante) basically, Umtali in Spain ! - keep well & take care
amazing this was one of the things we brought to Australia when we left South Africa in the late 60's . My Dad and I use to sing it all the time rofl.omg memory lane time
Dankie doll/ou :-) I found the cd online many years ago. My yankee friends think it is baie funny! Have a hard time explaining nigger balls though haha
It's come back to me that my Dad's ship was the SA Oranje. He was chief radio officer - WCH Eckersley. I have some stuff of his somewhere to do with the ship, but I know his ship was the SA Oranje, because I called it the SA Orange.
I heard this once on the radio in London sometime in the early 60s and missed what the song was and who sung it, but the misheard verses and chorus have been in my head ever since. Thanks for posting this after I finally found the song, I always thought it was a South African singer, not someone who worked with Spike Milligan, who was a genius.
My Dad was in the Merchant Navy on the Union Castle Line (destination Cape Town) and he brought this record home when I was 4 or 5 (from Cape Town I expect) and I used to play it on our radigram also. It brings back great memories, though I hadn't the foggiest what it was about, only that it was funny and made me laugh. I still have it up in the attic, but it's on a different record label - Gallatone or something?
@hauntboy - Union Castle - that was the line that Mom and I (Dad having flown out in Jan 56) went to join Dad in the then Southern Rhodesia. We sailed on the Rhodesia Castle from Southampton arriving in Cape Town in the May and then by train to Salisbury in April 56 - Mom, 22 - and I,11 months old.
@RHODESIA111 My Dad would very probably have been on that ship, as he sailed from Southampton. He used to go away and then come back 6 weeks or so later and stop for about 10 days then off again. I'm not sure how often the ships sailed, but if his was the only ship that went that way, you Mom would have met him.
@hauntboy - small world isn't it !! as a family we ended up in Umtali (Rhodesia) which we left in Dec 78 when the writing was on wall. I believe there where numerous ships in the Castle line - Union, Rhodesia, Kenya, Bloonfontein and Pretoria. Goodness, what a way to travel to a hard but rewarding future, be it that it ended up with a monster !!
@RHODESIA111 Just found this online: The SA Oranje was originally built for the Union Castle Line as the mailship Pretoria Castle. Launched on the 19th of August 1947 by Mrs Issie Smuts, wife of the then Prime Minister Jan Smuts, this 28 705 ton steamer was 227,8 metres in length with a capacity of just under 900 first and tourist class passengers. >>>
@hauntboy (continued) <<< In 1966 she was sold to Safmarine and in 1969 transferred to the South African registery. Renamed SA Oranje, she served with Safmarine until 1975 when she was sent for breaking up in Taiwan.
Thanks for posting this, but please won't you play the flip side which is "Jo'burg Talking Blues"?

@hauntboy Jeremy Taylor was a teacher in Joburg and he was interested in the Sarfeffrican accent. So he made this record and the rest is history.
