  • Dude, this videos rocks... when you get the time, do the entire song. Very good job!

  • did shatner releases an lp with that song? does anybody knows? is it a cover song? who does the "secondary" vocals? can please anyone tell me?

  • Oh, yeah- and arranged by Ben Folds... Joe J is A Great one but even he needs Another Great One. There's a whole second half plus to this song. The good part. Find another upload not done for freshman media classes and hear Shatner roar! I'd have used Denny Crain to much greater effect as Daddy, The Cap'n is almost 50 years ago and has no class role in 21st century society.

  • joe jackson sounds as good as he did in the 80s

  • Song cuts out early : (

  • Pretty nice song. What is the band?

  • oof the chorus THUMBS DOWN

  • YES

  • FUCK! The Big Giant Head fuckin' rocks! :D :D

  • DEADLY!!!XXX

  • rum and coka cola you rule shat

  • 1:33 haha this kid looks like me=) me but 20 years ago =(

  • no. it's genius.

  • is this a joke?

  • @glosoly everything is a joke with a bit of true =)

  • i seriously think i've blown my funny fuse! my favorite song and one of THE best people living, sorry i seriously think Shatner is a LEGEND. ''Are you SURE, you wanna live like common people?''

Truly if im ever down this will forever bring me right back up thanks for posting

  • Oh, for fuck sake.

  • Who's the girl at 0:04?

  • shatner is a legend, terrible actoe, terrible musician but hardcore fella

    we love ya bill

  • joe jackson brings the edge that the original song lacked

  • I love ya Bill.

  • better than the original,u gotta watch Shatner singin it was a very good year, its one of his first covers

  • This has got to be the the worst thing I have ever heard

  • I actually prefer this over Pulp's original. Long live Shanter!

  • @GroovyTeacosy

Yes long live Shanter, Shanter is amazing and Shanter is all of our heroes. SHANTER!

  • that wasn't all of the fr***ken song!!!!! :<

  • Smoke some fags and play some pool. That seems like my life summed up at the mo. Pulp are good aint they?

  • Love the Joe Jackson part (01:26).

  • Shatner. He ranks right up there with Puff Daddy for hilariously bad mockeries of other peoples work.

  • This might be the single greatest song composition in modern time. Shatner is a genius and Joe Jackson brings it home....this is BEYOND anything you will ever hear LOL

  • loved the video, someones gone to a bit of effort. Nice work mate.

  • Truly terrible..

  • The original was in my head this morning. I heart Pulp.

  • The originial version was in my head this morning, but I love the Shatner version, too.

  • Oh Yeah, F*** F*** yeah yeah. william is GOD. Wow William Shatner is GOD.

  • He found a way....

  • First there was the original gem by Jarvis & Co.

    Seemingly untouchable.

Until Wil & Joe reinvented the cover-principle with tongue in cheek brilliance.

And now we have davidqpr, serving the perfect low-key video to perfection the triumvirate. The screw bit is a simple 10/10. Thanks for this.

  • PMSL. WTF?!

  • hahaha! this is great!

  • don't forget joe jackson's contribution..... !

  • Pulp sucks dick, Shat FTW

  • Shatner for the win!

  • Brill

  • I love this video. I wish you had made it for the whole song though.

  • I like Shatner's version a lot more than Pulp's

  • NickP238 William Shatner is Canadian. I recon his version is much better than pulps.

  • he is the one! Es kann nur einen geben!

  • szaam is right, it is so utterly english that though shatner tries really hard to make it work, the fact that he is american will always ruin it. pulp's version is so much better

  • I agree that pulp's version is a whole lot better, but his is meant as a joke. But hey, we have common people too!

  • Shatner dedication in great new bio (All About Jeffrey Hunter) at amazon!

  • Rightg on exc123. Shatner's version, indeed this video, is better than the original.

  • Awesome

  • great song, great version, great video

  • shatner is the king.

  • WOW, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually think Shatner improved the song!!!!!!!

  • I cover this version on acoustic all the time, people love it, it's amazing how they tune in.

  • this is a thoroughly english song that americans couldn't possibly pull off.

  • Lol! Brits have no sense of irony!!!!

  • Great way to ruin a classic.

  • love shatner. love jackson.

  • Nice vid for a great cover.

  • i wish there was a video

  • @CHEFBOYRD6942 There is a video of this you can find it on Daily Motion ...the whole thing is there it's great

  • i'm in love with this

  • lmao.

  • But the song is awesome

  • this is entertainment, but how the fuck did he get round to doing this

  • in 1968, shatner did an album like this, only that time it was a serious undertaking for him.. that album was released on cd in the 90's and became a cult hit. this time round it is more tongue-in-cheek, but obviously an attempt to capitalize on the success of that 90's re-issue.. on another note, joe jackson has never sounded better.. i hope there is a version of this singing the entire song without shatner

  • I disagree. Even though there might be some tongue-in-cheek to it, it still comes across as a poignant song with some serious themes addressed. I commend Shatner for being involved and thinks it sounds great the way it is (though you're right, Joe Jackson's singing on this is even better than the original version of the song).

  • F****ing awesome.

  • beats rocket man hands down

  • that's why he's not in the new star trek he's got a singing career, good on him

    i salute u captain

  • HAHAHA! this is brilliant

  • Beats the original by far.

  • this was supposed to be a joke right?

  • featured Joe Jackson, produced by Ben Folds

  • When William Shatner covers a song he makes it his own.

  • Terrible comment but made me chuckle so had to give you a thumbs up!!!haha

  • @fjcalabrese Yeah, his own piece of garbage.

  • Shatner is as big a gift to music as has been to acting.

I have "The Transformed Man" (I highly recommend it) and I've ordered "Has Been" (That THIS came from). I cant wait to get it.

He really IS one of a kind.

  • Agreed

  • It is meant to be a spoof

  • Trekies

  • I can not listen to this song enough.. Shatner Rocks!

  • i think shatner was at his best during his brief stint with Pink Floyd

  • Shatner rules. He's the first to take the piss out of himself.

  • This guy rocks my world.

I'm old enough to remember both versions, and none of them sucks.

  • Listen to the full version (none of your 2.33 nonsense with no choir) on good earphones, then come back and tell me I'm right that it's true genius.

  • i'll go listen to it right now, let's see if i come back, lols

  • I... wanna sleep... WITH... common people... common people, LIKE... you.

  • This is funny, because William Shatner has to be a millionaire.

  • Pulp version is 100 times better than this one, good try though mr. shatner.

  • This version is hilarious but if you think that this version beats Pulp's then I'd suggest listening to Pulp's version again.

  • best song ever!!!! whos calling christian!!!

  • This is just top banana! I've been looking for this song, (William's vers.) for ages and now I have in my faves box. Pulp's ORIGINAL was great but this gives it a refreshing twist of ironic lemon. Now let's get Brian Blessed doing the Damned's "Smash It Up"... Now that I'd pay to see. Cheers!

  • Spoken word is an art- and doing it well is very different and arguably much much harder than singing.

  • Brilliant!

  • Doesn't sing, but talk, ben out of ben foldfive sings

  • Comment removed

  • Ben Folds of....Ben Folds... Ben Folds Five has been broken up for a while.

  • I'm sorry to the Pulp fanboys and purists, but this version blows the original away. The way Shatner gets so passionately into it makes it a real tune and not just a novelty. And if that wasn't enough, Joe Jackson's chorus blows away Jarvis Cocker's vocals.

This version is hilarious, emotive, and awesome. It makes the original, which is good in its own right, seem sterile.

The haters are stuck on the fact that it's Shatner spoken word and "Rocket Man" is now just a punchline. This is great.

  • this is such a wierd song but its pretty good

  • awsome song XD william shatners version is awsome, who did the original?

  • Pulp

  • was theirs not a cover aswell, this one seems abit older O.o or did they do two versions ¬.¬

or does this one only seem old because of the pictures.... hmmm

a mystery to us all.... Never to be uncoverd... till someone reads this and calls me a retarded irish twat, and then id be abit scared because they knew i was irish....

  • jarvis cocker wrote it.

and shatner has a reputation for doing REALLY bad cover songs.

  • bad? this is an awsome version?

    its better than pulps tbh

  • fucking genius

  • n1 best off

  • Joe Jackson does the choruses. His biggest hit was "Steppin' Out" in the 80's. Great singer/songwriter.

  • who is that master Shatner is singing with?

  • ok I like the real "Common People" from Pulp, it's a great song, but Shatner's version....I dont know...he is horrible singing, or should I say, saying it, but I kinda like the music...the original is soooo much better though...just kinda odd hearing "Kirk" doing this.

  • ok i just had to post this...check out the pic of Shatner at 1:20 when he says, "you wanna sleep with common people, like me"?? OMG he looks so clueless!!! Shatner's low-key vocals are funny as hell...although I don't know if that's what he was going for when he recorded it. LOL

  • Why do you do this to yourself?

  • The album was produced and arranged by Ben Folds and most of the songs are co-written by Folds and Shatner, with Folds creating arrangements for Shatner's prose-poems, and feature guest appearances from Joe Jackson (on a cover of Pulp's "Common People"),

  • good job

  • no its joe jackson!

  • how is this better than pulp

its just him randomly saying the lyrics

    it has no proper rythme

  • this is shit.

  • Sorry but i prefer pulps version!!! it does it for me lol

  • fucking legend

  • the shatner is a legend, but who is the other guy singing? hes amazing.

  • The other guy is Joe Jackson.

  • its bens fold

  • Hey! Lighten up you guys. This is meant to be funny. I think Jarvis would laugh his socks off!

  • it would be alright-but the non shatner singing is terrible.

  • I love everything about Shatner, he is so hilarious! On top of that, he's a good person. A kind person, also nice to everybody.

  • best version in my opinion

  • the actual singing is joe jackson. and this song is amazing

  • This is an absolute abomination. Jarvis Cocker would be turning in his grave (if he were dead). As it is, he probably just wants to stab Shatner in the face for ruining his fantastic nineties classic. His ridiculous voice probably works for Star Trek, but not for Pulp songs. Jog on Shatner, you're awful.

  • Its better than orginally.Vitun hieno!

  • BWhahahahahah

    funny

  • The way he sings is very talky and I LOVE it.

  • The way he sings is very talky and i dont like it. (imo)

  • Simply awesome

  • this version is SOOO much better than Pulp

  • Hey thanks!

  • this is TERIABLE.

    im sorry, but

william shatner is NOT jarvis cocker.

    actually - im not sorry.

  • not a problem-you really have to love the Shat to appreciate it-but im a pulp fan too ironically!!

  • ooh dear

  • Jesus Christ...

  • hello this videos is wonferful, i have a cuestion wich the rock band that play this song, ok shtaner sign but whom is the other voice and music? plis i thank you if you could tell me that

"O'Hura, why don't you come up to my quarters and have a look at the Captain's Log"

...and bring that crazy-looking blue chick with you.

  • agree-much underated.Glad you liked the vid-six weeks not wasted then!!

  • Yep. 'Ol Bill with Ben Folds and Joe Jackson on vocals. I like both versions of this song

  • Not kidding I did send it to the shat man.

He has his own youtube channel.

  • Great song..how true are the words. 5stars, fav and shared

  • Thanks for sharing this bethsheba. Shatner is a Canadian son. Quirky little guy was so self-important when he was young I loathed him. Now he is SO self-depreciating and humble I love him to bits! A great humanitarian.

  • thankyou.

  • Jwatcher don't be such a DICK,IM British

and BILLS version IS just as good as Pulp's.

  • just completly bill's version -thats all
