  • I agree 37W is a big power draw for a home server. My atom box (Dell thin client with 2 x external 1TB USB HDDs) idles at 11W. That's running Scientific Linux though, so no ZFS.

  • With green energy and an enlightened attitude, humanity can really live an easy and comfortable life. Courage and intelligence will let us evolve into something greater. You would enjoy the story of WITH THESE EYES.

  • Thanx for this video, and showing the power consumption, pretty close to what i expect. Before I got my current system I was thinking of a Atom based board, but today my server is running to much for that small motherboard. The system is a AMD Athlon II x4 with 4GB ram, with 2 storage drives(third on its way) and dual network cards and a 2.5" harddrive for the os. It uses about 53w with a virtual machine running a webserver, and only the 2.5" spinning.

  • Do you have problem with the WDEARS 1TB drive? This drive uses the new advanced format 4k.

  • Could you have installed FreeNAS to one of the hard drives instead of the USB flash drive?

  • I'm pleasantly surprised to report that I'd purchased a very cheep motherboard replacement called ASRock PV530 ($45) with a VIA chip set (Not Intel Atom ). This board is very energy efficient and very fast. Like the D945GCLF, It has 2 onboard SATA ports and 1 PCI slot for a I/O controller card.

  • D945GCLF, the single core Atom motherboard works without any issues... however D945GCLF2 (dual core) is not exactly compatible with freenas version 7.nnn . For some reason the system to crashes periodically when under heavy disk usage. This issue may have been corrected in version 8.

  • That device you have plugged into the wall that is showing you the energy consumption - could you please tell me where I might buy one online? (I do NOT live in the US.)

  • I purchased it at Canadian Tire.

  • @vpulpv Perhaps I should have added that I do not live in Canada either. But thanks for the info, I'm STILL looking for one.

  • I'm using a 200Mhz Pentium r.

My video streaming stutters like f*&^, I think the term "any old hardware" I took a bit too far :)

  • @Agerasia yay i has 600mhz slot1 p3 =D

  • 37 watt is a lot.

    I'm at 15.

  • @lesleyhenriquez oh yeah? I just made my first home server from old parts and it is running at 120W at idle...lol...obviously I plan to change it but until then I think it will suffice

  • How did you accomplish 15watts? you should make your own video ... i'm serious.

  • @vpulpv Slowest Core i3-530, use one memorybank, any unused stuff in bios needs to be turned off, leave out optical drive(use slimline optical when really necessary). Also pick a motherboard that idles really low to begin with, usually the lowest end chipset. Then downclock it a bit(in my case 2,2 Ghz max clock was the sweet spot).

To go extra low you need to read the motherboard and take out unused powerconverters(biggest drain on power). I had that done by someone else. YMMV.

  • @vpulpv get rid of the 20GB drives, for starters...

  • lol... why did you use the same case/power supply? you could have just kept your old system, and got a new case...

  • mobo is tiny in dat case

  • CABLE MANAGEMENT is key for this setup. Less cable clutter means BETTER airflow. Clean it up and make a vid about the temp differences.

  • how many volts is your power? 110 or 220V?

  • The big Oil corporations are trying their best to stop free energy ideas from spreading to common ppl.

  • This isn't fast enough to get some serious read speeds.

  • Get a better power supply and you will use even less power.

  • Thanks for your comments! I've mainly use this Atom File server for streaming media content ...some of which is HD. I've been using this for months on end now and have had no issues or lag.

Since a file server is designed to be accessed over the network I am not concerned about read write speeds as the bottle neck is the network ... in my case its 100MBits/s. The Atom CPU & Hard Drive is well capable of out performing that even at 1000Mbits/s (fastest networks)

  • how are your read write speeds?

  • Thats really awesome

I'm thinking of building one out of an old compaq :D

  • awesome
