I don't know if the real woman this movie was based on was exactly the way she's depicted in this movie. But the girl in this movie won't have her leg amputated because she thinks it would be unfair for her daughter to have a one-legged mother. So she takes chemo and drugs to stop the cancer which makes her irritable and sick. Then she decides it's unfair for her daughter to have a mother who's irritable and sick. So she goes off everything and dies and her child ends up with no mother at all.
she probably could have lived is she had the operation and her daughter would have had her mother...I look at this movie so differently now as a grown woman and mother...than I did when I was a kid
@justsailingalong - it also bothered me that she was so against amputation when it offered the best chance of survival. I'm not sure what the real Jacquelyn Helton felt about that so I'm wondering if the refusal to amputate was fictionalized, or if there were potential really bad side effects to amputation not explored in the movie. Also, the world in the 1970s wasn't as understanding or kind about people with disabilities as they are now.
The female star of this film is absolutely gorgeous

@cynthiacher Actually, Mrs. Helton, the inspiration for this movie, did deny amputation.

I never understood why she didn't have her leg amputated. She couldn't walk on it anyway, and it might have saved her life.

@justsailingalong That is a very good point. Most folks would do anything to stay around for their kids.

I love the way he sings "Lady." I hate to say this, but I like Cliff''s version more than John's..

Brenda Vaccaro, is playing the pediatric oncologist, WOW! Not too many women were physicians back in the 70s; let alone a specialist.
