I just learned to know 16 Horsepower a few weeks ago. It's actually a little sad, minor music. This makes it misterious for me. I really like it. Great great..
tout bon ...long live this song... may we never foget those who fight for our "freedom"....may we never had to do that sacrifice again....respect and admiration
@trurlesklapanciusz blahblahblah ... killer ... blahblahblah ...
@justforfun73 I just did a search. You know there is actually some info on the web suggesting that it was Nick Cave.
Anyway, I am sure you are right though.
My apologies. Apparently 16 horsepower and Nick Caves and the Bad Seeds did have the same management for a while and did tour together and you have to admit, he sounds like Nick Cave.
I don't think "jazz" and "dirge" go together, that's all. The musicians have "artistic license", and this site welcomes comments. They have a right to do the piece this way, and post it, and I have a right to comment. For this I'm an "asshole"?
Doesn't matter what came first, i like both versions. The solemness of Mr Cohen and the more haunted feel of 16 Horsepower/Cantat . That's the only thing anybody can do with a cover: make it your own. So no point in debating about it. Music is here to enjoy!
@bart252 I can settle this matter. The original song was written by French writers Anna Marly and Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie in 1943. It's only in the late 60s that Cohen translated it into English.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This sucked! It was horrible. I barely recognized the piece. No one can top the great Leonard Cohen.you can't improve upon perfection. This reminds me of the mauling of "Good king Wenceslas" by Mannheim Steamroller! A classic should be left alone, especially if its already perfect.
Wish we could separate the sentimentality from the reality. That's impossible even if one witnessed events. We each see through eyes influenced by so many different things. Thanks for the comment, Kjoslaw. Very sad. The song in itself is incredibly moving and touches hearts. It makes us want to know more.
@jstoneking Actually, Cohen wasn't born when the song was written in 1943 by French resistance heroes Anna Marly and Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie. Google it.
After the War french résistance members were heros in France... Polish Home Army members were hounded by puppet polish government, tortured, murdered...Pilecki (is claimed to be the bravest person of WWII), Okulicki, Fieldorf, Kuraś, Siedzikówna, "Łupaszka"- that's only some of names of the best sons of Poland murdered in the name of comunist law...for 45 years propaganda called them traitors, colaborants, scums...now we know the truth...can one compare how those two armies were rewarded?
