  • I just learned to know 16 Horsepower a few weeks ago. It's actually a little sad, minor music. This makes it misterious for me. I really like it. Great great..

  • tout bon ...long live this song... may we never foget those who fight for our "freedom"....may we never had to do that sacrifice again....respect and admiration

  • another killer on youtube

  • @trurlesklapanciusz blahblahblah ... killer ... blahblahblah ...

  • It's Nick Cave singing the English parts in case anyone is curious about it, He is a huge Leonard Cohen fan,

  • @dougzilla

No! It's David Eugene Edwards from 16 Horsepower.

  • @justforfun73 I just did a search. You know there is actually some info on the web suggesting that it was Nick Cave.

Anyway, I am sure you are right though.

My apologies. Apparently 16 horsepower and Nick Caves and the Bad Seeds did have the same management for a while and did tour together and you have to admit, he sounds like Nick Cave.

I am also a Einstürzende Neubauten fan.

  • OH MY.HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL.

  • revient!

  • One of my favourite song of all times. Gives me shivers averytime. Period.

  • Masterpiece

  • Stunning cover version.

  • I don't think "jazz" and "dirge" go together, that's all. The musicians have "artistic license", and this site welcomes comments. They have a right to do the piece this way, and post it, and I have a right to comment. For this I'm an "asshole"?

  • great

  • Doesn't matter what came first, i like both versions. The solemness of Mr Cohen and the more haunted feel of 16 Horsepower/Cantat . That's the only thing anybody can do with a cover: make it your own. So no point in debating about it. Music is here to enjoy!

  • @bart252 I can settle this matter. The original song was written by French writers Anna Marly and Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie in 1943. It's only in the late 60s that Cohen translated it into English.

  • great cover!!!

  • @trampsmom14 fuck off. if nobody was allowed to reinterpret songs, then jazz wouldn't exist. de gustibus non est disputandum, asshole.

  • Wish we could separate the sentimentality from the reality. That's impossible even if one witnessed events. We each see through eyes influenced by so many different things. Thanks for the comment, Kjoslaw. Very sad. The song in itself is incredibly moving and touches hearts. It makes us want to know more.

  • ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is so amazing...Thank you!!!!!

  • Actually, Cohen did the original when Noir Desir were children.

  • @jstoneking : he did a cover only => the original was written by Marly/d'Astier during the WW2

  • @jstoneking

He did an earlier version yes, but remember the song was penned during WW2 not after.

  • @jstoneking Actually, Cohen wasn't born when the song was written in 1943 by French resistance heroes Anna Marly and Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie. Google it.

  • @Rachegotter Leonard Cohen was born in 1934

  • @BirsaGomorraBeach So, as I meant, he wasn't born into music in 1943 yet, when that song was written, not by him.

  • Oh, how i love this song!

  • oh just...yeah!

  • I was cautioned to surrender,

    this I could not do...

  • J'ai changé cent fois de nom

    j'ai perdu femme et enfants

    mais j'ai tant d'amis...

  • amazing song... i love it!

  • underbar....

  • wow

  • @DemocracyForEveryone long way

  • Wich date for this release?

  • Genial

  • Great version of a song that touches me deeply every time I listen to it.

  • Who actually sang this version together? I still don't know

  • @sirkka67 16 Horsepower with Noir Desir frontman Bertrand Cantat .

  • Freedom soon will come...

  • peace to all humans!!!

  • For all My Vet Brothers and Sisters.

  • fantastic just wow... mindblowing

  • Anyone know where I can get this recording or any David Eugene Edwards cover of "The Partisan"?

  • marci anna marly

  • After the War french résistance members were heros in France... Polish Home Army members were hounded by puppet polish government, tortured, murdered...Pilecki (is claimed to be the bravest person of WWII), Okulicki, Fieldorf, Kuraś, Siedzikówna, "Łupaszka"- that's only some of names of the best sons of Poland murdered in the name of comunist law...for 45 years propaganda called them traitors, colaborants, scums...now we know the truth...can one compare how those two armies were rewarded?

  • What a surprise find. A long time favourite artist covered by a new favourite band. Very nice version, made me look at the song differently.

  • Its not a Cohen song

The original song was wroten during the secong world war in england in 1943 by Anna Marly for the music and Emmanuel d'Astier de La Vigerie called "Bernard"in the secret army, for the lyrics

Cohen knew this song from scouts camps when he was young and just took the music and change the lyrics.

He sings the two versions french and english as here but his adaptation is really beter than these of noir desir

  • @fav1579

  • Oh the great lord Cohen and his best mates, Buckley and now Noir Desir! Fine stuff! :)

    nah, ten times better.

  • @dannyman6969

  • @dannyman6969

    on youtube :

"La Complainte du Partisans" by Anna Marly FRENCH RESISTANCE Music Video Montage

  • this cover of the partisan is simply amazing...

  • @Jaquoutopie This isn't a cover. Leonard Cohen wrote this version and is singing in it. Its just way better with Noir Desir, because they can sing, whereas Leonard Cohen is better suited for writing.

  • @philipemessina no, the lyrics are by ann marly, english translation by hy zaret, music written by leonard cohen but this is performed by sixteen horsepower with bertrand cantat (who was in noir desir) doing some of the vocals.

  • Wow. Never heard this cover before. Incredible.

  • and anyway, i found out yesterday he isnt as good at oral as he is at flute playing, Believe that!

  • his flute player is in the latest concert 2009 not this vid, how did we got onto that subject?

  • dude, i wonder if hes as good at oral as he is at working that nifty looking flute

  • OMG! like how cld u say that the guy on the flute isnt gay!!!

    his bf is tho :D

  • this dude is so good, he reminds me of slipknot.

they sing exactly the same, and his lead guitarist is way better then sinister gates!

and im lovin the gay on the flute >> other vid

  • Im such a big fan of Leonard cohen, he has a rice shaker! :D

  • wonderful

  • As a huge Cohen fan, I have to say they have put a nice new flavor on this song. Wonderful.

  • what can i say?noir desir is everywhere!

  • AAAAh Bertrand, magnifique!!!!!!!!!!

  • nice i like it

  • This is 16 Horsepower's "Partisan". Where's Noir Desir, except on the picture?

  • 2:01 Cantat starts singing

    Great song Anyway!

  • i'd just like to point out that Leonard's version is ALSO a cover, it's not the original...

  • David & Leonard in unison, what a combo my hat off to you both, well done !!!

  • DAVID & LEONARD

  • Sooooo cooool! cool cool cool!!!!!

  • i beg to differ, yes i tend to disagree, this is not total crap.

  • Sixteen Horsepower is so good i love the band

  • Yes, Bertrand sings on two songs on Low estate (2d edition only). The other one is Fire Spirit, a Gun Club song cover!

  • It's Sixteen Horsepower with Bertrand Cantat in Sixteen Horsepower's 'Low Estate' album

(European version that includes a couple more tracks than the one that went out in the States)

  • I LOVE IT...Sto afierono katerina..einai to tragoudi tou xorismou mas

  • this song is so good.

its on my playlist 3 times

  • It's on low estate. It's bertrand cantat and horsepower. I don't think its all of noir desir.

  • yes yes Bertrand is singing..:)) what a great interpretation..!

  • get it ed!

  • isn't this 16 horsepower with leonard cohen? not with noir desir?

  • No no it is Noir Désir with 16 horsepower. I recognize Bertrand Cantat's voice very well.

  • Llaftari...

  • This version is very beautiful

  • A true legend! The duet is great. Great song!

    Freedom for the whole world!!!

  • Wow. If that doesn't send tingles down your spine, then you have a heart of stone. Two of my favourite singers, Bertrand Cantat and DEE from 16 HP. I never knew that they had collaborated (apologies for the choice of word given the text). That's made my day.

Thanks for putting this on youtube

  • there's another song of those two ; Fire Spirit.

  • De la vraie musique...

  • Some songs have soul

  • You 're right it is not Leonard who's singing with Bertrant, but it's Leonard who revealed this old song written by Emmanuel d'Astier de La Vigerie and Anna Marly during WWII

  • a wonderful song ..

  • It´s not Leonard Cohen singing here... It´s Noir Desir & 16. Horsepower!

  • thanks for posting this music =)
