John Cheese more like..Sainsbury's are not as ethical as they claim and their food quality is below par, and they have been prosecuted at many stores for poor hygeine. I myself reported one of their stores to enviromental health back in 2007 and that store was prosecuted and heavily fined.
You should all be so lucky - at least you didn't have a made-up boy band advertising produce like Shaw's Supermarket(owned by Sainsbury's at the time) in the US did.
Why do people always have to give a big explanation to why the advert was crap? Like i work for tescos but you dont see me, giving a big long speech and saying about managers or shit why the advert is crap. Its an advert its either shit or its either good. We dont need or want big explanations nobody cares if you work there. ITS A FUCKING ADVERT!!
Yes, an extremely poor advert. We have come a long way since then. John Cleese is not to blame - he was given a script and told to get on with it. The MD's, David Sainsbury, Dino Adriano and Peter Davis (1990's) had a laid back approach to marketing. Lower end supermarkets - Tesco and Asda started to build out-of- town superstores which sold everything. Sainsbury's stayed in town and did not more on. Now They have come out of it they are doing very well in the ethics stakes! Its about quality.
That's claptrap cooked up by the big wigs at the company who can't take their own responsibility for bad business decisions. Sales at Sainsbury's had been shrinking for years long before the Cleese commercials. They had already been kicked out of the #1 spot by Tesco and today are now #3.
You can have the best adverts in the world (like these) but all they will do is get the punters into the store. However, when the punters see the same items for sale they see at Tesco for 10% less they are not going to come back.
Shame they didn't have a Christmas episode of Fawlty Towers.

yes, true, but the Cleese adverts did nothing to help sales whatsoever.
Sainsbury's got stuck in a rut, much like M&S did... now they are slowly coming out of it.
